The radiological and histological investigation of the dental follicle of asymptomatic impacted mandibular third molars.

OBJECTIVES: The indication for removal of asymptomatic fully impacted third molars is still controversial. In this study, radiological and histological investigation of the dental follicle of asymptomatic impacted mandibular third molars was performed, aiming to provide a reference for clinical prophylactic extraction of these teeth. METHODS: Patients with impacted mandibular third molars were included and the maximum width of the dental follicle around the crown was measured in horizontal, sagittal and coronal sections by cone beam computed tomography. The dental follicles were stained with

[Research progress on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of tooth eruption].

Tooth eruption is a series of complicated physiological processes occurring once the crown is formed completely, as well as when the tooth moves toward the occasion plane. As such, the tooth moves through the alveolar bone and the oral mucosa until it finally reaches its functional position. Most studies indicate that the process of tooth eruption involves the alveolar bone, dental follicles, osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and multiple cytokines. Dental follicles regulate both resorption and formation of the alveolar bone, which is required for tooth eruption. Furthermore, root formation with perio

Why canines induce resorption of neighboring roots? An imaging correlation.

Despite the explanations about the mechanisms and reasons why dental follicles of unerupted maxillary canines do not cause root resorption in neighboring teeth, questions remain about the time expected for this event and the lack of protocols for preventive clinical management, which may serve as insights for further studies. Here, these mechanisms are correlated with imaging findings of CT scans and 3D reconstructions of a typical clinical case.

[Gene expression of latent TGF-β binding protein-3 in the follicle of mouse first mandibular molar in mice].

PURPOSE: To observe and analyze the gene expression of latent TGF-β binding protein-3(LTBP-3) in mice first mandibular molars during tooth eruption period. METHODS: The first mandibular molar germs of KM mice, from postnatal 1.5 to 9.5 days, were dissected. Anatomical microscope was used to observe and separate dental follicles of each time-point. After total RNA extracted from separated dental follicles of the first mandibular molars, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed using LTBP-3 specific primers to detect its gene expression. Then densitometry analysis

Mucopolysaccharidosis: MPS VI and associated delayed tooth eruption.

Eight cases of mucopolysaccharidosis Type VI (Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome) are reviewed and two cases are presented in detail. Developmental dental anomalies including unerupted and impacted permanent teeth and associated hyperplastic tooth follicles are seen frequently in MPS patients. The surgical implications and management are discussed. All patients reviewed had significant cardiovalvular disease. It is essential for the primary medical provider to establish early basic dental care and evaluation for delayed eruption of primary and permanent dentition. This will probably minimize the possibil

Ultrastructural features of the dental follicle associated with formation of the tooth eruption pathway in the dog.

The dental follicle is a loose connective tissue layer that surrounds the developing and erupting tooth. The follicle is necessary for tooth eruption in dogs and specific cellular changes occur in the follicle at the onset of tooth eruption. In particular, within the coronal region of the follicle next to areas of subsequent bone resorption there is an increase in mononuclear cells which have the ultrastructure features of monocytes and contain specific granules characteristic of preosteoclasts. The follicle has an extensive microvasculature and monocytes are often seen adjacent to capillaries

Enamel dysplasia with hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia: review of the literature and report of a case.

This article documents an additional case of a rare syndrome, reported only in black persons in South Africa. It is characterised by hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia with central odontogenic fibroma (WHO-type)-like features attached to multiple impacted teeth, and with generalized enamel dysplasia showing features of hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta. Other features associated with the syndrome, but not present in all reported cases, include open-bite malocclusion, gingival overgrowth, hypodontia, pulpal calcifications and aberrant root formation of the unerupted teeth. Our pres

An autoradiographic study of periodontal development in the mouse.

Tritiated thymidine was injected into 10- and 13-day-old mice because at this age the third molar is at the appropriate stage of development. At set intervals, the mice were killed and the distribution of labeled cells within the dental papilla and follicle examined. The change in labeling index with time was measured for defined areas in the papilla and follicle. It was shown that, during the late bell stage of development, cells moved from the papilla into the follicle. It was concluded that the pulp, rather than the investing layer of the follicle, is the source of the periodontium and that

Localization of epidermal growth factor and its receptor in mandibular molars of the rat prior to and during prefunctional tooth eruption.

