Genome-wide association study of delay discounting in Heterogenous Stock rats.

Delay discounting refers to the behavioral tendency to devalue rewards as a function of their delay in receipt. Heightened delay discounting has been associated with substance use disorders, as well as multiple co-occurring psychopathologies. Genetic studies in humans and animal models have established that delay discounting is a heritable trait, but only a few specific genes have been associated with delay discounting. Here, we aimed to identify novel genetic loci associated with delay discounting through a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using Heterogenous Stock rats, a genetically dive

No differences in delay discounting between smokers with and without HIV.

RATIONALE: People with HIV (PWH) smoke cigarettes at much higher rates than the general population and evidence-based cessation methods are less effective, putting PWH at greater risk for negative health outcomes. It is critical to identify the factors that underlie this health disparity. Delay discounting-the decline in the value of a reward when it is delayed-may explain this disparity. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to (1) compare delay discounting between adult smokers with HIV and without HIV and (2) evaluate whether acute smoking abstinence disproportionately increases delay discounting a

Effects of Alcohol Dependence Severity on Neural Correlates of Delay Discounting.

AIMS: The current study examines the relationship between alcohol dependence severity and delay discounting neural activation. METHODS: Participants (N = 17; 6 female) completed measures of alcohol use and severity and a functional magnetic resonance imaging version of a delay discounting task. RESULTS: Alcohol dependence severity was negatively associated with activation in superior frontal gyrus during impulsive relative to delayed decisions, and positively associated with activation in paracingulate gyrus and frontal pole in delayed relative to impulsive decisions. CONCLUSIONS: These res

Gambling, Delay, and Probability Discounting in Adults With and Without ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relationship between impulsivity, as measured by delay and probability discounting, and gambling-related cognitions and behavior in adults with and without ADHD. METHOD: Adults who met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV) diagnostic criteria for ADHD (n = 31) and controls (n = 29) were recruited from the community. All completed an interview that included an assessment of psychiatric disorders, gambling questionnaires, and simulated gambling, delay, and probability discounting tasks. RESULTS: The ADHD group was more likely to

To linearize or not to linearize: That is the Mazur delay discounting question.

We consider the widely used Mazur hyperbolic delay discounting model. Our scientific contributions are twofold. First, we provide a novel linearized version of the Mazur model that leads to an analytic estimator of the delay discount rate. Our novel estimator bypasses an outstanding problem: the instability in the numerical optimization to compute the nonlinear estimator. As a result, a simulation study shows that when compared to the conventional nonlinear estimator, our novel estimator more accurately estimates the discount rate. Second, we propose a linearized Mazur random effects model and

Delay discounting in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Delay discounting refers to the depreciation of the value of a reward as a function of the time it takes to obtain it. Growing evidence shows altered delay discounting in several pathological conditions, including neurological disorders. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the published literature on delay discounting (DD) in Parkinson's Disease (PD). We found steeper DD in patients with PD, compared to healthy controls, both in "on" and "off" dopaminergic medication. These results confirm altered DD in PD and suggest an independent influence of the dopaminergic medicat

Monetary delay discounting in gambling and cocaine dependence with personality comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine addiction and pathological gambling are commonly associated with steeper (impulsive) discounting of delayed rewards, which promotes ongoing drug and gambling behaviors. However, it is yet unclear whether impulsive delay discounting is a stable trait in cocaine and gambling disorders during abstinence, and whether it is significantly impacted by dysfunctional personality beliefs. METHODS: The aim of this study was to compare the delay discounting rates of four groups: 47 cocaine users with comorbid personality disorders, 41 cocaine users without psychiatric comorbidities, 2

Delay discounting and family history of psychopathology in children ages 9-11.

Delay discounting is a tendency to devalue delayed rewards compared to immediate rewards. Evidence suggests that steeper delay discounting is associated with psychiatric disorders across diagnostic categories, but it is unclear whether steeper delay discounting is a risk factor for these disorders. We examined whether children at higher risk for psychiatric disorders, based on family history, would demonstrate steeper delay discounting behavior using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, a nationally representative sample of 11,878 children. We looked at associatio

Relationships among adverse childhood experiences, delay discounting, impulsivity, and diabetes self-management.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to risky health behaviors, as well as the development of chronic health conditions such as both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. A connection between ACEs and diabetes self-management has not yet been established. The current study aims to investigate the relationships among ACEs, delay discounting, impulsivity, and diabetes self-management. METHOD: A total of 227 adults aged 18 to 77 with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and prediabetes were recruited to complete an online survey via Amazon's mechanical Turk. Participants

Living in the Now: Decision-Making and Delay Discounting in Adolescent Gamblers.

