Twins and the paradox of dental-age estimations: a caution for researchers and clinicians.

The biological age difference among twins is frequently an issue in studies of genetic influence on various dental features, particularly dental development. The timing of dental development is a crucial issue also for many clinicians and researchers. The aim of this study was therefore to verify within groups of twins how dental development differs, by applying Demirjian's method, Mincer's charts of development of third molars and two of Cameriere's methods for dental age estimation, which are among the most popular methods both in the clinical and the forensic scenario. The sample consisted

Stem cell and biomaterials research in dental tissue engineering and regeneration.

This review summarizes approaches used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, with a focus on dental applications. Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common diseases resulting in tissue loss. To replace or regenerate new tissues, various sources of stem cells have been identified such as somatic stem cells from teeth and peridontium. Advances in biomaterial sciences including microfabrication, self-assembled biomimetic peptides, and 3-dimensional printing hold great promise for whole-organ or partial tissue regeneration to replace teeth and periodontium.

Research in dental health education and health promotion: a review of the literature.

This article presents a review of research in dental health education and health promotion. In the period 1982 to 1992, a total of 57 studies evaluating the effectiveness of interventions to alter individuals' behavior related to dental health were identified. Combining the results of these 57 studies with descriptive articles published over the same period, it appears that dental health education can result in improvements in objective measures of dental health behaviors and actual oral health measures, but has only limited success in changing attitudes towards dental issues and achieves only

[Research progress of dental implant in patients with oral lichen planus].

In recent years, the range of indications for dental implants has undergone many modifications and has been widened. In the past, oral lichen planus was regarded as contraindication for the placement of implants. According to recent literature, some patients with oral lichen planus have been selected for dental implantology, indicating comparable implant survival rate to patients without oral lichen planus. Nevertheless, clinical information on this topic is still scarce and evidence-based treatment guidelines are not available. This paper reviews the research progress of dental implant in pat

[Research progress in taste G protein-coupled receptors and dental caries].

Recent studies have demonstrated that the functions of taste G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) extend far beyond gustation. These receptors are widely distributed in oral tissues, participating in local immune regulation and maintenance of oral microbial homeostasis. As chemosensory receptors, taste GPCR modulate individual sensitivity to sweet and bitter stimuli, thereby influencing dietary preference, sugar intake, and susceptibility to dental caries. In addition, they play crucial roles in microbial signal recognition and the preservation of ecological balance within the oral cavity. Downre

Biomineralization in dental research: mechanisms, clinical implications, and emerging microbial strategies.

Biomineralization, the biologically controlled formation of minerals by living organisms, is central to the development, maintenance, and repair of dental hard tissues. This perspective summarizes the current understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing enamel and dentin mineralization, with particular emphasis on the regulatory roles of amelogenins, enamel matrix proteins, dentin matrix proteins, and non-collagenous phosphoproteins. The clinical implications for dental caries, periodontal bone loss, and dentin hypersensitivity are critically evaluated in the context of bio

The miniature pig: a useful large animal model for dental and orofacial research.

Compared with small animal models such as rodents, large animal models are superior in many aspects for the study of human diseases and pre-clinical therapies. Since the development of the Minnesota miniature pig in 1949 at the Hormel Institute (USA), miniature pigs have been used as a large animal model in medical studies for scientific, economic, and ethical reasons. The oral maxillofacial region of miniature pigs is similar to that of humans in anatomy, development, physiology, pathophysiology, and disease occurrence. In this review, we describe the anatomical characteristics of the oral ma

Research in general dental practice--what is involved? Part 2. Specific considerations.

In the previous paper (Part 1. General Considerations), the problems which GDPs are likely to encounter when they embark on research were explored and an outline of the structure a GDP might use when planning to undertake a research project outlined. This paper explains how a recent mouthrinse study, carried out by five GDPs in five different practices, was planned and executed and how the principles described in the first paper were applied.

CBCT in Dental Research: Is Complexity Necessary? An Exploratory Proof-of-Concept Study.

This exploratory proof-of-concept study aimed to develop and preliminarily evaluate a 3D-printed holder designed for reuse in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in dental research, particularly for comparative studies requiring pre- and post-intervention tooth assessment. The holder was designed using computer-aided design software and fabricated from polylactic acid using 3D printing. A conventional alginate-based holder was used for comparison. The comparison therefore concerned two complete positioning systems with different geometries and modes of adaptation to the CBCT headrest. The two

Medicinal Plants Against Dental Caries: Research and Application of Their Antibacterial Properties.

Dental caries remains one of the most widespread global health concerns, significantly affecting both oral and overall health. Conventional treatments typically rely on chemical-based products which, although effective, are often associated with undesirable side effects such as tooth staining, altered taste, and the development of antimicrobial resistance. As a response, plant-based natural alternatives have gained attention as promising strategies for the prevention and management of dental caries. This review highlights the antibacterial properties of medicinal plants and their potential app
