Evaluating the Feasibility of Short Dental Implants as Alternatives to Long Dental Implants in Mandibular Bone: A Finite Element Study.

This study uses finite element analysis to investigate the potential application of shorter dental implants as a substitute for longer implants in the lower jaw (mandible). FEA allows the evaluation of the stress patterns around the implant-bone interface, a critical factor for successful osseointegration. Ten models were generated, encompassing five long (L1-L5) and five short implant models (S1-S5) with variations in diameter and length. Hypermesh software was utilized to meticulously prepare the FEA models, ensuring accurate mesh generation. The FEA simulations were conducted under four dis

Accuracy of an autonomous dental implant robotic system in dental implant surgery.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Autonomous dental implant robot systems (ADIRSs) have been marketed for dental implant surgery; however, research on their accuracy is limited. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to examine the accuracy of an ADIRS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-four participants with partial edentulism underwent implant surgery by using the ADIRS. Before surgery, a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan was conducted, and its image data were fed into the ADIRS navigation and positioning system for iterative reconstruction and surgical path planning. After local anesthes

Dental implants and forensic identification: A systematic review.

The use of dental implants has witnessed great popularity in recent years. It has been documented that dental implants are valuable aids in forensic identification. In particular, in the event of mass disasters, where distortion of body features may render the process of forensic identification challenging. The present review aims to explore the application of the use of dental implants in forensic identification. A literature search was performed on PubMed and Web of Science electronic databases. All studies addressing the application of dental implants for forensic identification published i

Dental implants in growing patients: a systematic review.

The aim of this systematic review (for which we followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines) was to provide an overview of the protocols and clinical outcomes of dental implants placed in growing jaws. We searched the MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Science Direct databases in October and November, 2017. A total of 3492 studies were identified, and all the studies reporting the outcomes of dental implants placed during the growth phase were included in the study. After duplicates had been removed, 2133 studies were screened based on their titl

Management of mandibular nerve injuries from dental implants.

Treatment of the patient who has sustained a nerve injury from dental implant procedures involves prompt recognition of this complication, evaluation of sensory dysfunction, the position of the nerve vis-à-vis the implant, and timely management of the injured nerve. In some patients, removal or repositioning of the implant and surgical exploration and repair of the injured nerve will maximize the implant patient's potential for a successful recovery from nerve injury.

Breast metastasis around dental implants: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the oral cavity and to the jaws are rare; hence, the clinical manifestations of the oral metastasis lesion could frequently be simulating general pathologic entities, making the diagnosis a challenging process to the dental team. Local factors, such as trauma, have been observed to facilitate the growth of blood-borne tumors. To this end, surgical procedures such as fixture placement might cause cancer cells to spread. PURPOSE: Careful clinical examination is a valuable help in diagnosing oral lesions, which can improve the quality of life of patients and reduce the

Alveolar distraction osteogenesis before placement of dental implants.

Distraction osteogenesis of the edentulous alveolar ridges may be considered an alternative to many other augmentation oriented surgical techniques. It is now being widely used for treating severe forms of alveolar ridge atrophy, especially before the placement of dental implants. Leibinger Endosseous Alveolar Distraction System (LEAD; Stryker Leibinger, Kalamazoo, MI) is an intraosseous distraction device used for edentulous ridges. In this study, the healing was uneventful in all 5 cases that were treated except 1, in which the vitality of the distraction segment could not be maintained. No

Dental treatment and orthopedic implants--a malpractice case.

A patient who required a revision of a six-year-old hip prosthesis five months following root canal therapy and removal of a root tip subsequently sued his dentist for malpractice. The alleged torts were the presence of a positive culture for lactobacillus--presumably an "oral organism" from the infected hip site one week following the dental procedures--and improper use of antibiotics by the dentist. This case underscores the need for the medical and dental communities to agree on what constitutes proper treatment for dental infections. In addition, the arbitrary use of antibiotics, which has

Peripheral giant cell granuloma associated with dental implants.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a well-circumscribed lesion confined to the alveolar and gingival mucosa. PGCG is considered a reactive lesion caused by local irritation or trauma. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the incidence of PGCG in peri-implant lesions submitted for histologic examination, to establish its correlation with implant failure, and to discuss its pathogenesis. METHODS: The study was conducted on 25 periimplant biopsy specimens submitted for histological examination between 1999 and 2001. Sections (5 microm) of paraffin embedded tiss

Esthetic soft-tissue augmentation adjacent to dental implants.

Patients and clinicians are becoming increasingly aware of the need to improve dental esthetics. After tooth extraction or trauma, there may be residual hard- or soft-tissue defects. These may be related to deficits in the bone or soft tissue. The evaluation of preoperative study casts, radiographs, and photographic documentation can aid the clinician in determining which types of augmentation are necessary. If adequate bone volume is present, the implants are placed according to protocol. Soft-tissue defects can be significantly reduced by implanting various biomaterials between the inner bor

The soft tissue response to osseointegrated dental implants.

The use of dental implants in the treatment of fully edentulous patients has become an important addition in oral/dental rehabilitation. The fact that these implants penetrate the oral mucosa can lead to the assumption that peri-implant tissues, similar to the periodontal tissues, are fulfilling an important function as a barrier to protect the bony anchorage underneath. It has been shown that insufficient plaque removal may lead to peri-implant tissue disease with bone loss similar to teeth. However, it is unclear how important this cause is as a source of implant failure compared with other

Histopathologic observation of seven removed endosseous dental implants.

Seven failed endosseous dental implants that were removed from humans were examined histologically. Results suggest that the hollow-basket portion or the vent should be located as far from the gingiva as possible, and that an adequate healing period is needed for implant placement following tooth extraction. In addition, findings also suggest that the hollow-basket implant is not suitable for a healing socket, that periodic inspection is necessary for two-stage implants to evaluate adaptation of the embedded junction between the abutment and implant in the gingiva, and that there is risk of co

Applications of guided tissue regeneration with dental implants.

This article has discussed and illustrated various applications of GTR associated with dental implants. At present, in the opinion of this author, the material of choice for these procedures is GTAM. Other barriers are currently available while still more are under development. It is not within the scope of this article to include a comprehensive discussion of all available materials but it is noteworthy that resorbable membranes such as GUIDOR (Butler) show promise. At present the predictability of the various GTAM techniques discussed in this article, in the experience of the author are as f

Antibacterial coatings for dental implants: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the high survival rates of dental implants, peri-implantitis is a prevalent complication. Peri-implantitis is related to biofilm that adheres to the surface of implants and causes peri-implant chronic inflammation and bone destruction. Different surface treatments have been proposed to prevent biofilm formation. The objective of this systematic review was analyzing different types of antimicrobial coatings and identifying the most effective one(s) to control bacterial colonization over extended periods of analysis. DATA, SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: We performed a bibliogr
