[Cariostatic mechanisms of fluoride and its effects on human beings].

Fluorine is ubiquitous in man's environment, rocks, soil, water, air, etc, and mainly is in the form of inorganic fluoride (compounds of fluorine) and utilized extensively for industrial and medical purposes. It is also known that fluoride has both beneficial and toxic effects in man. One of the most beneficial effects of fluorine on human health is the application of fluoride solution for the prevention or reduction the incidence of dental caries. The major cariostatic mechanisms is believed to be that fluoride reduces dental caries through influencing the morphology of teeth by reducing the

Effect of adding soluble calcium and pyrophosphate to fluoride toothpaste on enamel remineralization: An in vitro study.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the remineralization ability of a fluoride, soluble calcium, and pyrophosphate (FCaP) toothpaste with that of a fluoride-only toothpaste. DESIGN: Three toothpastes with identical base compositions were prepared: 1450 ppm fluoride (F = 76 µmol/g), 1450 ppm FCaP (F = 76 µmol/g, Ca = 23 µmol/g, P = 23 µmol/g), and 5000 ppm fluoride (F = 263 µmol/g). Soluble fluoride and calcium levels were evaluated by diluting each toothpaste with water (100 mg/10 mL). Bovine enamel specimens with artificially induced subsurface lesions underwent a 21-day pH cycling regimen, with continuo

The Potential Systemic Role of Diet in Dental Caries Development and Arrest: A Narrative Review.

Current conceptualizations of dental caries etiology center primarily on the local role of sugar, starch, or other fermentable carbohydrates on tooth enamel demineralization-a well-established and empirically supported mechanism. However, in addition to this mechanism, studies dating back to the early 1900s point to an important systemic role of diet and nutrition, particularly from pasture-raised animal-source foods (ASF), in dental caries etiology and arrest. Findings from animal and human studies suggest that adherence to a diet high in calcium, phosphorus, fat-soluble vitamins A and D, and

Protective influence of experimentally formed salivary pellicle on enamel erosion. An in vitro study.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate dental erosion in 0.1 and 1.0% citric acid in vitro by several different methods and to assess the protective potential of experimentally formed salivary pellicle (24 h in vitro). Bovine enamel slabs were embedded in epoxy resin and polished. Erosion was performed in citric acid for 1, 5 or 10 min and recorded as microhardness loss, as changes of surface roughness (R(a), R(t) and R(zDIN)) and as calcium release. Additionally, erosive alterations were observed with scanning electron microscopy. Significant microhardness loss on non-pellicle-covered spec

Effect of lipids on the lactic acid retardation capacity of tooth enamel and cementum pellicles formed in vitro from saliva of caries-resistant and caries-susceptible human adults.

The lipid content and composition of these pellicles and the effect of lipids on their ability to retard the diffusion of lactic acid were investigated. Lipids accounted for 22.4% of the dry weight of caries-resistant enamel pellicle and 19.2% of caries-resistant cementum pellicle; the pellicle of caries-susceptible enamel contained 24.6% lipids and that of caries-susceptible cementum, 23.4%. Enamel and cementum pellicles from caries-resistant saliva had a significantly lower content of neutral lipids and phospholipids, whereas the glycolipid content was lower, although not significantly, in c

The caries balance: the basis for caries management by risk assessment.

Dental caries progression or reversal depends upon the balance between demineralization and remineralization. The 'Caries Balance' is determined by the relative weight of the sums of pathological factors and protective factors. Minimally invasive dentistry aims at the least possible removal of enamel or dentin, including reducing pathological factors and enhancing remineralization to avoid any removal of hard tissues. A structured caries risk assessment should be carried out based upon the concept of the caries balance. Following the risk assessment a treatment plan is devised which leads to t

Efficacy of chlorhexidine solution with fluoride varnishing in preventing enamel softening by Streptococcus mutans in an artificial mouth.

For study of the enamel-protective effect of chlorhexidine-fluoride applications, the labial surfaces of pieces of bovine incisors were treated with 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate solution, with Duraphat fluoride varnish, or with both of the above agents, while one group was treated with distilled water and one was left as an untreated control. Furthermore, a placebo varnish was used in the chlorhexidine- and distilled-water-treated groups; all the varnishes were removed after 24 h. The enamel slabs were mounted pairwise in an artificial mouth to form approximal contacts. The teeth were continuo

Acid resistance of human enamel by brushing with and without abrasive dentifrice.

Daily brushing with and without abrasive dentifrice pieces of was performed on the ground surfaces of human enamel attached to resin plates which were exposed to the oral cavities of 4 subjects for 8 weeks. The difference in acid resistance between a pair of enamel pieces obtained from the same tooth was examined with atomic absorption spectrometry. After etching with a lactate buffer solution at pH 4.5, the amount of Ca dissolved from the enamel in each pair by brushing without dentifrice was significantly lower than that when brushing with an by abrasive paste. Under SEM, the brushing with p

Changes in heated and in laser-irradiated human tooth enamel and their probable effects on solubility.

