A Patient Diagnosed with Bulimia Reports to the Dental Office Seeking Cosmetic Dental Work.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a serious psychiatric illness that typically occurs in adolescents and young adults. It is characterized by recurring episodes of consuming large amounts of food with an inappropriate compensatory behavior of purging to prevent weight gain. The purging behavior results in oral manifestations such as dental erosion, dental caries, sialadenosis, and oral mucosal trauma. Medical complications include electrolyte imbalances, esophageal rupture, and renal and cardiovascular failure. Treatment of BN involves psychosocial and psychopharmacologic approaches. Dentists are in a u

The effect of dental training on the reactions of mentally handicapped children's behavior in the dental office.

This study was planned to observe the negative reactions shown by mentally handicapped children during the dental examination and prophylaxis, and to confirm whether there was a difference in these reactions after dental training. Twenty mentally handicapped children (between 6-18 years) were examined by a dentist and their reactions were reported, before dental training was given. Later, a special educator and a dentist trained the children about the dental process. After the training the children were examined and their reactions were reevaluated. The results obtained from the first and the

Oral health care professionals' identification of cardiovascular disease risk among patients in private dental offices in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: The authors conducted a study to investigate whether general private dental practitioners in Sweden could identify patients at risk of experiencing a fatal outcome of cardiovascular disease (CVD) within a set time frame and to what extent those practitioners' findings would result in medical interventions. METHODS: The authors enrolled 200 patients who met the following inclusion criteria: age of 45 years or older; no history of or use of medications for hypertension, hypercholesterolemia or diabetes; and having had no visits to a health care professional during the preceding 12 m

Legionella spp. in a Dental Office-Current State of Knowledge.

Conditions in dental offices are conducive to Legionella pneumophila infections. This is mainly related to the use of a dental unit in the daily clinical work, which is the basic equipment of the office. Water discharged from the dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) and the working tips of the dental unit generates splatter/spatter and bioaerosol, constituting the main sources of potential infection and posing a health threat to both patients and professional dental staff. This article presents a narrative review on the presence and risk associated with Legionella spp., particularly the species L. p

Microbiological Contamination of the Office Environment in Dental and Medical Practice.

The microbiological contamination of the environment in independent healthcare facilities such as dental and general practitioner offices was poorly studied. The aims of this study were to describe qualitatively and quantitatively the bacterial and fungal contamination in these healthcare facilities and to analyze the antibiotic resistance of bacterial pathogens identified. Microbiological samples were taken from the surfaces of waiting, consulting, and sterilization rooms and from the air of waiting room of ten dental and general practitioner offices. Six surface samples were collected in eac

Children's Responses to Sensory Stimuli and their Behavior in the Dental Office.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate children's behavior during dental examinations, their reactions to various selected sensory stimuli and the association between them. STUDY DESIGN: Sixty-three children (28 boys and 35 girls) aged 5-12 years (mean age 7.9 ± 1.6 years) participated in the study. Their parents were asked to complete a questionnaire while in the dentist's waiting room. The dentists evaluated the children's behavior in the dental office using Frankl's behavioral scale and noted the children's reactions to the sensory stimuli of touch, noise, smell and backward tilting of the examination ch

Dental knowledge of accident and emergency senior house officers.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the dental knowledge of accident and emergency (A&E) senior house officers (SHOs). METHOD: A telephone survey of A&E departments in England with more than 30 000 new attendances per year was conducted between November 1998 and July 1999. The questionnaire covered basic dental knowledge as well as scenarios of some common dental problems encountered in the A&E department. RESULTS: Most SHOs in this study saw between one and five dental problems each week. Of the 102 SHOs in this survey, 52% had no previous training in examination of the mouth. Only 52% knew the approx

Infection control in the dental office: has anything changed?

Using data collected in two studies, the authors compare infection control practices used in dental offices in 1988 and 1992. During that time, dentists increased their use of barrier protection but still asked and learned very little about their patients. This lack of communication hinders dentists' ability to deliver the best care possible. The authors recommend that dentists improve communication with their patients to obtain better information about their health status.

Distribution of nontuberculous mycobacteria in dental unit waterlines: A potential health hazard in the dental office.

BACKGROUND: It is essential to control the microbiology of dental unit water lines (DUWs) to prevent the spread of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and associated oral diseases. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify the presence of NTM in the water of 112 DUWs from dental centers and 57 DUWs from individual dental offices in Tehran, Iran. METHODS: A total of 169 water samples were collected from DUWs. After filtration through a 0.45 μm membrane, the samples were decontaminated with 0.005 % cetylpyridinium chloride and then cultured on two Lowenstein-Jensen media, incubated a

Botox and Dermal Fillers: Review and Its Role in the Dental Office.

For the general dentist, the use of BTA and dermal fillers confers the ability to exert control over the soft tissues surrounding the mouth to better create a harmonious smile. The injection of BTA and fillers into the facial musculature and dermis requires a level of finesse to achieve the desired outcomes. A sound understanding of the mechanisms of action and the ability to manage potential complications are also necessary, because the dentist administering BTA and dermal fillers must be competent to the same level as other providers who have traditionally been the gatekeepers of such agents

Primary identification of an abused child in dental office: a case report.

Although the injuries of child abuse are many and varied, several types of injuries are common to abuse. Many of these injuries are within the scope of dentistry or easily observed by the dental professional in the course of routine dental treatment. The authors present a case of child abuse with multiple bruises. The child had been spanked in the previous night and the morning of the attendance by his mother. This case emphasized that all practitioners should be vigilant when patients present with abnormal injuries which may be the result of abuse and further investigation should be instigate

Adolescent tobacco and nicotine prevention: Opportunities missed in the dental office.

BACKGROUND: Despite declining rates of adolescent cigarette smoking, emerging products continue to pose a threat to youth. Oral health care professionals, who often see adolescents more frequently than other clinicians, are uniquely positioned to intervene. METHODS: Data (N = 3,898 survey responses) were analyzed from the 2023 Florida Youth Tobacco Survey, a statewide, school-based assessment of tobacco behaviors. Additional analyses focused on high school students who reported a dental visit in the previous 12 months (n = 2,835). The Rao-Scott χ2 test was used to examine whether the proporti
