Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) accounts for < 0.4% of soft tissue sarcomas. Only 35 cases of tonsillar FDCS have been reported, and majority had localized presentation. We present a case of FDCS of the tonsil, wherein a well-coordinated trimodality approach provided good disease control in advanced disease. A 53-year-old man presented with a painless and enlarging neck mass of 11-month duration, with no other symptoms. Close examination revealed a 10 × 5 cm mass at the left carotid triangle, and a 3.2 × 2.2 cm mass at the left tonsillar fossa. Imaging revealed the tumor to be unresec

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a very rare malignant tumor derived from follicular dendritic cells. Radical resection is the standard therapy for patients with local disease, but an optimal chemotherapy regimen has not been determined for unresectable disease. We report our experience of an FDCS patient with multiorgan involvement. In the present case, disease was only located in the pancreas initially and radical resection was performed. Multiple metastasis developed after the treatment and several factors that indicated a poor prognosis were observed. The present case had a very

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT)-like follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcoma is a recently described rare tumor and considered a unique entity, with different histologic appearances and behavior from those of the classical FDC sarcoma. This study analyzed the clinical and pathological findings of two such cases that the authors encountered and 36 previously reported cases identified in the literature. Assessment of all 38 cases showed a slight female predominance (2.2:1) with a median age of 56.5 years. Seventeen patients complained of abdominal discomfort or pain, while fifteen patients had no

Extranodal follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcomas are not a common phenomenon. Due to the scarcity of the identified cases reported in the literature, FDC is probably under-recognized and commonly misdiagnosed. The diagnosis of FDC sarcomas is based on node-based spindle cell lesions, and the expression of CD21, CD35 and clusterin. The most commonly involved extranodal sites include the oral cavity, tonsil, gastrointestinal tract and liver. With the aid of immunohistochemical analysis and the two most reliable FDC markers, CD21 and CD35, the diagnostic accuracy has improved. When FDC sarcoma

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare neoplasm that originates from follicular dendritic cells in lymphoid follicles. This disease usually involves the lymph nodes, and especially the head and neck area. Rarely, extranodal sites may be affected, including tonsil, the oral cavity, liver, spleen and the gastrointestinal tract. We report here on the imaging findings of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the abdomen that involved the retroperitoneal lymph nodes and colon. It shows as a well-defined, enhancing homogenous mass with internal necrosis and regional lymphadenopathy.

Follicular dendritic cells (FDC) constitute an essential component of B cell follicles, normally serving as antigen-presenting cells and as cells regulating the germinal center reaction. FDC sarcoma is a very rare tumor. We report the case of a 55-year-old male patient who showed persistent cervical lymph node swelling. On biopsy the tumor consisted of spindle cells with nuclear atypia. Immunophenotypic investigation of the tumor tissue revealed a FDC sarcoma of a cervical lymph node. The tumor cells were characterized immunohistochemically especially by the expression of CD21 and focal expres

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare malignancy, often challenging to diagnose due to its nonspecific presentation and resemblance to other neoplasms. This case highlights a locally advanced nasopharyngeal FDCS initially misdiagnosed as a meningioma, underscoring the importance of differential diagnosis in unusual tumor presentations. A 77-year-old patient presented with nasal obstruction for 3 months. Imaging studies revealed a mass in the nasopharynx prolapsing into the oropharynx, leading to an initial diagnosis of meningioma based on its radiologic appearance. Surgical resect

BACKGROUND: Follicular dendritic cell sarcomas (FDCSs) and histiocytic sarcomas (HSs) are exceedingly rare tumors. Most of the data on those entities are based on case reports or small case series. The natural history and response to different treatment modalities have not been well established.
AIMS: To analyze the clinicopathologic features, immunophenotypic profile, treatment responses and to add to the existing data on FDCS and HS.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive study.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: The study was conducted at the department of Oncopathology at a tertiary care cancer hos

A 53-year-old female with a history of HLA-B27 positive polyarthritis underwent a splenectomy due to an incidental splenic lesion, which was confirmed as an inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT). Afterwards, two liver lesions were found and histopathological examination revealed inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (IPT-like FDCS). The patient received NSAIDs, corticosteroids, antibiotics and azathioprine, with no response. Within the next few months, there was an abrupt clinical worsening due to rapid progression of the hepatic lesions and a massive hepatomegaly. New biops

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic features of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) and its differential diagnosis.
METHODS: Ten cases of FDCS were studied by light microscopy, immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization. The clinical features and follow-up information were analyzed.
RESULTS: Amongst the 10 cases of FDCS studied, the male-to-female ratio was 1:1. The mean age of the patients was 42 years. Six of them were located in cervical and peritoneal lymph nodes and four in extranodal sites (including tonsil, pelvic cavity, tail of pancreas and spleen). Histologically, th

Follicular dendritic cell sarcomas of the tonsil are very rare tumors. Only 10 cases have been published in the English-language medical literature. We present an additional case that occurred in a 27-year-old woman. She presented with a tumor of the right tonsil. Histological sections of tonsillar biopsies and tonsillectomy suggested that this tumor was a nerve sheath tumor or a malignant melanoma. Histological examination and immunohistochemical study were reviewed. The final diagnosis was follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. She underwent a transoral resection of the right oropharynx with ips

The diagnosis of follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcoma can be challenging because of its morphologic overlaps with many other spindle cell neoplasms and, therefore, new phenotypic markers will be helpful in its differential diagnosis. Podoplanin is a mucin-type transmembrane glycoprotein that has recently been detected in reactive FDCs. In this study, we investigated the expression patterns of podoplanin using a new mouse monoclonal antibody D2-40, and compared them with CD21, a well-established FDC marker, in a comprehensive panel of cases. The panel included 4 FDC sarcomas, 38 spindle cell

An elderly woman presented with generalized lymphadenopathy, several systemic symptoms, and splenomegaly. An inguinal lymph node excision revealed a compound picture. One aspect of the lymph node morphology, including cells with follicular T-helper cell phenotype, was most consistent with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. The other component, revealing spindle cells forming whorls with immunostaining for CD21, CD23, and fascin, might be an integral part of this T-cell lymphoma. However, due to the often massive involvement of the nodal tissue by these follicular dendritic cells, these areas

Follicular dendritic cell sarcomas (FDCSs) are rare tumors arising from follicular dendritic cells in lymphoid tissue. Fewer than 20 cases have been described in the English-language literature. We describe the second case of an FDCS with primary liver involvement. The initial diagnosis was lymphoma, and appropriate treatment was prescribed. After the initial treatment failed, additional biopsy samples were obtained. Standard pathologic analysis and immunophenotyping for a panel of monoclonal antibodies were performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue and frozen sections. The patholog

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare dendritic/histiocytic tumor of intermediate malignant potential, which often involves extranodal sites, most commonly the gastrointestinal tract and mediastinum with only 5 cases reported in the female genital tract. We present the clinical and pathologic features of 2 such examples arising in the uterine corpus. Both patients (63 and 72-yr old) presented with postmenopausal bleeding and underwent an endometrial biopsy diagnostic of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma that was followed by hysterectomy. The tumors were polypoid, 3.5 and 5.0 cm, and were

Dendritic cell sarcomas are rare tumours of antigen presenting cells. Data regarding their biology, management and outcomes are sparse. We analysed 66 patients with follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS). Six patients also had Castleman disease, 9 had another malignancy and 13 had an autoimmune disease. Fifty-four per cent of patients presented with localized disease and 46% with systemic involvement. The median progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) following frontline therapy was 21 and 50 months, respectively. Survival outcomes were significantly inferior in patients with extran