Immunoperoxidase localization of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) itself was examined in rat first and second mandibular molars postnatally from day 0 to 12. The results showed that the dental follicle stained heavily for EGFR from day 0 to 8, declined in staining at day 9, and was devoid of stain from day 10 onward. Preosteoblasts and osteoblasts of alveolar bone also stained and lesser staining of ameloblasts and odontoblasts was observed. Except for staining of occasional isolated cells, the stellate reticulum did not stain. Light staining of the de

Stem Cells Derived from Dental Tissues.

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells located in different parts of the body. The major role of stem cells is to restore of injured tissues. Since the discover of stem cells, they gained a big attention due to their differentiation and regeneration capacity. The main source of stem cells was known as bone marrow. However, different sources for obtaining stem cells were discovered. Dental tissues, a new source for stem cells, provide cells having mesenchymal stem cell characteristics such as fibroblast-like structure, expression of surface antigens specific for mesenchymal stem cells, regenerat

Mechanisms during Osteogenic Differentiation in Human Dental Follicle Cells.

Human dental follicle cells (DFCs) as periodontal progenitor cells are used for studies and research in regenerative medicine and not only in dentistry. Even if innovative regenerative therapies in medicine are often considered the main research area for dental stem cells, these cells are also very useful in basic research and here, for example, for the elucidation of molecular processes in the differentiation into mineralizing cells. This article summarizes the molecular mechanisms driving osteogenic differentiation of DFCs. The positive feedback loop of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) 2 and

Regional control by the dental follicle of alterations in alveolar bone metabolism during tooth eruption.

Tooth eruption is a localized, bilaterally symmetrical series of events which involves resorption and formation of alveolar bone on opposite sides of the tooth and requires the presence of the dental follicle. We examined the effect on eruption of selective surgical removal of parts of the follicle. Removal of either the basal or coronal halves of the follicle prevented eruption. Bone resorption and formation of an eruption pathway did not occur after removal of the coronal part of the follicle and bone formation did not occur after removal of the basal part of the follicle. Exposure and incis

Intramural calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor.

The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare lesion of the jaws. It accounts for about 1% of all odontogenic tumors. The CEOT occurs primarily in the molar-premolar region of the mandible, and 52% of cases are associated with an unerupted tooth. This report describes an unusual case in a 37-year-old woman. The tumor arose in the molar area of the right mandible, appeared radiographically as a radiolucent lesion, and was thought to be a dentigerous cyst in association with an impacted first molar. The lesion was enucleated. Microscopic examination showed it to be a dental sac, w…

Detection of the gubernacular canal and its attachment to the dental follicle may indicate an abnormal eruption status.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the detection of gubernacular canals (GC) and their characteristics in normal and abnormal tooth eruption. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with unerupted teeth were classified according to sex and age. Each tooth was classified according to dental group, eruption status, formation status, angulation, and GC detection. The opening of the GC in the alveolar crest and the attachment sites in relation to the dental follicle were assessed. Data were analyzed by the chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: Cone-beam computed

Comparison of neurosphere-like cell clusters derived from dental follicle precursor cells and retinal Müller cells.

Unrelated cells such as dental follicle precursor cells (DFPCs) and retinal Müller cells (MCs) make spheres after cultivation in serum-replacement medium (SRM). Until today, the relation and molecular processes of sphere formation from different cell types remain undescribed. Thus in this study we compared proteomes of spheres derived from MCs and DFPCs. 73% of 676 identified proteins were similar expressed in both cell types and many of them are expressed in the brain (55%). Moreover proteins are overrepresented that are associated with pathways for neural diseases such as Huntington disease

Injury to developing canines as a complication of intranasal antrostomy. Report of a case.

A case is presented in which a 7-year-old boy had an intranasal antrostomy made, during which operation both developing permanent canines were injured. Despite complete resection of the roots, both canines erupted normally, supporting recent experimental studies of the eruption mechanism which suggested the importance of the tooth follicle instead of root growth as the essential mechanism for tooth eruption. Methods to prevent damage to permanent tooth germs during intranasal osteotomy are described.

[Immunoglobulins in periapical lesion with special reference to qualitative and quantitative analysis of IgG].

Immunoglobulins in periapical lesions (including 34 radicular cysts and 11 radicular granulomas) were investigated through extracts of the lesions and cystic fluids. The extracts of dental sacs and sera were used as a control. For a qualitative analysis, the immunoglobulins (especially IgG) of each sample were investigated by agarose gel electrophoresis and agarose gel isoelectric focusing. For quantitative analysis, single radial immunodiffusion was employed for determining the concentration of IgG, IgG subclasses, IgA and IgM in the extracts, cystic fluids and autologous sera, also IgE in cy…
