[Multi-factoriality of dentine hypersensitivity].

INTRODUCTION: Dentine hypersensitivity has been defined as a sharp, short pain arising from exposed dentin in response to stimuli typically thermal, evaporative tactile, osmoticor, chemical and which cannot be ascribed to any other form of dental defect or pathology. PREVALENCE: The most affected patients range in age from 20 to 40. The following teeth tend to be most sensitive: cuspids, premnolars and incisors, location-concentrated on the facial surface. MORPHOLOGICAL BASES OF DENTINE HYPERSENSITIVITY: Sensitive teeth have much greater numbers of open tubules per unit area and the average d

Sensitivity and specificity of the ICDAS II system and bitewing radiographs for detecting occlusal caries using the Spectra™ caries detection system as the reference test in children.

BACKGROUND: Most studies assessing the sensitivity and specificity of caries detection methods have been performed in vitro using the histological method as the gold standard showing inconsistent values. The aim of this study was to compare the sensitivity and specificity in detecting occlusal caries using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS II) with the radiographic method (RM), while using the Spectra™ Caries Detection System (SCDS) as the reference test. METHODS: One hundred sixty children, ages 7-12 years, participated in the study. Five zones in the occlusal s

Aetiological, predisposing and environmental factors in dentine hypersensitivity.

If the hydrodynamic theory of stimulus transmission across dentine is valid, sensitive dentine has tubules open at the surface and patent to the pulp. Direct and indirect evidence supports this supposition. Factors that result in dentine exposure remove the covering enamel or periodontal tissues (gingival recession). Epidemiological and clinical data for the distribution of exposed cervical dentine indicate that chronic trauma from physical and chemical factors is the most significant aetiological factor. Brushing with a toothpaste may not open dentinal tubules. It is more likely that toothpas

Cationic Poly(amino acid)/Black Phosphorus Hydrogel for Immediate and Durable Relief of Dentin Hypersensitivity Through Ion Flow Blockade, Photo-Thermal Occlusion, and Biomineralization.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) stems from exposed dentinal tubules, where external stimuli induce fluid movement, stimulate pulp nerves, and cause acute pain. A significant challenge in current DH management is that most commercially available desensitizing agents often lack both immediate and long-term efficacy. To address this, a black phosphorus (BP) nanosheet-composited methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)2k-block-poly(L-methionine)27-block-poly(L-lysine)5 (PMK5) cationic hydrogel (PMK5/BP) operates through three steps to relieve DH, including ion flow blocking, the photo-thermal effect of BP, and

Study suggests dentine bonding agents provided better relief from dentine hypersensitivity than a desensitising toothpaste.

STUDY DESIGN: Randomised, controlled, single-blind, three-arm parallel-group trial set in general dental practice with a single general dental practitioner operator/assessor. INTERVENTION: Seventy-five adult patients, with basic periodontal examination scores of 0 in all sextants, good oral hygiene, at least one sensitive tooth (not diagnosed as pulpitis) and willing to comply with the trial regime were entered into the trial and randomised. Seventy-two participants completed the study. The three interventions were; non-desensitising toothpaste (Colgate Cavity Protection Regular, Colgate-Palm

Magnetic Janus Nanomotor for Dentin Hypersensitivity Treatment.

Reoccluding the exposed dentinal tubules is crucial for treating dentin hypersensitivity (DH). However, the narrow structure and high-density negative charges of dentinal tubules impede the penetration of filling repair materials to effectively achieve deep-induced mineralization for DH treatment. Herein, a morphologically controllable Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic Janus nanomotors (MJNs) were synthesized via a seeded emulsion-mediated surface growth strategy. The as-achieved MJNs exhibit magnetic response, with a head diameter of about 200 nm, and snake-like morphology with a tunable tail length regula

Titaniumtetrafluoride for treatment of hypersensitive dentine.

Dentine hypersensitivity in cervical areas and severe dentine sensitivity in teeth prepared for restorations were treated with a titaniumtetrafluoride solution. Patients included in the study complained spontaneously about the sensitivity in intact dentine surfaces. Thirty patients with at least one tooth on each side of the maxilla and/or mandible experiencing moderate or severe sensitivity in cervical areas participated. The degree of sensitivity was determined by scraping an explorer over the dentine surface and by air blast. At least one sensitive tooth on one side of the jaw was treated w

An analysis of the aetiology, prevalence and clinical features of dentine hypersensitivity in a general dental population.

AIM: Dentine hypersensitivity may be defined as pain arising from exposed dentine typically in response to chemical, thermal or osmotic stimuli that cannot be explained as a rising from any other form of dental defect or pathology. The aim to this cross-sectional study was to determine prevalence of dentine hypersensitivity (DH) and to examine some associated etiological factors in a study of patients visiting general dental practitioners in Turkey. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 1368 patients were examined for the presence of cervical dentine hypersensitivity by means of a questionnaire an

Impaired mineral quality in dentin in X-linked hypophosphatemia.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a skeletal disorder arising from mutations in the PHEX gene, transmitted in most cases as an X-linked dominant trait. PHEX deficiency leads to renal phosphate wasting and hypophosphatemia, as well as impaired mineralization of bone and dentin, resulting in severe skeletal and dental complications. Dentin mineralization defects appear as characteristic, large interglobular spaces resulting from the lack of fusion of calculospherites in the circumpulpal region during the mineralization process. Here, we examined changes in the composition and structure of denti

The role of toothpaste in the aetiology and treatment of dentine hypersensitivity.

Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common, painful dental condition with a multi-factorial aetiology. The hydrodynamic mechanism theory to explain dentine sensitivity also appears to fit DH: lesions exhibiting large numbers of open dentinal tubules at the surface and patent to the pulp. By definition, DH can only occur when dentine becomes exposed (lesion localisation) and tubules opened (lesion initiation), thus permitting increased fluid flow in tubules on stimulation. Erosion, particularly from dietary acids appears to play a dominant role in both processes. Toothbrushing with most toothpas

Clinical dentin hypersensitivity: understanding the causes and prescribing a treatment.

Dentin hypersensitivity is a common condition of transient tooth pain associated with a variety of exogenous stimuli. There is substantial variation in the response to such stimuli from one person to another. Except for sensitivity associated with tooth bleaching or other tooth pathology, the clinical cause of dentin hypersensitivity is exposed dentinal tubules as a result of gingival recession and subsequent loss of cementum on root surfaces. The most widely accepted theory of how the pain occurs is Brännström's hydrodynamic theory of dentin hypersensitivity. Dentinal hypersensitivity must be

[Dentin hypersensitivity and its significance in dental practice].

Dentin hypersensitivity is not a new disease, more than a hundred years ago Gysi, later Brännström and many others were dealing with the problems of its symptoms, pathomechanism, differential diagnosis and therapy. The growing interest today maybe attributed to improving oral health, and to the presence of more teeth in older age, as a consequence of decreasing caries prevalence. The exposure of dentine surfaces due to gingival recession, erosion and abrasion may cause serious complaints, occurs in about 40% of the adult population, however, few of them turn to the dentist. Therefore, practisi
