There is little data describing the treatment needs of elderly patients seeking dental care at dental school clinics. Such information would be useful in curriculum planning for predoctoral dental programs in order to ensure that students receive a good basic education in the management and treatment of the older dental patient. In this study, the charts of all patients 65 years of age and older, accepted for treatment at the College of Dentistry, University of Saskatchewan, were reviewed. Data was collected from the dental examination chart and the proposed treatment plan. From a total of 156

This retrospective study was carried out by retrieving the patient data from the diagnostic register of the Department of Oral Medicine a

Dental treatment is the commonest reason for a child to be in hospital in the UK. This is a shocking statistic for a preventable disease. How can we reduce the high numbers of dental general anaesthetics? It is essential that dental treatment under general anaesthesia (GA) is fully justifiable, ensuring that the right patients receive the right treatment. Guidance for general dental practitioners on when to refer a child for a dental GA is discussed. Treatment planning for this dentally high-risk group of children requires a holistic approach. It is complex and requires an experienced and comp

Over the past 20 years, the prevalence of dental disease in Western Australian children has diminished. The causes of this significant improvement in health are associated with better care models, water fluoridation and changes in lifestyle. In this study, the authors examine the reasons for hospitalization for oral health conditions in Western Australia for the calendar year 1995 using the Health Department of WA database. A total of 3,754 episodes of care (4,395 bed days) was recorded for dental conditions. Dental caries resulted in the fifth and sixth highest number of episodes of hospitali

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is the most common reason for hospital admissions for children aged 6-10 years in England. This paper reports on the analysis of secondary data on dental hospital episodes for children residing in London, and its association with oral health inequalities.
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective, non-identifiable patient data sourced from the Hospital Episode Statistics dataset was analysed. Finished consultant episodes (FCEs) were extracted for children aged 1-19 yea

The emergency room records of 1,456 children who were treated at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh with any oral complaint, during a single calendar year, were reviewed with the data entered into a computer. The data were tabulated and statistically analyzed. Trauma (676 visits) was responsible for 46 percent of the total visits, with boys representing a significantly higher percentage of trauma visits than girls (440 vs 236). The total number of trauma visits was also significantly higher for the youngest age-group (birth to three years). Soft-tissue injuries represented a substantially highe

Oral diseases are a burden for developing countries such as India where owing to socioeconomic conditions cost is a factor in selecting the type of treatment. Dental care in India is provided at various levels of care including standalone clinics run by individual dental surgeons, multi-speciality dental centres providing specialist care under one roof including paediatric, prosthodontics, and so on and dental centres affiliated with hospitals having facilities for provision of operation theatre and anaesthesia services. Most dental procedures are performed as day-care procedures requiring loc

Ingested or aspirated dental prostheses may cause dysphagia and respiratory obstructions. We present the case of a patient with dementia who had a dental prosthesis lodged in his hypopharynx. This patient had routine radiologic studies and diagnostic scans to rule out primary and metastatic disease, was placed on total parenteral nutrition, and underwent several endoscopies before his dysphagia was related to aspiration of a dental prosthesis. The prosthesis was evident on radiologic examination, but was overlooked by the admitting service in the patient's differential diagnosis. After removal
