Decision trees and labeling of low noise pavements as support for noise action plans.

Low noise pavements (LNPs) are a market driven trend to mitigate the high road traffic noise exposure levels. Their improvement towards acoustic efficiency and durability over time is a challenge since these factors can conflict with road primary functions, such as safety. LNPs are not always the most cost-effective solution in health effects prevention. Whilst Green Public Procurement (GPP) highlighted the importance of reducing rolling noise emissions by introducing new regulations for new-layed LNPs, the fixed minimum requirements are not exhaustive. Generally, limits are set following the

On prediction of aided behavioural measures using speech auditory brainstem responses and decision trees.

Current clinical strategies to assess benefits from hearing aids (HAs) are based on self-reported questionnaires and speech-in-noise (SIN) tests; which require behavioural cooperation. Instead, objective measures based on Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) to speech stimuli would not require the individuals' cooperation. Here, we re-analysed an existing dataset to predict behavioural measures with speech-ABRs using regression trees. Ninety-two HA users completed a self-reported questionnaire (SSQ-Speech) and performed two aided SIN tests: sentences in noise (BKB-SIN) and vowel-consonant-vowel

Prediction of military combat clothing size using decision trees and 3D body scan data.

AIM: To determine how well decision tree models can predict tailor-assigned uniform sizes using anthropometry data from the New Zealand Defence Force Anthropometry Survey (NZDFAS). This information may inform automatic sizing systems for military personnel. METHODS: Anthropometric data from two separate samples of the New Zealand Defence Force military were used. Data on Army personnel from the NZDFAS (n = 583) were used to develop a series of shirt- and trouser-size prediction models based on decision trees. Different combinations of physical, automatic, and post-processed measurements (the

Decision trees for combining morphological traits and measurements of the skull for osteological sex estimation.

Forensic anthropologists commonly estimate osteological sex using separate metric and morphological analyses, without integrating both data types into a single statistical model. Combining data types into one classification model has the potential to increase sex classification accuracies for the skull. Therefore, the present study seeks to improve sex classification accuracies for the skull by combining morphological and metric variables using decision trees. The main objectives are to (1) generate multiple decision trees that combine metric and morphological variables, (2) compare the classi

Clinical Decision Support Trees Can Help Optimize Utilization of Anaplasma phagocytophilum Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing.

Anaplasmosis, a tick-borne illness caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum (AP), presents with nonspecific clinical symptoms, including fever and headache, and is often accompanied by laboratory abnormalities of leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and mildly elevated liver function tests (LFTs). Laboratory confirmation of acute infection occurs with nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT). This retrospective cohort study aimed to develop a clinical decision support algorithm to aid in decision-making about test ordering. A data set was constructed with AP NAAT results and time-adjacent complete blood

Evaluation of Accepting Kidneys of Varying Quality for Transplantation or Expedited Placement With Decision Trees.

BACKGROUND: Underutilization of marginal-quality kidneys for transplantation produced ideas of expediting kidney placement for populations with decreased opportunities of receiving transplants. Such policies can be less efficacious for specific individuals and should be scrutinized until the decision-making for accepting marginal-quality organs, which has relied on experiential judgment, is better understood at the individual level. There exist rigorous tools promoting personalized decisions with useful and objective information. METHODS: This article introduces a decision-tree methodology th

Longitudinal risk profiling for suicidal thoughts and behaviours in a community cohort using decision trees.

BACKGROUND: While associations between specific risk factors and subsequent suicidal thoughts or behaviours have been widely examined, there is limited understanding of the interplay between risk factors in the development of suicide risk. This study used a decision tree approach to develop individual models of suicide risk and identify the risk factors for suicidality that are important for different subpopulations. METHODS: In a population cohort of 6656 Australian adults, the study examined whether measures of mental health, physical health, personality, substance use, social support, soci

Unveiling postpartum PTSD: predicting risk factors using decision trees and logistic regression in Chinese women.

BACKGROUND: While traditional logistic regression emphasizes main effects with limited capacity for interaction detection, emerging decision trees excel in uncovering complex associations. However, no studies have yet integrated both approaches to investigate postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD). This study aims to explore the factors associated with postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD) in Chinese women using decision tree and logistic regression models, while also comparing the predictive performance of both approaches. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruite

Screening for transcatheter mitral valve replacement: a decision tree algorithm.

AIMS: The high frequency of screening failure for anatomical reasons in patients with severe mitral valve regurgitation (MR) is a limiting factor in the screening process for transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). However, data on optimal patient selection are scarce. The present study aimed to develop a screening algorithm based on TMVR screening data. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 195 screenings for six different TMVR devices were performed in 94 high-risk patients with severe MR. We compared baseline echocardiographic and multislice computed tomography (MSCT) parameters between t

Using a Decision Tree to Guide Bowel Management in Spina Bifida.

BACKGROUND: When born with spina bifida, there are numerous neurologic disorders that accompany this birth defect, including neurogenic bowel. Proactive, systematic, and rational approaches can lead to continence and a more functional lifestyle [1]. METHODS: Based on the evidence in the literature and expert experience, our approach to bowel management was developed as a step by step, individualized approach. This was converted to a decision tree for easy guidance of treatment decisions. The approach includes teaching patients and families normal bowel function, changes resulting from neuroge

Development of a Decision Tree to Streamline Infrainguinal Vein Graft Surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Duplex ultrasound (DU) remains the gold standard for identification and grading of infrainguinal vein graft stenosis. However, DU-based graft surveillance remains controversial. The aim of this study was to develop a decision tree to identify high-risk grafts which would benefit from DU-based surveillance. METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing infrainguinal vein graft bypass were enrolled in a DU surveillance program. An early postoperative DU was performed at a median of 6 weeks (range 4-9). Based on the findings of this scan and 4 established risk factors for graft failure (d

The value of decision tree analysis in planning anaesthetic care in obstetrics.

The use of decision tree analysis is discussed in the context of the anaesthetic and obstetric management of a young pregnant woman with joint hypermobility syndrome with a history of insensitivity to local anaesthesia and a previous difficult intubation due to a tongue tumour. The multidisciplinary clinical decision process resulted in the woman being delivered without complication by elective caesarean section under general anaesthesia after an awake fibreoptic intubation. The decision process used is reviewed and compared retrospectively to a decision tree analytical approach. The benefits

Development of a decision tree to assess the severity and prognosis of stable COPD.

The aim of this study was to develop and validate a new method: a classification and regression tree (CART) based on easily accessible measures to predict mortality in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This was a prospective study of two independent prospective cohorts: a derivation cohort with 611 recruited patients and a validation cohort with 348 patients, all followed for 5 yrs. CART analysis was used to predict 5-yr mortality risk using the following covariates from the derivation cohort: age, % predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)), dyspnoea,

The xeroderma pigmentosum pathway: decision tree analysis of DNA quality.

The nucleotide excision repair (NER) system is a fundamental cellular stress response that uses only a handful of DNA binding factors, mutated in the cancer-prone syndrome xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), to detect an astounding diversity of bulky base lesions, including those induced by ultraviolet light, electrophilic chemicals, oxygen radicals and further genetic insults. Several of these XP proteins are characterized by a mediocre preference for damaged substrates over the native double helix but, intriguingly, none of them recognizes injured bases with sufficient selectivity to account for the
