Dental treatment is the commonest reason for a child to be in hospital in the UK. This is a shocking statistic for a preventable disease. How can we reduce the high numbers of dental general anaesthetics? It is essential that dental treatment under general anaesthesia (GA) is fully justifiable, ensuring that the right patients receive the right treatment. Guidance for general dental practitioners on when to refer a child for a dental GA is discussed. Treatment planning for this dentally high-risk group of children requires a holistic approach. It is complex and requires an experienced and comp

With the use of newly issued guidelines, King's College Hospital has developed new standard operating procedures specifically for the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the unprecedented nature of the current global pandemic, this paper highlights how paediatric dental emergencies can be managed safely and efficiently, as well as new measures which can help reduce transmission of the virus. Furthermore, an audit of the current paediatric dental emergencies attending the hospital is presented. Seventy-six percent of patients attending met the agreed local criteria for urgent treatment, with the most comm

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, there has been a decrease in dental diseases in Australia; however, the number of preventable dental hospital admissions has not diminished. This review reports on the factors associated with preventable dental hospital admissions in Australia.
METHODS: A search of five databases was conducted using Medical subject headings/Emtree terms and Index terms. All original studies, published between January1965 and March 2018 in English, based on the Australian population, and examining the prevalence of oral conditions as a cause for emergency department prese

INTRODUCTION: Child neglect has a significant impact on children's physical and emotional health and development with lifelong consequences. Dental decay can lead to maxillofacial space infections which can have life-threatening complications and may indicate that a child has suffered dental neglect.
AIMS AND METHOD: In this retrospective audit, we reviewed children below sixteen years who were admitted under oral and maxillofacial surgery for incision and drainage of a dental/facial abscess, under general anaesthesia, between January 2015 and January 2017, to understand if they had experienc

Dental and oral health and their relationship to nutritional status among a group of alcohol misusers (n = 107) from south London is reported. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) questionnaire was validated as an accurate and reliable screening questionnaire for use in alcohol misuse detection by a dentist. Half of the study population consumed >200 units of alcohol/week, and 80% were heavy smokers. A high incidence of tooth wear and trauma to the dentition was recorded. Eight subjects had oral mucosal lesions, including two previously treated carcinomas. The dental health in

UNLABELLED: In everyday practice, dentists are confronted with an increasing number of patients with complex medical problems. There is divergence of opinion among dentists regarding how to obtain a thorough medical/social history.
PURPOSE: The objective of this audit is to produce a standardised medical history in order to identify the medically compromised patient attending the general dental practitioner. At present in the Dublin Dental School and Hospital, there are three different methods: a verbal enquiry, and a written or an electronic questionnaire. This study was undertaken to identi

This article provides a summary of the main outcome measures currently available and in use within modern cleft care. The fact that there are such a diverse range, including surgical, orthodontic, dental, speech and patient satisfaction measures, is a reflection of the complex, multidisciplinary and longitudinal nature of the care provided. The use of such measures of outcome is essential in the auditing and drive for continued improvements in the standards of care for patients affected with cleft lip and palate.

Many indices and scoring systems exist for assessing skeletal patterns and malocclusion but none have been universally adopted by teams providing orthognathic surgery in the UK. Using a standardised objective measure of a patient's condition is important both for service provision, treatment allocation, and other clinical governance domains. The Severity and Outcome Assessment tool (SOA) developed by the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) and British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) provides a standardised method of assessing patients throughout the orthognathic pathway an

BACKGROUND: This study compared the reasons for dental presentations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian adults at the Nepean Centre for Oral Health, NSW, Australia.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on adult patients presenting between 1 July and 31 December 2019. Clinical notes were audited and categorized as either 'emergency' (pain, dental infection, dental trauma, loose teeth or dental implants, bleeding) or 'conservative' (dental check-ups, examinations, prosthodontic, restorative, periodontal, or non-emergency endodontic therapy).
RESULTS: A total of 466

To mark the first quarter century of the existence of the Oral Surgery unit at St. Mary's Hospital, Chapelizod, an audit was undertaken. Twenty-nine thousand, three hundred and seventy-four (29,374) entries in the operations register were analysed, examining annual totals, categories of operation, the changing patterns of anaesthesia, including cancellations on the day, and the evolution of a true day-case service. The results showed a decline in total numbers and in some operation categories. The most striking reductions were in extractions of carious teeth and in preprosthetic surgery. The m

Dental X-ray imaging is widely used in daily dental practice and is usually considered safe because radiation doses are low. This belief mainly comes from studies carried out in hospitals and standard dental clinics, where walls and rooms are built with proper radiation shielding. However, dental radiology is not always performed in such environments. In many industrial and corporate workplaces, dental clinics are located inside office buildings that use thin, lightweight, or prefabricated walls. In these settings, wall shielding might be overlooked, absent or not regularly checked. During den

This paper introduces a dental screening pro forma designed for the dental assessment of adult patients who are starting or currently taking medications that pose them at risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Medications considered are those with current Drug Safety Update alerts for MRONJ from the Medications and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. These include anti-resorptive drugs and some anti-angiogenic drugs.Patients taking these medications face a risk of osteonecrosis from certain dental procedures, dental pathology or chronic trauma. Although rare, MRONJ is

BACKGROUND: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious, debilitating condition of the jaw bones. Dental extraction is the most significant independent risk factor for MRONJ. This interim study aimed to evaluate the demographics, medical data and outcomes of patients at risk for MRONJ who underwent dental extractions in a dedicated MRONJ clinic following a risk reduction protocol at a large public dental clinic in New South Wales Health.
METHODS: A retrospective study analysed demographic and clinical data of patients at risk for MRONJ who underwent dental extractions bet

ISSUES ADDRESSED: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in children. Indigenous children reported a disproportionately higher prevalence of dental disease compared to their age-matched counterparts. To improve access to dental care a community-controlled service provides culturally appropriate dental services on the site of an Indigenous primary and secondary school. The dental clinic utilises a "call from class" model of care. Consent forms seeking permission to undertake a dental examination without a parent/guardian present during school hours are sent home. W

The presence of bacterial biofilms within dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) can cause secondary bacterial infections in immunocompromised patients. As a result, the management of biofilms within waterlines has always concerned medical and dental professionals. In February 2020, an internal audit identified the high bacterial counts within the DUWLs at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi and this paper discusses a pragmatic approach to improving the water quality of DUWLs.A three-person committee was developed and the area for improvement was identified as the contaminated DUWLs.
