Age-related morphological, histological and functional changes in teeth.

Throughout lifetime, the teeth are continuously exposed to numerous chemical and physical impacts, which cause the wear of the dental hard tissues, gingival recession and other oral changes with sometimes subsequent problems. Age-related wear of tooth surfaces reduces the dental enamel thickness and exposes deeper layers of enamel, which have different physical and chemical properties than the surface enamel. Gingival recession is the main causal factor of root caries and dentine hypersensitivity. Age-related changes in dentine include the formation of secondary dentine and the reduction in tu

Static magnetic field attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in pulp cells by affecting cell membrane stability.

One of the causes of dental pulpitis is lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced inflammatory response. Following pulp tissue inflammation, odontoblasts, dental pulp cells (DPCs), and dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) will activate and repair damaged tissue to maintain homeostasis. However, when LPS infection is too serious, dental repair is impossible and disease may progress to irreversible pulpitis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine whether static magnetic field (SMF) can attenuate inflammatory response of dental pulp cells challenged with LPS. In methodology, dental pulp cells were is

Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoid Modulation of Nociception and Inflammation Associated with a Rat Model of Pulpitis.

Despite advancements in dental pain management, one of the most common reasons for emergency dental care is orofacial pain. Our study aimed to determine the effects of non-psychoactive Cannabis constituents in the treatment of dental pain and related inflammation. We tested the therapeutic potential of two non-psychoactive Cannabis constituents, cannabidiol (CBD) and β-caryophyllene (β-CP), in a rodent model of orofacial pain associated with pulp exposure. Sham or left mandibular molar pulp exposures were performed on Sprague Dawley rats treated with either vehicle, the phytocannabinoid CBD (5

Diagnosis of the condition of the dental pulp: a systematic review.

The aim of this systematic review was to appraise the diagnostic accuracy of signs/symptoms and tests used to determine the condition of the pulp in teeth affected by deep caries, trauma or other types of injury. Radiographic methods were not included. The electronic literature search included the databases PubMed, EMBASE, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Cochrane Reviews from January 1950 to June 2011. The complete search strategy is given in an Appendix S1 (available online as Supporting Information). In addition, hand searches were made. Two reviewers independently ass

The effect of radiation on the response of dental pulp to operative and endodontic procedures: an experimental study.

Thirty-six 56-day-old male Sprague-Dawley albino rats served as two groups of experimental animals. Group 1 was irradiated with 400 rads delivered as total-body radiation from a cesium source. Group 2 served as the control group and was not irradiated. Three weeks later, the dental microscope was used to facilitate various dental procedures in both groups of animals (cavity preparation filled with zinc oxide-eugenol, pulp exposure capped with zinc oxide-eugenol, and pulp exposure left open). Two animals for each procedure from Groups 1 and 2 were killed at time intervals of 2, 4, and 8 weeks.

The Other Side of Endodontics: Vital Pulp Therapy on Mature Permanent Teeth.

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) was once a treatment modality that was only considered for immature permanent teeth to allow for the continued development of the radicular system if the pulp was vital. With the advent of bioceramics and bioactive materials such as calcium silicate cements, the applications for VPT have greatly increased, giving dentists a treatment option other than nonsurgical root canal therapy (RCT) for mature teeth previously diagnosed to have an irreversible pulpitis. This approach can serve as a less invasive, simpler procedure than RCT while allowing for the preservation of na

In Vivo Rodent Models for Studying Dental Caries and Pulp Disease.

Dental caries is an infectious oral disease caused primarily by complex interactions of cariogenic oral flora (biofilm) with dietary carbohydrates on the tooth surface over time. Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus (S. mutans and S. sobrinus) are the most prevalent cariogenic species within the oral biofilm and considered the main etiological agents of caries. Pulp exposure and infection can be caused by trauma, carious lesion, and mechanical reasons. Pulp response to these exposures depends on the state of the pulp as well as the potential bacterial contamination of pulp tissue. H

Partial pulpotomy for carious pulp exposure in adult mature permanent teeth: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Deep carious lesions often lead to pulp exposure, highlighting the need for effective pulp preservation strategies. While root canal treatment was the conventional approach, alternatives like partial pulpotomy (PP) showed high success rates in maintaining pulp vitality. This review aimed to assess the success rates of PP in vital, mature teeth with carious pulp exposure, particularly focusing on adults aged 18 and older, as recent research is limited. METHODS: This systematic review (PROSPERO ID: CRD42024494545) examines the success rate of partial pulpotomy in adult mature perman

Retrospective analysis of factors associated with the success of stepwise excavation procedure in deep carious lesions.

BACKGROUND: Recent scientific evidence regarding the stepwise excavation procedure (SWP) has not addressed the consideration of patient factors when selecting SWP as treatment for deep carious lesions (DCLs). This study assessed patient factors predicting a successful SWP defined as a tooth restored with SWP and did not result in root canal treatment or a dental extraction. METHODS: SWPs completed in 626 patients without symptomatic irreversible pulpitis at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry from January 2004 through December 2012 were evaluated. Patient demographic and tooth-specifi

Wnt3a-Loaded Hydroxyapatite Nanowire@Mesoporous Silica Core-Shell Nanocomposite Promotes the Regeneration of Dentin-Pulp Complex via Angiogenesis, Oxidative Stress Resistance, and Odontogenic Induction of Stem Cells.

Pulp exposure often leads to pulp necrosis, root fractures, and ultimate tooth loss. The repair of the exposure site with pulp capping treatment is of great significance to preserving pulp vitality, but its efficacy is impaired by the low bioactivity of capping materials and cell injuries from the local accumulation of oxidative stress. This study develops a Wnt3a-loaded hydroxyapatite nanowire@mesoporous silica (Wnt3a-HANW@MpSi) core-shell nanocomposite for pulp capping treatments. The ultralong and highly flexible hydroxyapatite nanowires provide the framework for the composites, and the mes
