Ultrastructural examinations showed the diameter of cement lacunae to be greater in infundibular cement than in peripheral cement of upper cheek teeth, which in turn was greater than in the peripheral cement of the lower cheek teeth. However, numbers of lacunae/unit area remained similar in these 3 dentinal region. Two types of cemental hypoplasia were found in equine cheek teeth. The first type was termed central infundibular cemental hypoplasia and was confined to the central region of infundibular cement. The cement adjacent to these frequently large defects was very porous and contained la

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the reliability and failure modes of implants with a microthreaded or smooth design at the crestal region, restored with screwed or cemented crowns. The postulated null hypothesis was that the presence of microthreads in the implant cervical region would not result in different reliability and strength to failure than smooth design, regardless of fixation method, when subjected to step-stress accelerated life-testing (SSALT) in water.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty four dental implants (3.3 × 10 mm) were divided into four groups (n = 21) according to implant ma

Dental interfaces are subject to mixed-mode loading. This study provides practical guidance for determining interfacial fracture toughness of dental ceramic systems. We address interfacial fracture of a composite resin cement sandwiched between two dental ceramic materials. Emphasis is placed on sandwich disc specimens with cracks originating from elliptical-shaped flaws near the center, for which analytical fracture mechanics methods fail to predict. The interaction integral method is used to provide accurate finite element solutions for cracks with elliptical-shaped flaws in a Brazil-nut-san

Although glass ionomer cement (GIC) is frequently adopted as the filling material for decayed teeth, it shows disadvantages like poor mechanical property and a low concentration on fluoride release, in which its clinical applications are limited. In this article, fluorinated graphene (FG) and ZnS:Mn2+ mechanoluminescence were dexterously adopted to GIC, thus successfully constructing the ternary composite glass ionomer cement material with high-strength anticaries to treat dental caries via filling. SEM, XRS, XRD, and FTIR were adopted to characterize the structural morphology and chemical com

OBJECTIVE: Aiming to achieve bioactive dental resins that promote healing of surrounding tissues, we developed novel poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate/trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate) (polyHEMA/TMPT) particles. These particles have been reported to be useful as a non-biodegradable carrier for fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) in vitro. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of an adhesive resin incorporating FGF-2-loaded polymer particles to promote tissue regeneration in vitro and in vivo.
METHODS: Experimental adhesive resins were prepared by incorporating FGF-2-loaded polyHEM

Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) is promising for bone and dentin repair and regeneration. However, there has been no report of biphasic CPC for inducing dentin regeneration. The aim of this study was to develop a novel biphasic CPC containing β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), and investigate its effects on odontogenic differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) and macrophage polarization. New biphasic CPC was formulated with different ratios of β-TCP to an equimolar mixture of tetracalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous. Mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and odon

Long-term applications of dental resin composites are restricted by their limited service lives due to microcrack-induced fractures, while existing self-healing systems face challenges including insufficient biocompatibility and a lack of standardized evaluation. A self-healing resin composite incorporating glass ionomer cement-based silica microcapsules (GIC-SiO2 MCs) was developed with controlled particle size covering macro- and micro-fillers via optimized synthetic parameters. Microcracks ruptured MCs, releasing healing liquid that reacted with powder in the resin matrix to form crack-seal

BACKGROUND: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is widely used in pediatric dentistry due to its fluoride-releasing properties and strong adhesion to tooth structure. However, enhancing its antimicrobial efficacy remains a challenge. Incorporating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been proposed as a solution to increase the antimicrobial properties of GIC without compromising its mechanical strength.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study investigated the effects of integrating varying concentrations of AgNPs into GIC on its antimicrobial efficacy against common oral pathogens and its mechanical properties.
