Impact of oral mucosal conditions on oral health-related quality of life in preschool children: a hierarchical approach.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of oral mucosal conditions on OHRQoL in preschool children. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a selected representative sample of 724 children aged 2-5 years and their parents/caregivers. Data were collected through interviews with parents/caregivers, who also answered the B-ECOHIS. A clinical oral examination was performed to determine oral mucosal conditions, dental caries, dental trauma, and malocclusion. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, the Mann-Whitney U-test and hierarchically adj

An uncommon cause for a non-healing cutaneous fistula in the parotid gland area - A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Orocutaneous fistulae of dental origin are uncommon but well documented in the literature. This condition is often misdiagnosed because of the multiplicity of manifestations and the atypically presentation of the condition. Dental symptoms are rare. This makes diagnosis and treatment a challenging process. PRESENTATION OF A CASE: A 67-year-old patient presented in the emergency room with an abscess in the parotid area. After incision and drainage the patient developed a non-healing fistula in the region of the parotid. Multiple treatment attempts and several investigations did n

Unmet Dental Needs in Children Following Suspension of School-Based Oral Health Services Due to COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries (tooth decay) is the world's most prevalent noncommunicable disease and can lead to pain, infection, and edentulism. Many children with caries lack access to traditional dental services. School-based caries prevention can increase access to care and reduce health inequities. Disruptions in school-based care due to pandemic control policies may result in children losing access to their primary dental care option. METHODS: The CariedAway project was a school-based caries prevention program in operation from 2019 to 2023 in urban schools with a high proportion of low-in

Dental infection simulating skin lesion.

Orocutaneous fistulas or cutaneous sinus, a tract of dental origin, is an uncommon but well-documented condition that usually requires emergency treatment. Such condition may be misdiagnosed by physicians and dentists and may sometimes be confused with bone and skin tumor, osteomyelitis, congenital fistula, salivary gland fistula, pyogenic granuloma, infected cyst, deep mycotic infection, and other pathologies. A case of facial sinus tract that was initially misdiagnosed by a physician as a nonodontogenic lesion is presented. Nonsurgical endodontic therapy was the treatment of choice for this

Treatment of oromaxillary fistulae in nine standing horses (2002-2006).

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: There is minimal published information on equine oromaxillary fistulae that are unrelated to cheek teeth (CT) repulsion or on the conservative treatment of these atypical fistulae. OBJECTIVES: To report equine oromaxillary fistulae unrelated to CT extraction and describe their management in standing horses. METHODS: Case details of oromaxillary fistulae of atypical aetiology occurring at 2 referral centres between 2002-2006, including their treatment and response to treatment were examined. RESULTS: Nine cases of oromaxillary fistula were recorded, mainly in ag

Cutaneous sinus of dental origin: a diagnosis requiring clinical and radiologic correlation.

Cutaneous sinuses may arise from chronic dental infections. These sinus tracts usually appear as suppurative lesions of the chin or neck. Diagnosis is made by palpating the lesion and by radiologic examination demonstrating periapical dental abscess. Treatment with dental extraction or root canal results in resorption of the inflammatory fistula. Since many patients with sinus tracts of dental origin do not have any complaints of tooth or mouth pain, the correct diagnosis may be overlooked by the unsuspecting clinician.

Epidemiology of Odontogenic Sinusitis.

Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is more common than historically thought, representing 25% to 40% of all maxillary sinusitis. Due to a lack of widely accepted diagnostic criteria and a specific international diagnostic code, a true overall prevalence is unknown. ODS may be caused by either a multitude of infectious dental pathologies or complications after dental procedures. The most common dental etiologies causing ODS are apical periodontitis (endodontic) and oroantral communication or fistula after dental extraction. Less commonly, ODS can evolve after dental implant or maxillary sinus bone gra

Foreign Bodies in Sinonasal Tissues: A Potential Pitfall yet a Hint to Oroantral Fistulas.

Foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus are infrequent findings with various organic and inorganic materials have been reported. Most are iatrogenic due to abnormal communications between the oral cavity and the sinus cavity, predominantly secondary to dental and oral procedures. Oroantral fistulas might be asymptomatic incidental findings or may present with sinusitis-related symptoms. Even though oroantral fistulas are frequently encountered iatrogenic complications, most studies focused on radiologic findings and surgical closure procedures. A few cases reported the histopathologic findings o

Chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with an unusual foreign body: a case report.

Foreign bodies in maxillary sinuses are unusual clinical conditions, and they can cause chronic sinusitis by mucosal irritation. Most cases of foreign bodies in maxillary sinus are related to iatrogenic dental manipulation and only a few cases with non-dental origin are reported. Oroantral fistulas secondary to dental procedures are the most common way of insertion. Treatment is surgical removal of the foreign body either endoscopically or with a combined approach, with Caldwell-Luc procedure if endoscopic approach is inadequate for visualisation. In this case, we present a 24-year-old male pa

Orocutaneous fistulas of odontogenic origin presenting as a recurrent pyogenic granuloma.

