The effect of intentionally perforating the floor of the pulp chamber on pulpal healing after tooth replantation in mice.

OBJECTIVES: Shortening the root of a mouse molar prior to tooth replantation results in early revascularization in the pulp cavity and activation of the dental pulp quiescent stem cells. This study aimed to validate the effects of pulp chamber floor perforation on pulpal healing after tooth replantation as a strategy to promote early revascularization into the pulp. METHODS: The maxillary first molars of three-week-old Crlj:CD1 mice were extracted and repositioned into the original socket: the left teeth were immediately replanted (control group: CG), whereas the floor of the pulp chamber of

Effect of bacterial products on inflammatory reactions in the dental pulp.

Culture filtrates (extracellular components) and material obtained from disintegrated cells (intracellular components) of cultured plaque bacteria were studied for their capacity to induce inflammatory reactions in the dental pulp. Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of 94 teeth: 42 test and 52 control teeth in six adult monkeys. lyophilized bacterial components were sealed into the test cavities either alone or following an 8-h topical application of a solution of the same components in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). Culture medium and PBS were applied in two sets of contro

Dental histology in familial expansile osteolysis.

The dental histopathology is described of patients suffering from Familial Expansile Osteolysis (FEO), a rare and unique autosomal dominant disease which has severe bony as well as dental consequences. The predominant dental features are resorption of the cervical and apical regions of the roots, premature depositions both of irregular secondary dentin, which causes narrowing of the pulp cavities, and of cellular cementum, which causes patchy narrowing of the periodontal ligament. The dental pulp shows age-like changes, including multiple pulp stones and the ligament vasculature appears to be

Self-etching adhesives: possible new pulp capping agents to vital pulp therapy.

Pulp capping is one of the solving for keeping vital pulp in the case of dentin caries, reversible pulpitis or traumatic pulp exposure. The presence of bacteria on the cavity walls or in the pulp was the major factor that leads to the failure of pulp capping. Traditional pulp capping agent, calcium hydroxide, may not prevent microleakage. Selfetching system is a newly developed adhesive system, which could provide less microleakage and would not break down or dissolve, preventing the oral fluids and bacteria from the pulp along the cavity wall. This may reduce such clinical problems as postope

Impedance-Guided Localisation of Pulp Chambers and Canal Orifices in Calcified Root Canal Systems: Biological Foundations and Conceptual Application.

AIM: To outline the biological and electrochemical principles supporting impedance-guided localisation of pulp chambers and canal orifices in calcified root canal systems, and to present an accessory concept relating to impedance patterns at the coronal dentine-gutta-percha interface, potentially serving as a surrogate marker of fluid leakage associated with deficient non-conductive root fillings. SUMMARY: Calcific metamorphosis produces structural alterations that complicate localisation of pulp chambers and canal orifices. Adjunctive modalities such as CBCT, guided endodontics, microscopic

Ex-vivo and in-vivo validation of a novel measuring protocol for guided endodontics.

OBJECTIVES: To (1) validate the use of a post-operative intraoral scan (IOS) versus Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), gold standard, on its ability to measure the accuracy of guided endodontics, and (2) present clinical data on the accuracy of guided endodontics. METHODS: Four models, including 10 extracted teeth each, were created. Forty guided access cavities were planned on dentin to simulate pulp canal obliteration (PCO). Two operators performed guided access cavities. A post-operative CBCT and IOS were acquired. The coronal, apical, and angular deviations were measured with CBCT and

Microguided Endodontics: a method to achieve minimally invasive access cavity preparation and root canal location in mandibular incisors using a novel computer-guided technique.

AIM: To present a novel miniaturized and minimally invasive treatment approach for root canal localization in mandibular incisors with pulp canal calcification and apical periodontitis. SUMMARY: A 51-year-old male patient presented with pain from his mandibular incisors. The patient had a history of severe dental trauma over 30 years ago. Both mandibular central incisors (teeth 31, 41) were tender to percussion and had a yellowish discoloration. They did not respond to thermal and electrical sensitivity tests. Two periapical radiographs from different projections revealed severe pulp canal ca

Immune System of Dental Pulp in Inflamed and Normal Tissue.

Teeth are vulnerable to structural compromise, primarily attributed to carious lesions, in which microorganisms originating from the oral cavity deteriorate the mineralized structures of enamel and dentin, subsequently infiltrating the underlying soft connective tissue, known as the dental pulp. Nonetheless, dental pulp possesses the necessary capabilities to detect and defend against bacteria and their by-products, using a variety of intricate defense mechanisms. The pulp houses specialized cells known as odontoblasts, which encounter harmful substances produced by oral bacteria. These cells

Occurrence of microorganisms at different levels of the pulp. Contribution to endodontic techniques.

Microorganisms were absent in the remaining pulp stumps of twenty teeth which had been exposed to caries and contaminated at the pulpal chamber level. We have demonstrated that microorganisms are not carried to the deepest areas of the pulp when the basic procedure is strict antisepsis applied to the living pulp stump. A sterile and living pulp stump wound contributes to an adequate biologic sealing of the apical foramen. Of all the isolated microorganisms, the alpha hemolytic Streptococcus was most frequently found in all examined cases, in pure or mixed cultures, demonstrating once again he

Immunohistochemical localization of osteopontin in human pulp stones.

The organic matrix component of human pulp stones was investigated by immunohistochemistry. Two pulp stones were extracted from the upper molar teeth of two patients suffering from irreversible pulpitis. Both were formed in the center of the pulp cavity and located apart from the dentin walls. After demineralization, serial sections of the stones were prepared and subjected to immunohistochemical procedures using specific antibodies to type I collagen and noncollagenous proteins (osteopontin, osteonectin, and osteocalcin), which are reported to be involved in calcified matrix formation. Type I

Pulpal reaction to a dental adhesive in deep human cavities.

In the last years several dental adhesives have been developed. They are supposed to chemically adhere to dentin and a liner to protect the pulp is not used. The aim of this study was to compare the short-term pulpal reaction, in an intra-toothpair study, between a dental adhesive, Scotchbond 2, and a lining system, Tubulitec, in combination with P-50 in surface-sealed cavities. Deep buccal cavities in 16 human pairs of premolars, 32 teeth, were restored in vivo with a light cured composite resin, P-50. To minimize bacterial contamination all cavities were treated with a cleanser, Tubulicid, a

Atraumatic Restorative Treatment: Restorative Component.

Atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) is a method of managing dental caries based on 2 pillars: sealants for preventing carious lesions in pits and fissures, and restorations for cavitated dentine carious lesions. ART uses only hand instruments for opening/enlarging the cavity and for removing carious tissue. The amount of carious tissue that should be removed depends mainly on the cavity depth. In cavities of shallow and medium depth, carious tissue is removed up to firm dentine. In deep/very deep cavities, in which there is no sign of pulp exposure, pulp inflammation and/or history of spont

Electronic root canal length measurement before and after experimentally induced pulpitis and apical periodontitis in dogs.

The aim of the study was to examine the influence of the state of the pulp and apical periodontium on the results of electronic root canal length measurement (ERCLM) with a resistance measuring device in dogs. Pulpitis and apical periodontitis were induced by pulp exposure and contamination by the oral flora in the premolar teeth of six mongrel dogs, comprising four experimental groups (36 root canals). In a control group, measured lengths of teeth with uninfected pulps were performed on the first experimental day (44 root canals). In all animals the ERCLMs were performed on teeth with healthy
