In vivo sensitivity of human root dentin to air blast and scratching.

BACKGROUND: The present study evaluated the prevalence of radicular sensitivity to scratching as well as the effects of a common oxalate desensitizing agent on sensitivity to air blast and scratching. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients self-reporting dentin hypersensitivity, with at least two hypersensitive teeth, were included. Prior to any treatment, their sensitivity to air blast was recorded and rated as absent or present, and the force necessary to trigger pain when scratching was measured with a scratchometer in cN. For each patient one sensitive tooth was treated with an oxalate desensitiz

Mechanistic insights into oxalate-based desensitizers: Calcium oxalate deposition and reduced calcium release under acid challenge.

OBJECTIVE: Oxalate salts are used clinically as a desensitizing agent; however, the physicochemical mechanisms underlying its interaction with hard dental tissues are unclear. This study aimed at elucidating how oxalic acid treatment affects the demineralization behavior of hydroxyapatite (HAp), focusing on ion redistribution, phase formation, and the reversibility of its protective effect. METHODS: HAp powder was treated with oxalic acid solutions at concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 0.5 M. Calcium and phosphorus released from dentin surfaces during oxalic acid treatment and subsequent la

Hypersensitive dentin: testing of procedures for mechanical and chemical obliteration of dentinal tubuli.

This study examined by scanning electron microscopy the effect of various mechanical and chemical procedures in obliterating dentinal tubuli. Dentin blocks containing open, cross-sectioned dentinal tubuli were separated into one experimental and one control area. The mechanical treatments consisted of 20 seconds of continuous instrumentation with sharp and dull curets, finely textured inserts for the EVA reciprocating handpiece, metal and plastic inserts for a sonic scaler, and metal inserts for an ultrasonic scaler. Chemical treatments included a light-cured dental resin and active obliterati

The role of toothpaste in the aetiology and treatment of dentine hypersensitivity.

Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common, painful dental condition with a multi-factorial aetiology. The hydrodynamic mechanism theory to explain dentine sensitivity also appears to fit DH: lesions exhibiting large numbers of open dentinal tubules at the surface and patent to the pulp. By definition, DH can only occur when dentine becomes exposed (lesion localisation) and tubules opened (lesion initiation), thus permitting increased fluid flow in tubules on stimulation. Erosion, particularly from dietary acids appears to play a dominant role in both processes. Toothbrushing with most toothpas

[Dentinal hypersensitivity].

Dentinal hypersensitivity is defined as short and transient painful response of exposed dentin, usually cervical, to different stimuli, such as thermal, mechanical osmotic or chemical. The etiology of dentinal hypersensitivity is open tubules (because of enamel loss or gingival recession), allowing painful stimulus to reach the pulp. The hydrodynamic theory explains the mechanism through which pain is aroused. When treating dentinal hypersensitivity, dentists always have to rule out other pathologies, such as carries, leakage, postoperative sensitivity, cracked tooth etc., and only then assess

Bioengineered α-Hairpin peptide TKH with GKG linker: a LLPS-mediated biomimetic mineralization system for intrafibrillar remineralization and deep dentin tubule occlusion.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) originates from collagen exposure and dentinal tubules (DTs) patency caused by mechanical abrasion or demineralization. For an effective long-term therapeutic desensitizing agent, the ability to achieve deep tubular occlusion, stable remineralization, and satisfactory biocompatibility simultaneously is essential. In this study, we designed a novel α-hairpin peptide, TKH, engineered by incorporating a flexible GKG linker into an α-helical template, and provide an analysis of its liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and self-assembly properties. TKH effectively stab

Influence of three different sealants on root dentin demineralization in situ.

PURPOSE: To evaluate in situ the onset of initial demineralization in human dentin pretreated either with two different dentin bonding agents or a desensitizer. METHODS: 28 freshly extracted human molars were included in this study. The root surfaces were thoroughly cleaned, thereby removing the cementum. From each tooth four root dentin specimens were prepared. The specimens were distributed among the following experimental groups: C: control group (untreated), S: Syntac Classic, X: Xeno III, and H: Hyposen. For each subject, one dentin specimen of each group was inserted into both buccal as

Dentine hypersensitivity: a clinical trial to compare 2 strontium densensitizing toothpastes with a conventional fluoride toothpaste.

A considerable number of varied agents are apparently effective in the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity. In particular, the literature supports the efficacy of fluoride and strontium containing formulations. Despite this, comparisons between strontium products are relatively few in number and surprisingly there are almost no evaluations of these products against "bench mark," conventional commercial fluoride toothpastes. This study was a double-blind parallel group comparison of two strontium-based desensitizing toothpaste products and a conventional fluoride product in the treatment of d

Non-surgical management of tooth hypersensitivity.

Tooth sensitivity is a common complaint of patients in dental practices. Studies have demonstrated dentinal hypersensitivity to affect 10-30% of the population. There are various potential causes of tooth sensitivity and a variety of available treatment options. This narrative review will discuss the possible aetiology of this condition, as well as the treatment modalities available. A tailor-made treatment plan that starts with the most non-invasive treatment options and escalates only when those options have proven insufficient in alleviating symptoms should be provided for each patient. Onl

Dentine hypersensitivity: the effects of brushing desensitizing toothpastes, their solid and liquid phases, and detergents on dentine and acrylic: studies in vitro.

Dentine exhibiting symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity has tubules open at the dentine surface and patent to the pulp. The mechanisms whereby dentinal tubules are exposed is ill understood but probably involves a variety of abrasive and/or erosive agents. This study in vitro examined the quantitative and qualitative effects of toothpastes, their solid and liquid phases and detergents on dentine and acrylic. Abrasion of dentine and acrylic were measured by surfometry. Morphological changes to dentine were assessed by scanning electron microscopy. Abrasion of dentine and acrylic by toothpastes
