Hyperperfusion syndrome of the deltoid muscle after subclavian artery angioplasty and stenting.

PURPOSE: To report a case of hyperperfusion syndrome of the deltoid muscle after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty of a symptomatic high-grade subclavian artery stenosis. CASE REPORT: Immediately after balloon dilation of a left-sided subclavian artery stenosis, a 53-year-old man developed severe ipsilateral shoulder pain and swelling. Computed tomographic angiography revealed no extravasation or hematoma. Sonography showed massive edema and increased anteroposterior diameter of the left deltoid muscle (3.5 cm compared to 2.0 cm on the right). Hyperperfusion syndrome was suspected, and de

Effect of electrical muscle stimulation on the improvement of deltoid muscle atrophy in a rat shoulder immobilization model.

Immobilization following trauma or surgery induces skeletal muscle atrophy, and improvement in the muscle atrophy is critical for successful clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) on muscle atrophy. The study design is a controlled laboratory study. Eighty rats (56 to establish the deltoid muscle atrophy [DMA] model and 24 to evaluate the effect of EMS on the model) were used. DMA was induced by completely immobilizing the right shoulder of each rat by placing sutures between the scapula and humeral shaft, with the left sho

Efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin injection in reducing deltoid muscle hypertrophy.

With the increasing demand for body contouring, botulinum toxin (BTX) injection is being widely used off-label for muscular hypertrophy. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the clinical efficacy of BTX type A (BTX-A) in deltoid muscle hypertrophy. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intramuscular injection of BTX in reducing deltoid muscle hypertrophy. Overall, 10 patients with bilateral deltoid muscle hypertrophy were treated with an intramuscular injection of prabotulinum toxin A, with a total of 50 units [U] administered per patient.

Deltoid muscle contribution to shoulder flexion and abduction strength: an experimental approach.

BACKGROUND: The rotator cuff (RC) and the deltoid muscle are 2 synergistic units that enable the functionally demanding movements of the shoulder. A number of biomechanical studies assume similar force contribution of the force couple (RC and deltoid) over the whole range of motion, whereas others propose position-dependent force distribution. There is a lack of in vivo data regarding the deltoid's contribution to shoulder flexion and abduction strength. This study aimed to create reliable in vivo data quantifying the deltoid's contribution to shoulder flexion and abduction strength throughout

Risperidone long-acting injections: successful alternative deltoid muscle injections for refractory schizophrenia.

Treatment-resistant paranoid schizophrenia is often addressed with long-term intramuscular preparations of conventional antipsychotics (haloperidol and fluphenazine), which can be associated with the development of painful, lumpy nodules at the injection site. In this article, we present a case example of a 58-year-old male patient with paranoid schizophrenia who was treated with risperidone long-acting injection given into the deltoid muscle instead of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved gluteal muscle injection site. Use of this agent in the deltoid muscle facilitated healing

Transfer of upper pectoralis major flap for functional reconstruction of deltoid muscle.

Since January 1984, functional reconstruction of the deltoid muscle using transfer of the upper part of the pectoralis major muscle has been performed in 7 patients with deltoid dysfunction. 5-20 months follow-up (average 11) revealed marked improvement in 6 patients. During the operation, the superior and inferior parts of the pectoralis major muscle were bluntly dissected and sectioned. The upper part of this muscle was turned over and transferred to the site normally occupied by the deltoid muscle. The transposed muscle contributed to both abduction and flexion of the shoulder. The efficacy

Increased fascial thickness of the deltoid muscle in dermatomyositis and polymyositis: An ultrasound study.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the use of ultrasound to detect fascial thickening of the deltoid, vastus lateralis (VL), and rectus femoris (RF) muscles in dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM). METHODS: Fascial thickness of 7 DM and 5 PM patients was compared with that of healthy controls (n = 54). RESULTS: The deltoid fascial thickness was 2-fold greater in the DM/PM group (1.15 mm vs. 0.54 mm; P < 0.001) compared with healthy controls. Eight patients had markedly thickened deltoid fascia (>5 SD). Only 1 patient with a mild clinical presentation had normal deltoid fascial thickness. Fo

Electromyographic analysis of the deltoid and rotator cuff muscles in persons with subacromial impingement.

