INTRODUCTION: Over the past century, the dental literature has consistently reflected a controversy related to the effect of periodontal disease on the dental pulp. Nonetheless, practitioners are of the opinion that teeth having deep periodontal pockets show variable pulpal response, which may necessitate root canal treatment. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the changes in pulp due to advanced periodontal disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty caries-free teeth affected with severe periodontitis were collected from patients aged between 18 and 55 years. The collected teeth were stored in fo

Dental pulp represents a specialized connective tissue enclosed by dentin and enamel, the most highly mineralized tissues of the body. Consequently, the direct examination as well as pathological evaluation of dental pulp is difficult. Within this anatomical context, our study aimed to evaluate the correlation between dental pulp lesions and clinical diagnosis. Pulpectomies were performed for 54 patients with acute and chronic irreversible pulpitides and for 5 patients (control group) with orthodontic extractions. The morphological features were semiquantitatively assessed by specific score va

The study aimed to radiographically assess the characteristics of pulp stones (PS) and pulp canal obliteration (PCO) in teeth and examined their associations with various dental parameters such as caries, restorations, periodontal status, and age. This cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry, King Abdulaziz University between September 2022, and May 2023, involved 101 patients exhibiting 402 teeth with PS or PCO. Data were collected from periapical and bitewing radiographs, and analyzed by two calibrated dentists. Multiple dental parameters were assessed,

AIM: To outline the biological and electrochemical principles supporting impedance-guided localisation of pulp chambers and canal orifices in calcified root canal systems, and to present an accessory concept relating to impedance patterns at the coronal dentine-gutta-percha interface, potentially serving as a surrogate marker of fluid leakage associated with deficient non-conductive root fillings.
SUMMARY: Calcific metamorphosis produces structural alterations that complicate localisation of pulp chambers and canal orifices. Adjunctive modalities such as CBCT, guided endodontics, microscopic

Homeostatic maintenance is essential for pulp function. Disrupting pulp homeostasis may lead to pulp degeneration, such as fibrosis and calcifications. Sensory nerves constitute a crucial component of the dental pulp. However, the precise involvement of sensory nerves in pulp homeostasis remains uncertain. In this study, we observed the short-term and long-term histological changes in the dental pulp after inferior alveolar nerve transection. Additionally, we cultured primary dental pulp cells (DPCs) from the innervated and denervated groups and compared indicators of cellular senescence and c

BACKGROUND: The prominent dental feature of a 10-year-old girl was severely hypoplastic enamel in permanent teeth.
CASE REPORT: Severe dental defects were detected in a 10-year-old female patient affected by pseudoxanthoma elasticum and amelogenesis imperfecta. An orthopantomographic examination revealed a reduction of enamel thickness on the crown of all erupted and unerupted teeth, agenesis of the maxillary right second premolar, delayed eruption of mandibular first premolars, and the presence of large calcifications in all tooth pulp chambers. A detailed histological analysis of permanent

INTRODUCTION: Consensus Conference Subcommittee 2 was charged with the identification and definition of all diagnostic terms for pulpal health and disease states by using a systematic review of the literature.
METHODS: Eight databases were searched, and numerous widely recognized endodontic texts were consulted. For each reference the level of evidence was determined, and the findings were summarized by members of the subcommittee. Highest levels of evidence were always included when available. Areas of inquiry included quantification of pulpal pain, the designation of conditions that can be

Two premolars removed from a 14 year old girl, with suspicion of pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) have been studied, using several of the correlated techniques applied to the study of calcified tissues (light microscopy, microradiography and scanning electron microscopy). Enamel gross and micro hypoplasia, hypomineralization of the enamel surface and dentin hypocalcification were similar to dental abnormalities observed in pseudohypoparathyroidism. Microradiography showed for the first time calcifications present in blood vessels of the dental pulp. Light microscopy and SEM revealed dystrophic g

AIM: In the general economy of the stomatognathic system functionality, the occlusal function has an important role, meaning both the dental-dental reports and the dynamic reports interarch-interarch. Because of the interrelationships and inter-dependency that govern the functioning of the biological systems, a pathological change affecting a component of the stomatognathic system produces impaired functioning of the others. The aim of the present study is to assess the morphological changes occurred in the dental pulp components of teeth affected by occlusal trauma.

It has been previously reported that short term application of calcium-hydroxide to the dental pulp resulted in the formation of a dentin bridge with matrix vesicle calcification. The present study deals with the induction of reparative dentin in rat molar pulps by direct capping with calcium-hydroxide. The teeth were examined after 21 and 35 days. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the calcification process in the newly formed dentin was characterized by apatite deposition in matrix vesicles and the occurrence of calcifying nodules in the matrix. The persistence of these fea

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathologic changes in dental pulp of teeth with chronic advanced periodontitis.
METHODS: In 22 patients, 30 teeth were selected for inclusion. Patients had received no periodontal treatment. No teeth had caries, abrasion, attrition, erosion, trauma, or restoration. Radiographically, all teeth showed bone-support destruction to the apex. Thermal and cavity tests were used to evaluate pulp vitality. After tooth extractions, crowns were separated from roots at the cementoenamel junction. Both the crowns and the roots were prepared for his

This article describes an unusual case of internal resorption in primary molars followed by apposition of calcified deposits. Expanded borders of the coronal pulp chambers of all four first primary molars were first observed on a routine recall examination at age 7 years 7 months. Exposure of the process to the surrounding bone linked the bone to the calcified tissue formed in the pulp and caused ankylosis and infraocclusion of the affected teeth. The internal resorption and remodelling process in this case were of an unknown aetiology. Two possible explanations are suggested: (1) pulp respons

Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine pulp stones which are small calcified formations found in the coronal and/or radicular part of the dental pulp. Pulp stones range considerably in size and shape. Most are round or oval but others can be irregular and may correspond to a reduced duplicate of the pulp chamber anatomy. Both free and attached pulp stones were observed. The surface aspect was variable and frequently exhibited large resorption zones. Three characteristic features were observed on fractures: a) no characteristic organization where the mineralized mass is compact and ho

Tumoral calcinosis (TC) is a rare inherited autosomal dominant metabolic disease manifested by elevated serum phosphorus and 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D levels and periarticular cystic and solid tumorous calcifications. The dental findings in a large family have been critical in determining the genetic transmission of the condition. Radiographically the teeth have short bulbous roots, pulp stones and partial obliteration of the pulp cavity. Histologically, coronal dentin and a variable amount of radicular dentin appears to be deposited regularly. At nonspecific points the developing radicular dent

INTRODUCTION: Pulp stones are radiopaque calcified masses located within the coronal or radicular pulp tissue. They are typically asymptomatic and detected incidentally on radiographic examination. Global prevalence estimates vary widely, and methodological inconsistencies across studies hinder a comprehensive understanding of their epidemiology. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to answer the following question: "What is the global prevalence of pulp stones, and what factors are associated with their occurrence?" Aim: To systematically review and synthesize the evidence on the global pr

INTRODUCTION: S100 proteins convey important roles in innate immune responses to infection and regenerative processes. However, their role in inflammatory or regenerative processes of the human dental pulp is poorly elucidated. The aim of the present study was to detect, localize, and compare the occurrence of 8 S100 proteins in normal, symptomatic, and asymptomatic irreversibly inflamed dental pulp specimens.
METHODS: Human dental pulp specimens from 45 individuals were clinically assigned to 3 groups of pulpal diagnosis: normal pulp (NP, n = 17), asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis (AIP, n =
