The effect of Chlorohexidine, Er:YAG laser and diode laser 980 nm as dental cavity disinfectants on dentine morphology and microleakage of composite restoration: an in vitro study.

INTRODUCTION: Residual microorganisms may remain even after thorough mechanical cavity preparation, leading to secondary caries. Additionally, the smear layer generated during this process can impair the adhesion between composite resin and dentine and limit the penetration of disinfectants into dentinal tubules. This study aimed to compare the effects of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), 980 nm diode laser, and Er:YAG laser as cavity disinfectants on dentine morphology, mineral content, and microleakage of composite restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty extracted sound human primary molars were r

Effective cleaning and decontamination of the internal air and water channels, heads and head-gears of multiple contra-angle dental handpieces using an enzymatic detergent and automated washer-disinfection in a dental hospital setting.

BACKGROUND: Dental handpieces (DHPs) are reusable invasive medical devices that must be cleaned, decontaminated, lubricated and steam sterilized after use. DHPs have a complex internal design including narrow channels, contamination of which can compromise sterilization. DHPs are not designed for routine disassembly, making cleaning/decontamination efficacy difficult to monitor. Washer-disinfection is the preferred method of decontaminating DHPs, but few studies have investigated its direct effectiveness at reducing microbial contamination internally. AIMS: To use contra-angle DHPs as a model

Disinfectants Used in Stomatology and SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Effective disinfection is a basic procedure in medical facilities, including those conducting dental surgeries, where treatments for tissue discontinuity are also performed, as it is an important element of infection prevention. Disinfectants used in dentistry and dental and maxillofacial surgery include both inorganic (hydrogen peroxide, sodium chlorite-hypochlorite) and organic compounds (ethanol, isopropanol, peracetic acid, chlorhexidine, eugenol). Various mechanisms of action of disinfectants have been reported, which include destruction of the structure of bacterial and fungal cell membr

Disinfectants' effect on mercury release from amalgam.

BACKGROUND: Mercury environmental discharge is under increased scrutiny by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Dental amalgam should be processed properly to prevent an additional environmental burden. Some processing agencies require that submitted amalgam be noninfectious. Investigations have demonstrated that oxidizing disinfectants mobilize mercury from amalgam into solution and add mercury to the environmental burden if it is disposed of improperly. The authors conducted a study to evaluate the effect of representative disinfectants on amalgam mercury release. METHODS: The au

Differential susceptibility of cariogenic and commensal oral Streptococcus species to chemically distinct disinfectants including ozone water in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus mutans is the primary causative agent of dental caries. Many Streptococcus species present in the oral cavity are thought to increase the risk of infective endocarditis and pneumonia. Conversely, S. sanguinis, S. oralis, S. salivarius, S. gordonii, and S. mitis are streptococci frequently isolated from the oral cavity and are thought to suppress the colonisation of cariogenic bacteria. Recently, mouthwashes have gained attention as a preventive strategy against dental caries. Therefore, we conducted an experiment to verify the caries prevention effect of various disin

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Use of Quaternary Ammonium Compound Disinfectants in Healthcare Facilities Within Selected States in the United States of America.

Introduction Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are the active ingredient in the majority of disinfectants approved for use against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although widely used, they have been linked to infertility and birth defects in animals, and have been shown to increase proinflammatory cytokines, decrease mitochondrial function, and disrupt sterol biosynthetic pathways in a dose-dependent manner in humans. This study examined if there was an increased use of QAC-based disinfectants amo

[The effect of different kinds and concentrations of disinfectants on decontamination of healing abutments].

Cross infection by remnants of microorganisms represents a latent risk in the dental practice. This study confirms that used healing abutments that have undergone the prescribed disinfection and sterilization procedures are still contaminated. Such residual contamination can be reduced by a simple, additional disinfection procedure. Different disinfectants, in increasing concentrations, were compared with a control group that had not been subject to any additional disinfection procedure. Newly supplied healing abutments were studied, as a second control. The findings show an additional disinfe

Laboratory evaluation of anti-biofilm agents for use in dental unit waterlines.

Dental unit waterline biofilm has been recognized as a potential point of contamination and a risk to patients with any level of immunocompromise. Biofilm in dental unit waterlines, once established, has proven formidable to efforts in disinfection/disruption. This project compared standardized evaluation techniques by assessing the efficacy of a variety of agents that have been reported or suggested as useful in surface disinfection and/or antiseptic protocols. The zones of inhibition, minimum inhibitory/bactericidal concentrations and use-dilution with stainless steel carrier replicates test
