Antibacterial Activity of a Lysin LysP53 against Streptococcus mutans.

Dental caries is a common disease affecting quality of life globally. In the present study, we found that a bacteriophage lysin LysP53 against Acinetobacter baumannii possesses selective activity on Streptococcus mutans, the main etiological agent of dental caries, even in low pH caries microenvironments, whereas only minor LysP53 activity was detected against Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus oralis, and Streptococcus mitis. Testing activity against S. mutans planktonic cells showed that 4 μM LysP53 could kill more than 84% of S. mutans within 1 min in buffer with optimal pHs ranging fro

TLR4 activation by lipopolysaccharide and Streptococcus mutans induces differential regulation of proliferation and migration in human dental pulp stem cells.

INTRODUCTION: Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are suspected to be an important part of the innate immune response of dental pulp, which is triggered by microorganisms that progressively invade the human tooth during the formation of caries. This study was performed to elucidate the expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in dental pulp of deep caries and to determine whether TLR4 modulates the proliferation and migration of DPSCs. METHODS: Pulp tissue samples were collected from freshly extracted human wisdom tooth. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence were performed to determine the

Examination of three different methods of dental caries scoring during eruption of the premolar and second molar teeth in 10- to 13-year-old children using cross-sectional data.

OBJECTIVE: Premolars and second permanent molars mainly erupt in children between 10 and 13 years of age. This age range provides a relatively large number of caries-free or near caries-free tooth surfaces at a baseline measurement that can become carious during such trials. Since traditional DMFS scoring does not take the addition of new surfaces into account, the aim of this study was to compare that scoring system to two methods where sound surfaces are included in the scoring. METHODOLOGY: The comparison was done in a cross-sectional caries prevalence study so that caries progression and
