Uremic pruritus is a common symptom in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis, but its exact pathogenesis remains rather unclear. However, severe or "intractable" pruritus may be the manifestation of another underlying disease or disorder other than uremia. Delusional parasitosis, or Ekbom syndrome, is a rare psychiatric disorder characterized by the false conviction of being infested with parasites, and it can be primary, or secondary to several medical and psychiatric disorders. We report 2 elderly HD patients who presented one after another, with delusional parasitosis

Delusional parasitosis manifests as a fixed, false belief that an individual is infested by living organisms. Primary delusional parasitosis is a psychiatric disorder with the delusion as an isolated manifestation, whereas secondary delusional parasitosis is a delusion occurring secondary to a psychiatric disorder, substance use, or medical illness. A 62-year-old woman with no psychiatric history presented to the Emergency Department with two to three months of "whole body itching" and seeing small insects crawling on her skin and in her hair. Exam of her skin and scalp was notable for no appr

INTRODUCTION: Delusional parasitosis (DP) is a syndrome characterized by the firm conviction that small living beings infest the skin. The etiology can be primary and secondary. Structural brain abnormalities in DP have only been reported in case reports often subcortical vascular encephalopathy and right-hemisphere strokes in the temporo-parietal cortex. Systematic brain imaging studies are lacking. We aimed to identify a brain region with structural lesions in patients with DP in order to better understand the pathophysiology of DP.
METHODS: Nine consecutive patients with DP in a psychiatri

BACKGROUND: Delusional parasitosis is characterized by a false belief of being infested with parasites, insects, or worms. This illness is observed in patients with Parkinson's disease and is usually related to dopaminergic treatment. To our knowledge, no cases of delusional parasitosis have been reported as a premotor symptom or non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease.
CASE SUMMARY: A 75-year-old woman presented with a complaint of itching that she ascribed to the presence of insects in her skin, and she had erythematous plaques on her trunk, arms, buttocks, and face. These symptoms started

Pellagra is associated with low levels of vitamin B3 (niacin) and/or tryptophan and often involves other other B vitamins. Since the time Gasper Casal first described the disease in 1972, it was observed that the patients with pellagra were all poor, subsisted mainly on maize, and rarely ate fresh meat. Subsequent occurrences have been in the form of epidemic outbreaks, consequent to either introduction to maize as a major food or increased consumption of other niacin-deficient diets like Jowar (Sorgum vulgare). The virtual disappearance of pellagra as an endemic health problem in recent years

Delusional parasitosis is a psychiatric illness in which patients believe that they are infested by parasites without any evidence to support this belief. Cases typically involve cutaneous manifestations. We present 2 cases of gastrointestinal delusional parasitosis, with one unfortunate fatal outcome. Our main goal is to highlight the importance of early recognition of this disease to facilitate appropriate management. Delusional infestation is considered a somatic delusional disorder, and first-line treatment involves the use of atypical antipsychotics, as recommended by the Diagnostic and S

Delusional parasitosis is a psychiatric illness characterized by a false belief of a parasite infestation, despite evidence to the contrary. The disorder typically presents as a dermatologic condition since patients often itch and pick at their skin to relieve the perceived infestation. Patients often have numerous cutaneous lesions that never heal due to persistent picking. Another hallmark presentation known as the "matchbox sign" has patients collecting "evidence" of their perceived infestation. This patient believed that he had "moths" infesting his stomach, creating "web-like" structures

INTRODUCTION: Delusional parasitosis or Ekbom syndrome is a condition described mainly in the fields of psychiatry and dermatology, with a complex diagnostic and therapeutic approach. However, it is uncommon to assess patients with this disease in infectious disease units. The objective of this work is to describe the experience of three infectious diseases departments with respect to this entity.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study of 20 patients diagnosed with delusional parasitosis in three Infectious Diseases Services was performed between 2003 and 2017.
RESULTS: The median age of

INTRODUCTION: Ekbom syndrome is a rare disease characterized by a delusional conviction on the part of the patient of infestation with cutaneous parasites. It is rarely described in an African setting. Herein we report three cases observed in Ouagadougou.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Case 1: a 40-year-old housewife, living alone since her spouse left her, consulted for a feeling of insects under the skin and exulceration progressing over the previous year. A diagnosis was made of Ekbom syndrome in a depressed patient. Case 2: a 45-year-old bachelor, unemployed and with no children, consulted in derm

Morgellons disease is a rare and controversial disorder characterized by the perception of fiber-like structures in the skin and bodily sensations such as itching and crawling due to them. Patients may cause wounds by trying to remove nonexisting objects they sense. Some practitioners suggest that the disease may be associated with infectious pathogens. However, most clinicians and studies support the hypothesis that the disease is a form of delusional parasitosis. Patients with Morgellons disease, similar to those with delusional parasitosis, have fixed beliefs about foreign bodies on their s

Delusional parasitosis is not a common presentation in hospital-based geriatric units. Our aim was to review the presentation of a sudden onset of parasitosis in an older patient who had no prior psychiatric history, and its management. This case report describes an 82-year-old man who presented with delusions of parasitosis for the past three years of his life. The report includes a longitudinal description of the patient's symptoms, signs, and manifestations during his stay at an inpatient senior mental health service center, emergency department (ED) visits, and medical floor stay along wit

Delusional parasitosis (DP) is a type of delusional disorder which is characterised by single hypochondriacal delusion in which patient believes that he/she is infested with insects/worms/parasite. The authors present a case series of four cases of DP which were assessed in the outpatient department of psychiatry of a tertiary care hospital in Western Maharashtra. Delusional parasitosis is a psychotic illness. Patients often present to dermatologists with scars that are self-inflicted because they attempt to extract the "parasites". We report a 58 -year-old female with an eight-month history of a crawling sensation on her skin and constant generalized itching, which she believed to be caused by insects and worms crawling across her skin. Examination revealed self-inflicted scratches at various stages of healing, which were limited to body parts within easy reach. The patient visited many physicians; it seems that she mutilated in an attempt to remove th

Delusional parasitosis (DP) is a psychiatric syndrome in which the patient falsely believes he or she is infested with parasites despite clear evidence to the contrary. Patients with DP generally think that mites, lice, or other insects have invaded their skin and most frequently seek treatment from dermatologists or family practitioners. These patients are usually reluctant to seek psychiatric care or to accept a referral to a psychiatrist. This article provides a comprehensive biopsychosocial understanding of the complexities of DP and suggests a practical strategy for evaluation and treatme

A 58-year-old woman suffering from delusional parasitosis tried to kill her general practitioner. Her husband shared in her beliefs but lost all delusional conviction after she was compulsorily admitted to a special hospital. The case illustrates the intractable nature and potential dangerousness of some of these cases, and their affinity to paranoia.