Several studies examining the relationship of affective decision-making and delay discounting in disordered gambling demonstrated that adult pathological gamblers differ from healthy controls on both reward-related decision tasks. To date no study analyzed the relative contribution of these variables in adolescent gambling. This study was designed to compare affective decision-making and delay discounting in gamblers and nongamblers Italian adolescents, controlling for alcohol consumption. A total of 138 adolescents took part in the research. Two equal-number groups, defined according to the s

Heroin delay discounting: Modulation by pharmacological state, drug-use impulsivity, and intelligence.

Delay discounting (DD) refers to how rapidly an individual devalues goods based on delays to receipt. DD usually is considered a trait variable but can be state dependent, yet few studies have assessed commodity valuation at short, naturalistically relevant time intervals that might enable state-dependent analysis. This study aimed to determine whether drug-use impulsivity and intelligence influence heroin DD at short (ecologically relevant) delays during two pharmacological states (heroin satiation and withdrawal). Out-of-treatment, intensive heroin users (n = 170; 53.5% African American; 66.

The Sexual Discounting Task: HIV risk behavior and the discounting of delayed sexual rewards in cocaine dependence.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine dependence is associated with high rates of sexual risk behavior and HIV infection. However, little is known about the responsible mechanism(s). METHODS: Cocaine-dependent individuals (N=62) completed a novel Sexual Discounting Task assessing decisions between immediate unprotected sex and delayed sex with a condom across four hypothetical partners: most (and least) likely to have a sexually transmitted infection (STI), and most (and least) sexually desirable; a real rewards money delay-discounting task, and self-reported sexual risk behavior using the HIV Risk-Taking Beha

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder differs from anorexia nervosa in delay discounting.

BACKGROUND: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and anorexia nervosa (AN) are the two primary restrictive eating disorders; however, they are driven by differing motives for inadequate dietary intake. Despite overlap in restrictive eating behaviors and subsequent malnutrition, it remains unknown if ARFID and AN also share commonalities in their cognitive profiles, with cognitive alterations being a key identifier of AN. Discounting the present value of future outcomes with increasing delay to their expected receipt represents a core cognitive process guiding human decision-making

Deconstructing Delay Discounting in Human Cocaine Addiction Using Computational Modeling and Neuroimaging.

BACKGROUND: A preference for sooner-smaller over later-larger rewards, known as delay discounting, is a candidate transdiagnostic marker of waiting impulsivity and a research domain criterion. While abnormal discounting rates have been associated with many psychiatric diagnoses and abnormal brain structure, the underlying neuropsychological processes remain largely unknown. Here, we deconstruct delay discounting into choice and rate processes by testing different computational models and investigate their associations with white matter tracts. METHODS: Patients with cocaine use disorder (CUD)

Delay Discounting as a Transdiagnostic Process in Psychiatric Disorders: A Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Delay discounting is a behavioral economic index of impulsive preferences for smaller-immediate or larger-delayed rewards that is argued to be a transdiagnostic process across health conditions. Studies suggest some psychiatric disorders are associated with differences in discounting compared with controls, but null findings have also been reported. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a meta-analysis of the published literature on delay discounting in people with psychiatric disorders. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched through December

An overview of Bayesian reasoning in the analysis of delay-discounting data.

Statistical inference (including interval estimation and model selection) is increasingly used in the analysis of behavioral data. As with many other fields, statistical approaches for these analyses traditionally use classical (i.e., frequentist) methods. Interpreting classical intervals and p-values correctly can be burdensome and counterintuitive. By contrast, Bayesian methods treat data, parameters, and hypotheses as random quantities and use rules of conditional probability to produce direct probabilistic statements about models and parameters given observed study data. In this work, we r

Wait and you shall see: sexual delay discounting in hypersexual Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease may develop impulse control disorders under dopaminergic treatments. Impulse control disorders include a wide spectrum of behaviours, such as hypersexuality, pathological gambling or compulsive shopping. Yet, the neural systems engaged in specific impulse control disorders remain poorly characterized. Here, using model-based functional MRI, we aimed to determine the brain systems involved during delay-discounting of erotic rewards in hypersexual patients with Parkinson's disease (PD+HS), patients with Parkinson's disease without hypersexuality (PD - HS) and co

Delay discounting and impulsivity traits in young and older gambling disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is understood to be a multidimensional construct involving aspects such as impulsive choice and impulsive traits. Delay discounting, the tendency to place greater value in immediate rewards over larger, long-term rewards, has been associated with maladaptive choices in gambling disorder (GD). Delay discounting is known to evolve with age; though no study to date has evaluated the interactions between impulsivity, GD severity and age in treatment-seeking patients. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine whether associations between delay discounting and impulsivity traits diffe
