Reaction mechanism of palladium-catalyzed silastannation of allenes by density functional theory.

The reaction mechanism of Pd(0)-catalyzed allenes silastannation reaction is investigated by the density functional method B3LYP. The overall reaction mechanism is examined. For the allene insertion step, the Pd-Si bond is preferred over the Pd-Sn bond. The electronic mechanism of the allene insertion into Pd-Si bond to form sigma-vinylpalladium (terminal-insertion) and sigma-allylpalladium (internal-insertion) insertion products is discussed in terms of the electron donation and back-donation. It is found that the electron back-donation is significant for both terminal- and internal-insertion

Controlling ⟨Ŝ2⟩ in broken-symmetry density functional theory calculations via constrained optimization.

Accurate determination of magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) from density functional theory (DFT) remains challenging, particularly for open-shell systems where broken-symmetry (BS) solutions suffer from spurious spin contamination that systematically exaggerates J values. Several methods have been proposed to address this problem by adjusting the mapping scheme from the DFT energies to the Heisenberg-Dirac-van Vleck effective spin Hamiltonian energies. In this work, we explore a different route by imposing a constraint on the DFT energy that enforces a target value of the spin-squared e

Application of the noncollinear Scalmani-Frisch formalism to current density functional theory.

We generalize the noncollinear formalism proposed by Scalmani and Frisch [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 8, 2193 (2012)] to include the particle and spin current densities for meta-generalized gradient approximations and local hybrid functionals. This allows us to fully include the impact of spin-orbit coupling in relativistic calculations and for applications to finite magnetic fields. For the latter, we use London atomic orbitals to ensure gauge origin invariance. It is shown that this formalism is superior to the more common canonical noncollinear approach in relativistic calculations, as it natur

Properties of Bisdiazo Compounds and Their Derived Carbenes via Density Functional Theory.

To better understand the properties of carbene and biscarbene species derived from bisdiazo compounds with varied terminal groups, a density functional theory (DFT) study was conducted on bisdiazo compounds with four terminal groups (bisdiazo-X, where X=H, Me, NO2 and NH2) and their mono- and dicarbene derivatives. The studies included computation of their frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), electronic structures, electrostatic potential (ESP) and polarity, as well as their IR and UV-vis spectra and their color in THF solutions. For bisdiazo compounds at both ground and excited states, the com

Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics with subsystem density functional theory: application to crystalline pentacene.

In this work, we report the development and assessment of the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics approach with the electronic structure calculations based on the linearly scaling subsystem density functional method. The approach is implemented in an open-source embedded Quantum Espresso/Libra software specially designed for nonadiabatic dynamics simulations in extended systems. As proof of the applicability of this method to large condensed-matter systems, we examine the dynamics of nonradiative relaxation of excess excitation energy in pentacene crystals with the simulation supercells containing

Analytic Nuclear Gradients for Complete Active Space Linearized Pair-Density Functional Theory.

Accurately modeling photochemical reactions is difficult due to the presence of conical intersections and locally avoided crossings, as well as the inherently multiconfigurational character of excited states. As such, one needs a multistate method that incorporates state interaction in order to accurately model the potential energy surface at all nuclear coordinates. The recently developed linearized pair-density functional theory (L-PDFT) is a multistate extension of multiconfiguration PDFT, and it has been shown to be a cost-effective post-MCSCF method (as compared to more traditional and ex

Fisetin and Robinetin antiradical activity under solvent effect: density functional theory study.

The structural and antioxidant activity of two flavonols, namely, Fisetin and Robinetin, have been investigated employing the density functional theory (DFT) using B3LYP functional and 6-311++G (d, p) basis set. The calculations were performed in the gas phase and under the solvent effect of water, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), methanol, and benzene. The Hydrogen-Atom Transfer (HAT), single Electron Transfer Followed by Proton Transfer (SET-PT), and sequential Proton Loss Electron Transfer (SPLET) mechanisms were investigated to rationalize the radical scavenging capacities and to identify the fav

Density Functional Theory-Based Studies Predict Carbon Nanotubes as Effective Mycolactone Inhibitors.

Fullerenes, boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have all been extensively explored for biomedical purposes. This work describes the use of BNNTs and CNTs as mycolactone inhibitors. Density functional theory (DFT) has been used to investigate the chemical properties and interaction mechanisms of mycolactone with armchair BNNTs (5,5) and armchair CNTs (5,5). By examining the optimized structure and interaction energy, the intermolecular interactions between mycolactone and nanotubes were investigated. The findings indicate that mycolactone can be physically adsorbed on a

Preferential Binding of Lanthanides to Methanol Dehydrogenase Evaluated with Density Functional Theory.

Methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) is an enzyme used by certain bacteria for the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde, which is a necessary metabolic reaction. The discovery of a lanthanide-dependent MDH reveals that lanthanide ions (Ln3+) have a role in biology. Two types of MDH exist in methane-utilizing bacteria: one that is Ca2+-dependent (MxaF) and another that is Ln3+-dependent. Given that the triply charged Ln3+ are strongly hydrated, it is not clear how preference for Ln3+ is manifested and if the Ca2+-dependent MxaF protein can also bind Ln3+ ions. A computational approach was used to esti

The ferroelastic phase transition in hydrogen cyanide studied by density functional theory.

We report calculations of the crystal structures and lattice dynamics of the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases of the molecular crystal hydrogen cyanide, HCN, using density functional theory methods. By treating negative pressure as a proxy for raising temperature we show that the ferroelastic phase transition involves softening of a transverse acoustic mode, and confirm that the phase transition is discontinuous. Analysis of the complete phonon spectrum shows that the acoustic modes are responsible both for the very large thermal expansion seen in HCN and also for the thermodynamic driving f

Chemical Tuning of Magnetic Exchange Couplings Using Broken-Symmetry Density Functional Theory.