Enamel of intact human teeth laser irradiated in vitro under certain conditions is known to have less subsurface demineralization than unirradiated enamel on exposure to acid; consequently, the potential use of laser irradiance to reduce caries is apparent. The laser-induced physical and/or chemical changes that cause this reduced subsurface demineralization are not known. A laser-irradiated tooth enamel surface will have a temperature gradient that decreases towards the dentin junction. Dependent on irradiant conditions, the temperature may range from greater than 1400 degrees C at the surfac

Dissolution studies of human enamel treated with aluminum solutions.

Dissolution tests using human enamel were conducted after treatment with aqueous solutions of various aluminum (Al) salts. All Al compounds, except those which formed stable Al-complexes, greatly decreased enamel dissolution in a pH 4 acetate buffer. A comparison with fluoride compounds demonstrated that Al was equivalent to SnF2 and more effective than NaF and Na2PO3F. Furthermore, the reduction in enamel dissolution produced by Al persisted after more than three hr of successive demineralization, which was twice as long as that observed with a pH 4.5 SnF2 solution.

Comparison of effects of diode laser and CO2 laser on human teeth and their usefulness in topical fluoridation.

Various authors have reported more effective fluoridation from the use of lasers combined with topical fluoride than from conventional topical fluoridation. Besides the beneficial effect of lasers in reducing the acid solubility of an enamel surface, they can also increase the uptake of fluoride. The study objectives were to compare the action of CO(2) and GaAlAs diode lasers on dental enamel and their effects on pulp temperature and enamel fluoride uptake. Different groups of selected enamel surfaces were treated with amine fluoride and irradiated with CO(2) laser at an energy power of 1 or 2

[Effect of a mineralizing solution (Minersol) on acid solubility resistance of enamel].

Degree of mineralization of enamel is one of the parameters mediating in its resistance to acid dissolution and at the stage of teething, the enamel is immature and, therefore, present a higher susceptibility to dental caries. This investigation was carried out with 38 preschool children (means = 5.5 years) and 19 children coursing second grade (means = 7.6 years). They were treated with 10 oral rinsing with mineralizing solution in order to evaluate its effect on enamel resistance to acid dissolution; colorimetric technique was used for such purpose. Nanotechnology-based therapies for the prevention and treatment of Streptococcus mutans-derived dental caries.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries results from long-term acid production when sugar is metabolized by a bacterial biofilm, resulting in a loss of calcium and phosphate from the enamel. Streptococcus mutans is a type of acid-producing bacteria and a virulent contributor to oral biofilms. Conventional treatment options, such as cefazolin and ampicillin, have significant levels of bacterial resistance. Other topical agents, such as fluoride, tend to be washed away by saliva, resulting in low therapeutic efficacy. HIGHLIGHT: This review aims to highlight the solubility issues that plague poorly water-sol

The resistance of titanium tetrafluoride-treated human enamel to strong hydrochloric acid.

The acid resistance of TiF4-treated enamel was investigated to establish a possible treatment modality for endogenous dental erosion. Enamel slabs were prepared from human molars and treated with solutions of TiF4. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microhardness testing were used to examine the effects of the exposure of the treated enamel to strong acid. SEM micrographs showed the presence of heavy deposits on enamel surfaces. The surface coating, formed following TiF4 application, appeared to be resistant to severe acid attacks. Microhardness measurements showed that TiF4 treatment inhi

Salivary factors in vomiting bulimics with and without pathological tooth wear.

The increased occurrence of dental erosion from self-induced vomiting in bulimia nervosa is not linearly associated with the frequency or the duration of vomiting. Possible changes in the buffering and lubricating role of saliva in bulimia nervosa and their relationship to erosion have not been previously investigated. Chewing-gum-stimulated salivary flow rate, pH, bicarbonate concentration and viscosity were compared between two groups of vomiting bulimics and with 10 healthy controls. One bulimic group (n = 9) had pathological tooth wear present according to the criteria of the Tooth Wear In

Demineralization and remineralization of dental enamel.

Experimentation in vitro using organic acid buffers as demineralizing media shows that caries-like lesions can be obtained which are very similar in morphology and developmental stages to early lesions formed naturally under oral conditions. The use of these chemical systems and of mechanistic models advanced to explain the unique histological features of incipient caries have yielded a good understanding of the processes involved in caries formation. The study of natural and induced factors influencing the demineralization process has been greatly facilitated by the use of bacteriological sys

Contribution to the physicochemical rationale for the caries reducing effect of fluoride.

The effect of fluoride on the stability of apatites containing Na+ and CO3(2)- ions is described qualitatively. Also the boundaries of the apatite stability field in the quasi-septary system CaO - P2O5 - H2O - Na2O - CO2 - NaF - MX are presented. At these boundaries brushite (or monetite), octocalciumphosphate, calcite and calcium fluoride can become stable solid phases. As a consequence, certain mechanisms for the caries reducing effect of fluoride gain probability over other proposed mechanisms. First, it is likely that endemic fluoride yields more fully mineralized enamel which in turn resu