The purpose of this study was to compare subjects with subacromial impingement and subjects with normal shoulders with respect to muscle activity. Fifteen subjects in each group were studied by means of fine-wire electromyography. The middle deltoid and rotator cuff muscles were evaluated during isotonic scaption from 30 to 120 degrees. Overall, the impingement group demonstrated decreased mean muscle activity in comparison with the group of normal subjects. The magnitude of diminished activity was statistically significantly different (P < .05) during the 30- to 60-degrees arc for the infrasp

Concentric Needle Jitter Measurements in Voluntarily Activated Deltoid Muscle in Healthy Control Subjects.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The deltoid muscle demonstrates sensitivity in detecting abnormal decrement on repetitive nerve stimulation in cases of myasthenia gravis and congenital myasthenic syndromes. However, single-fiber electromyography (concentric needle jitter) normative data is currently lacking, which this study aims to address. METHODS: Jitter, measured by the mean consecutive difference (MCD), was assessed in the voluntarily activated deltoid muscle of 32 healthy adults (16 men and 16 women) with no known or suspected neuromuscular disease. For each subject, the mean MCD of 20 pairs was cal

Central neuromuscular dysfunction of the deltoid muscle in patients with chronic rotator cuff tears.

BACKGROUND: Previous surface electromyogram (EMG) studies have shown that chronic rotator cuff tears (RCT) may be associated with a altered activation of adjacent shoulder muscles. The effect of RCT on central neuromuscular control mechanisms of the shoulder girdle muscles such as the deltoideus muscle (DM), a key muscle of shoulder function, has as not yet been studied in detail. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study investigated the corticospinal excitability of the DM to assess the effects of RCT on the central neuromuscular function of proximal upper limb muscles. Fibrous replacement of the deltoid muscle: a remediable cause of abduction contracture of the shoulder in scleroderma.

A 32-year-old male with progressive systemic sclerosis developed shoulder abduction contractures secondary to fibrous replacement of the central portions of his deltoid muscles. Surgical release of the fibrous bands resulted in prompt restoration of nearly full shoulder motion. One month later, however, a similar band developed in the triceps muscle. Although the association in this cases may have been coincidental, the neraly simultaneous onset of muscle fibrosis and cutaneous manifestations of progressive systemic sclerosis suggests a causal relationship.

Biomechanical effects of deltoid muscle atrophy on rotator cuff tissue: a finite element study.

The deltoid muscle and rotator cuff tissue are structural components that maintain the dynamic stability of the shoulder joint. However, atrophy of the deltoid muscle may affect the stability of the shoulder joint, which in turn alters the mechanical distribution of rotator cuff tissue. Currently, the effect of muscle volume changes in the deltoid muscle on reducing the load on the rotator cuff tissue is still unknown. Therefore, this paper intends to analyze the mechanical changes of rotator cuff tissue by deltoid muscle atrophy through finite elements. Based on previously published finite el

Deltoid muscle activity in patients with reverse shoulder prosthesis at 2-year follow-up.

PURPOSE: The reverse shoulder prosthesis (RSP) was developed to relieve pain and improve functional outcomes in patients with glenohumeral arthritis and deficiency of the rotator cuff. Even if clinical and functional outcomes regarding the use of the RSP were reported by literature, data concerning progressive deltoid adaptation to this non-anatomic implant are still missing. The purpose of our study was to correlate clinical and functional outcomes with deltoid fibers activity and muscle fatigability in patients with reverse shoulder prosthesis at 2 years follow-up. METHODS: Twenty patients

Dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound and elastography assess deltoid muscle integrity after reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The outcome after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) depends on the condition of the deltoid muscle, which we assessed with new ultrasound modalities and electromyography (EMG). Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) were applied to assess perfusion and elasticity of the deltoid muscle compared with the clinical and functional outcome. METHODS: The study recruited 64 patients (mean age, 72.9 years) treated with RSA between 2004 and 2013. The deltoid muscle was examined with EMG and ultrasound imaging. Simple clinical test to detect deltoid muscle dysfunction causing weakness of abduction--"akimbo" test.

INTRODUCTION: Full range of motion and powerful shoulder abduction can be performed without any deltoid muscle function by the supplemental action of the supraspinatus and biceps brachii muscles. For evaluation of deltoid muscle function, we need to negate these actions, which can be done with the "akimbo test," in which patients place their hands on the iliac crest with abduction in the coronal plane and internal rotation of the shoulder joint while simultaneously flexing the elbow joint and pronating the forearm. METHODS: We examined the akimbo test in five patients with incomplete upper-ty