With broken-symmetry Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations, it is demonstrated that the ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic character of two prototypical binuclear copper complexes can be modified, both in the sign and in magnitude, by means of chemical substitutions operated on the bridges connecting the two magnetic centers. The level of detail provided by the magnetic exchange decomposition in terms of direct exchange, kinetic exchange, and core polarization puts forward the relative importance of the different bridges. At variance with the principal bridge for which chemical sub

Density functional theory study of the platinum-catalyzed cyclopropanation reaction with olefin.

A computational study of the platinum-catalyzed cyclopropanation reaction with olefin is presented. The model system is formed by an ethylene molecule and the active catalytic species, which forms from a CH2 fragment and the Cl2Pt(PH3)2 complex. The results show that the active catalytic species is not a metal-carbene of the type (PH3)2Cl2Pt=CH2 but two carbenoid complexes which can exist in almost two degenerate forms, namely (PH3)2Pt(CH2Cl)Cl (carbenoid A) and (PH3)Pt(CH2PH3)Cl2 (carbenoid B). The reaction proceeds through three pathways: methylene transfer, carbometalation for carbenoid A,

Are Ba11Cd6Sb12 and Sr11Cd6Sb12 Zintl phases or not? A density-functional theory study.

The chemical bonding and the electronic band structures of two isoelectronic and isostructural Zintl compounds, Sr(11)Cd(6)Sb(12) and Ba(11)Cd(6)Sb(12), have been studied on the basis of the density-functional theory (DFT) using the tight-binding linear-muffin-tin-orbital (TB-LMTO-ASA) approach and the local-density approximation (LDA). These results reveal that the classic Zintl reasoning and the concept of two-center two-electron bonds cannot explain the subtleties of this complex structure type. The computations also suggest that the antimony dimers present in these structures play an impor

Density Functional Theory Calculations of Spin Polarization for Diradicals in Single-Molecule Junctions.

Spin-dependent electron transport through chiral molecules, namely the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, emerged as promising for quantum applications or spintronics, among other applications, but mostly considered for closed-shell systems that exhibit spin polarization (P s). In this work, we investigate P s in diradicals, which is analogous but distinct from CISS in closed-shell systems that are driven, in part, by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We report on the analysis of P s for open-shell singlet and triplet organic molecular junctions with finite Au(111) electrodes

Review of the Applications of Density Functional Theory Calculations in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, featuring a superior theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh/kg and a high specific capacity of 1675 mAh/g for sulfur cathodes, have emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation, high-energy-density energy storage technologies. Nevertheless, their commercialization has been hindered by some bottlenecks, including the polysulfide (LiPSs) shuttle effect, severe volume expansion, and sluggish reaction kinetics. Density Functional Theory (DFT), serving as an atomic-scale computational tool, offers essential theoretical assistance for clarifying the mechanisms

Quantum-Electrodynamical Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Description of Molecules in Optical Cavities.

We introduce a quantum-electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory with a tensor-product representation (QED-TDDFT-TP) to model molecules strongly coupled to quantized cavity fields. By combining real-space electronic wave functions with truncated Fock-space photon states, the method captures light-matter correlations at a computational cost close to standard DFT. Benchmark calculations show good agreement with QED-FCI and QED-CASCI for ground-state energies and polaritonic spectra. Applications to weakly bound dimers─including (H2)2, Ar2, (H2O)2, and HF─demonstrate that cavity c

Organophosphate ethyl paraoxon on Ag and Au surfaces: a density functional theory perspective.

Organophosphates, a class of organic compounds containing phosphorus, have garnered considerable attention due to their widespread application in agriculture. Understanding their optical properties is crucial for food safety, toxicity analysis, and early detection. In this work, the optical properties of an organophosphate containing a paraoxon moiety and its interactions with gold and silver surfaces are investigated using density functional theory. The differences between physisorption and chemisorption of ethyl paraoxon, a commonly used model organophosphate compound, on metal surfaces expl

Exploring molecule-surface interactions of urania via IR spectroscopy and density functional theory.

Within the framework of surface-adsorbate interactions relevant to chemical reactions of spent nuclear fuel, the study of actinide oxide systems remains one of the most challenging tasks at both the experimental and computational levels. Consequently, our understanding of the effect of their unique electronic configurations on surface reactions lags behind that of d-block oxides. To investigate the surface properties of this system, we present the first infrared spectroscopy analysis of carbon monoxide (CO) interaction with a monocrystalline actinide oxide, UO2(111). Thermodynamics of hydrogen adsorption on ruthenium fcc surfaces: a density functional theory study.

Within the framework of the application of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) to store, transport and re-generate hydrogen, ruthenium (Ru) is by far the most widely used catalyst. In its natural bulk state, the most abundant phase observed is the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phase, but experimental studies on nanoparticles have shown that the face-centred cubic (fcc) phases are also present and are highly active in catalytic reactions. In this study, we have carried out calculations based on the density functional theory, with the generalized gradient approximation and long-range dispersi

Learned free-energy functionals from pair-correlation matching for dynamical density functional theory.

Classical density functional theory (cDFT) and dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) are modern statistical mechanical theories for modeling many-body colloidal systems at the one-body density level. The theories hinge on knowing the excess free-energy accurately, which is, however, not feasible for most practical applications. Dijkman et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 134, 056103 (2025)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.134.056103] recently showed how a neural excess free-energy functional for cDFT can be learned from bulk simulations via pair-correlation matching. In this article, we demonstrate how t
