Experimental Evaluation of Aerosol Production after Dental Ultrasonic Instrumentation: An Analysis on Fine Particulate Matter Perturbation.

Aerosol production represents a major concern during the majority of dental procedures. The aim of the present study is to investigate the dynamics of aerosol particles after 15 min of continuous supragingival ultrasonic instrumentation with no attempt of containment through particle count analysis. Eight volunteers were treated with supragingival ultrasonic instrumentation of the anterior buccal region. A gravimetric impactor was positioned 1 m away and at the same height of the head of the patient. Particles of different sizes (0.3-10 µm) were measured at the beginning of instrumentation, at

Dental Instrumentation Leading to Multivalvular Vegetation Endocarditis in an Otherwise Healthy Immunocompetent Patient Requiring Double Valve Replacement.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a severe condition associated with significant morbidity and mortality, often caused by bacterial seeding. Dental procedures are a well-known and well-documented risk factor for this disease. The authors present a case involving an otherwise healthy 58-year-old male with no cardiac risk factors who developed IE following a dental crown preparation. The patient's dental-induced IE could not be managed medically due to bacterial abscess formation in the mitral and aortic valves. As a result, he developed both mitral and aortic valvopathies, characterized by mild mi

The clinical application of the dental mini C-arm for the removal of broken instruments in soft and hard tissue in the oral and maxillofacial area.

Many kinds of broken instruments, such as needles, probes, scalpels and catheters, are reported to be left in patients after surgery. These parts should be removed as soon as possible to prevent further complications. However, it is not easy to identify the exact location of the instrument intraoperatively, and a risk of damage exists for neighbouring nerves or vessels during the removal. The C-arm used in orthopaedic surgery, is seen as a useful and safe way to detect metal materials intraoperatively. However, its application for removal of broken instruments in the oral and maxillofacial are

Use of an Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Instrument to Measure Unmet Dental Care Needs in Adults With Inherited Bleeding Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Preventive dental care is vital for individuals with bleeding disorders to reduce the need for potentially invasive procedures. Although dental care is a mandated function of U.S. federally supported hemophilia treatment centers (HTCs), access to dental care is widely variable. Lack of both dental insurance and appropriately trained professionals restricts access to services. AIMS: The goals of this study were to estimate prevalence of unmet dental care need in an urban HTC and examine the feasibility of using the Oral Health Inventory Profile (OHIP-14) instrument to screen adul

Determination of the viremia threshold for dental cross-infection in a mouse model.

An animal model of dental virus transmission was developed using the lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDV) of mice to study cross infection. Mouse-to-mouse cross-infection was carried out by scaling the teeth of LDV-infected donor mice with dental instruments, immediately prior to using the contaminated instruments on the teeth of recipient indicator mice. The level of donor viremia was found to correlate with the rate of virus cross-infection, with a viremia threshold level of 10(7.5) ID50/ml observed for dental cross-infection. The blood volume transferred during dental cross-infection