Orocutaneous fistulas, or cutaneous sinuses of odontogenic origin, are uncommon but often misdiagnosed as skin lesions unrelated to dental origin by physicians. Accurate diagnosis and use of correct investigative modalities are important because orocutaneous fistulas are easily confused for skin or bone tumors, osteomyelitis, infected cysts, salivary gland fistulas, and other pathologies. The aim of this study is to present our experience with a patient with orocutaneous fistulas of odontogenic origin presenting as recurrent pyogenic granuloma of the cheek, and to discuss their successful trea

[The use of Dental D (polyacetal resin) as an alternative for chrome-cobalt removable partial denture: a case report].

Polyacetal resin (Delrin) is well known material in many medical fields as for artificial heart valves and artificial hip joints. In dentistry the material is known as Dental D, and among its other applications, is used for removable partial dentures. The article presents a cleft lip and palate patient with missing teeth (12 and 22). The patient underwent on operations for closure of the cleft, but even so some sinus tracts from the nasal cavity to the soft and hard palate exist. The patient was rehabilitated 10 years ago with chrome-cobalt removable partial denture, but lately, episodes of sw

Bilateral Orocutaneous Fistula Secondary to Pericoronal Infection of Mandibular Third Molars: A Rare Case Report.

Odontogenic cutaneous fistulas are abnormal connections between the oral cavity and skin, often mistaken for skin infections. They typically result from dental infections but may also arise from salivary gland issues, tumors, or congenital anomalies. Accurate diagnosis is essential to prevent complications like infection, osteomyelitis, and discomfort. A 26-year-old woman presented with bilateral facial lesions and itching for the past year. Her symptoms began 5 years earlier with cheek pain and swelling, initially treated with antibiotics. Examination revealed pericoronitis of the mandibular

Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Management of Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) represent a multifaceted congenital deformity encompassing skeletal, dental, and functional discrepancies. This case report presents the management of a 13-year-old female with bilateral CLP, focusing on the challenges associated with permanent dentition and retained deciduous teeth. The patient's history included prior lip and palate repair surgeries, leading to poor aesthetics and functional concerns. A multidisciplinary approach involving orthodontics, oral surgery, and prosthodontics was implemented. Clinical examinations revealed dental abnormalities, oro-nasal

[Facial skin fistula as a postoperative complication of a mandibular guided bone regeneration].

Bone resorption is a consequence of the loss of a tooth. Alveolar ridge resorption can restrict the volume of bone available for the positioning of a dental implant. Bone graft is a routinely performed procedure in order to increase this volume and provide an adequate situation for the replacement of the tooth. However, autogenous bone is the gold standard for this procedure, xenogenous bone is a good alternative. It presents reliable results and a low complication rate. In this article, we describe the case of an infection resulting in a facial skin fistula following a guided bone regeneratio

Curved Planar Reformation: A Useful Method for Screening Dental Pathologies in Chronic Rhinosinusitis via Paranasal Sinus Computed Tomography.

(1) Background: Curved planar reformation (CPR) is a multiplanar reformatting technique of computed tomography (CT) commonly used during dental cone-beam CT (CBCT) to generate panorex-like images for dental evaluation. Here, we evaluated the utility of an additional CPR sequence in detecting dental pathologies in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). (2) Methods: CRS patients who underwent paranasal sinus CT were enrolled retrospectively. The CT images featured three orthogonal sequences and a reconstructed CPR sequence. Additional dental CBCT was performed in patients with pathologies w

Successful Treatment of a Persistent Oroantral Fistula via Transbuccal and Transnasal Endoscopic Debridement in a Horse.

We report an unusual case of a young Quarter Horse with a large dental fracture fragment displaced into the maxillary sinus, leaving an oroantral communication that caused food impaction and metaplastic calcification in the sinus and facial deformation with cutaneous fistulation. Oral extraction of a remaining tooth fragment from its alveolus was succeeded by a maxillary sinusotomy for removal of the abnormal sinus contents. Since the oroantral fistula did not heal spontaneously following the placement of a silicone dental prosthesis, minimally invasive transbuccal and transnasal endoscopic ap

Self-Curing Glass Ionomer Cement Covered by Photopolymerizable Adhesive for Protection of Mucoperiosteal or Gingival Flap Sutures in Canine Oral Surgery.

Periodontal disease is one of the main affections of the oral cavity of dogs. Its main complication is the formation of periapical abscess, which, when affecting the maxillary canine teeth, can lead to the formation of oronasal fistulae. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of self-curing glass ionomer cement, covered by photopolymerizable adhesive, as a protective element for mucoperiosteal or gingival flap sutures in oral surgery of dogs. We studied 15 dogs from the clinical routine of the dental service of a teaching veterinary hospital, which needed oral surgeries to
