An evaluation of dental pain using visual analogue scales and the Mcgill Pain Questionnaire.

A verbal and a visual scale to assess pain, the McGill Pain Questionnaire and the Visual Analogue Scales, were administered to 50 patients suffering from pulpitis and 50 patients suffering from pericoronitis. The results show that words chosen to describe dental pain of different etiologies include throbbing, sharp, aching, and annoying. Additional descriptive words used by patients with pulpitis, pericoronitis, and postoperative dental pain are sore and shooting and tender. Women who have pulpitis and pericoronitis report higher levels of pain than do men. The greater sensitivity of the score

Dimensionality and reliability of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale in dental patients referred for oral appliance therapy.

BACKGROUND: There is a limited amount of published research on the dimensionality and reliability of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire for adult patients referred for oral appliance therapy. This information is crucial for dentists, who often lack objective measures of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) during titration process of an oral appliance. This study investigated the dimensionality and reliability of ESS scores in adult dental patients with SDB undergoing oral appliance treatment. METHODS: In 103 dental patients with SDB referred by a physician (mean age: 52.3 ± 13.0 ye

Development and validation of an AI-enabled oral score using large-scale dental data.

This research introduces Oral Score Basic (OS-B), a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) derived methodology designed to provide a comprehensive, objective assessment of individual teeth and overall oral health, initially focused on dental conditions. Leveraging data from more than 340,000 patients across 2,558 U.S. dental practices, OS-B combines radiographic findings and periodontal probing depths with a treatment probability-weighted cost function to quantify the severity of dental conditions. The OS-B score aims to address limitations in prior oral health scoring systems by incorporating nua

Cross-cultural Adaptation of the Dental Neglect Scale for 5-year-old Children in Peru.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: The Dental Neglect Scale (DNS) is an instrument to measure the magnitude of negligence in dental care, which was initially created in English and aimed at adolescents. In 2021, Soares et al. published a cross-cultural adaptation of this questionnaire into Portuguese. The aim of this study is to cross-culturally adapt and validate a novel Spanish version of the DNS in 5-year-old children. This will allow evidence of dental neglect, guide further preventive measures in this population, and provide multidisciplinary support. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We followed the protocol su

Absence of histologic signs of chronic inflammation following closed subgingival scaling and root planing using the dental endoscope: human biopsies - a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The primary goal of periodontal therapy is the reduction or elimination of inflammation. Traditionally, this is accomplished through removal of subgingival tooth-borne accretions using non-surgical and/or surgical treatment modalities. Numerous studies indicated the difficulty in removing these accretions to the point that histologic manifestations of chronic inflammation are eliminated. A companion to the current study demonstrated that subgingival inflammation was associated most often with calculus covered with biofilm, not biofilm alone. This pilot study evaluated the histologi

Comparison of the effect of video glasses and nitrous oxide analgesia on the perceived intensity of pain and unpleasantness evoked by dental scaling.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether distraction induced by video glasses had an effect on the perceived intensity of pain and unpleasantness during dental scaling compared with the effect of nitrous oxide (N(2)O) analgesia. The pain stimulus was dental scaling (removal of dental calculus) with an ultrasonic scaler. As a standardised, non-dental painful stimulus, Von Frey filaments were used. A total of 26 patients with superficial chronic periodontitis were enrolled in this randomised, controlled clinical study. The effect of video glasses was compared with N(2)O in one session and t…

Determining the Emotional Intelligence and Compassion Fatigue Among Postgraduate Dental Students Using the Emotional Intelligence Scale and the Quality of Life Scale: An Observational Study.

Introduction Compassion fatigue (CF) is a problem for professionals who work with traumatized individuals. CF manifests as reliving personal sorrow, nightmares, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, numbing or avoiding memories of the experience, and elevated physiological arousal. CF makes professionals more likely to make bad choices, such as misplacing treatments or mistreating patients. Emotional intelligence (EI) is essential to comprehending human behavior, performance, and well-being. EI is a crucial component of professional competency in medical education, as postgraduate dental students ar

Immediate dental implants: insights into early and late failures from a large-scale Chinese cohort.

BACKGROUND: Immediate implant placement (IIP) has emerged as a time-efficient therapeutic approach in dentistry, offering advantages such as reduced treatment duration and improved alveolar bone preservation. However, concerns remain regarding early and late implant failures, and large-scale data on factors associated with IIP failure in Chinese populations are limited. This retrospective observational study aims to identify the factors associated with early and late failure of immediate dental implant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent immediate implantation at the Second Departm

The dental anxiety scale (DAS) - psychometric properties and longitudinal findings among middle-aged adults.

BACKGROUND: The Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) is a well-established instrument for assessing dental anxiety. While numerous cross-sectional studies have examined the DAS, longitudinal research investigating age-related changes, reliability, validity over time, associations with mental and physical health, and demographic determinants remains limited. Furthermore, the possibility of longitudinal changes in its factor structure has received limited attention. METHODS: In 2013/2014, N = 329 German adults (53.6% female, mean age 40.20 years) and in 2019/2020, N = 323 adults (55.7% female, mean age 4

Dental lessons learned from large-scale military dental records in the Israel defense forces: military dentistry as a window into national oral health trends.

Mandatory military service creates a unique opportunity to examine health patterns in a near-comprehensive national cohort of young adults. In this context, large-scale, routinely collected military health data, particularly from dental records, can serve as a powerful lens through which to explore broader public health phenomena. Recent population-based studies conducted within the Israel Defense Forces have demonstrated how clinical records originally intended to ensure operational readiness can also illuminate associations between health outcomes and social determinants. These findings high

Role of Laksha Churna and Madhu Pratisarana after ultrasonic scaling in the management of Dantasharkara (dental calculus): An open-label, standard controlled randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Dental calculus is one of the major problems in dentistry, which is characterized by calcified mass that forms on and adheres to the surface of teeth resulting in bad breath, receding gums and chronically inflamed gingiva. It can be correlated with Dantasharkara (dental calculus), which is characterized by the collection of hardened accumulation of Mala (tartar) at the junction of teeth and gums. Ultrasonic scalars are used for the removal of dental calculus for convenience. In texts, Laksha Churna (powder of Laccifer lacca Kerr) has been mentioned as Vranaropaka (wound healing) an

DMAF-Net: deformable multi-scale adaptive fusion network for dental structure detection with panoramic radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: Panoramic radiography is one of the most commonly used diagnostic modalities in dentistry. Automatic recognition of panoramic radiography helps dentists in decision support. In order to improve the accuracy of the detection of dental structural problems in panoramic radiographs, we have improved the You Only Look Once (YOLO) network and verified the feasibility of this new method in aiding the detection of dental problems. METHODS: We propose a Deformable Multi-scale Adaptive Fusion Net (DMAF-Net) to detect 5 types of dental situations (impacted teeth, missing teeth, implants, cro
