Comparison of the pattern of agenesis in the primary and permanent dentitions in a population characterized by agenesis in the primary dentition.

The first aim of this study was to collect a large sample of radiographs from children with congenitally missing teeth (CMT) in the primary dentition and to analyse the local relationship between agenesis of a primary tooth and the presence/absence of its permanent successor. The second aim was to compare, in the same sample, the pattern of agenesis in the primary dentition with the developmental pattern seen in the permanent dentition. 124 dentists from 72 municipalities contributed to the investigation of a total of 213 children. The dentists were asked to lend existing radiographic material

[From the mixed dentition to the permanent dentition: how to manage space while guiding eruption?].

In the mixed dentition, when there is a discrepancy between the bony structures and the teeth, in certain cases, serial extractions are performed in order to guide the eruption of permanent teeth and obtain a correct occlusal function. The treatment consists in the extraction of primary teeth and then of first bicuspids. The choice of the first tooth to be extracted is based upon the position of the crowns of the permanent teeth and their degree of root maturation. Then the first bicuspid is extracted as soon as or prior to its eruption. This interceptive treatment has limited indications whic

Non-syndromic oligodontia in permanent dentition: a case report.

Tooth agenesis is one of the most common congenital anomalies seen in humans. Although absence of one or more teeth is common but absence of multiple teeth is rare. Oligodontia is a rare developmental anomaly, involving agenesis of six or more permanent teeth, excluding the third molars. The reported prevalence of oligodontia in permanent dentition is 0.14%. Oligodontia can present as an isolated condition or as a part of a syndrome. The present case report highlights a unique case of non syndromic oligodontia, with agenesis of four permanent incisors, left permanent canine and right second pr

Maxillary canine-first premolar transposition in the permanent dentition.

Maxillary canine premolar transposition is the most frequently reported transposition type, which many orthodontists face. Although correcting the transposed tooth order is not advised after the eruption of the permanent tooth, several articles published in the last decade demonstrated nonextraction treatment of transposition using fixed mechanics. This article describes the nonextraction treatment of a complete transposition between a maxillary left canine and a first premolar, using similar mechanics as suggested earlier. The correct tooth order was established with a functional Class I cani

Ethnic differences in the root to crown ratios of the permanent dentition.

OBJECTIVE: Root resorption due to orthodontic tooth movement may adversely affect the root-crown (R/C) ratios of permanent teeth, especially in patients with Short Root Anomaly (SRA), a poorly understood disorder affecting root development. Evaluation of SRA R/C ratios to normal dentition would facilitate diagnosis and orthodontic treatment planning. However, reference values are not available for all ethnicities. Our goal was to determine R/C ratios of permanent teeth and their relationship to gender and ethnicity. SETTING/SAMPLE: A retrospective study of 333 patients (109 Caucasians, 112 Af

Survey of talon cusps in the permanent dentition of a Turkish population.

AIM: Talon cusp is the name given to the accessory tubercles located on the lingual faces of anterior teeth. The occurrence of talon cusps has been reported among Europeans and Asians. However, there are few reports of this anomaly in Caucasians as well as a paucity of literature on its characteristics. Today there are seven million Turkish citizens of Caucasian origin that have settled in the Marmara, Central-Anatolia, East-Anatolia, and Black Sea regions of Turkey. The aim of this study is to present 27 Caucasian cases with 33 taloned teeth. This study is the first that was undertaken to inv

[New investigations on the question of secular acceleration of permanent dentition].

A sample of 1,310 girls, 5 to 13 years of age, drawn from Mainz, Wiesbaden and vicinity was studied to establish the eruption time of the permanent dentition. The data of the median date of eruption of different teeth was determined employing a nonparametric test for the estimation of a survivorship function with doubly censored data (TURNBULL 1974). The method presented shows a marked superiority over other techniques used to verify the median date of eruption. The diachronic comparison of several samples--mainly from the Rhine-Main-Area-encompassing the years 1909 till today, showed no unifo

Oligodontia in the primary dentition with permanent successors: report of case.

A case of oligodontia in the primary dentition with corresponding permanent successors is described. A two-year-old Japanese boy was admitted to the pedodontic clinic with the chief complaint of congenitally missing primary teeth. The boy appeared to be normally developed and was in good physical health. There was no history of trauma, extraction, or exfoliation of primary teeth. Clinical examination showed that eight anterior teeth were missing. Also, a canine and three first molars were much smaller in size and were malformed. However, radiographic examination at age four years, ten months s

[A rare case with hyperdontia in deciduous and hypodontia in the permanent dentition].

Brief literature data are presented about the incidence of the anomalies in the number of teeth: decreased--hypodontia and increased--hyperdontia, and the possibilities of their manifestation in the deciduous and later in the permanent dentition. A rare case is described with hyperdontia in the deciduous but hypodontia in the permanent dentition, namely: supernumerary II and absent 5[25/5[5 in a boy aged 4 years and 7 months. No family loaded anamnesis has been established nor any deviations in the physical and neuro-psychic development of the child. The necessity of an early and accurate diag

[Angle class I malocclusion in primary dentition and findings in permanent dentition--a follow-up study].

The aim of the study was to examine stability and changes in Angle Class I malocclusion from deciduous to permanent dentition in 168 subjects. All the subjects had Class I malocclusion in deciduous dentition, and were examined by the same orthodontist on two occasions during deciduous and permanent dentition. None of the subjects had received orthodontic therapy in the meantime. The results showed considerable changes from primary to permanent dentition. Crowding in primary dentition was retained in permanent dentition in 45.2% cases. In 16.2% cases it changed into normocclusion and 38.6% subj

[Prevalence of congenital hypodontia in the permanent dentition and its treatment].

Congenital aplasia (agenesis) is an important development dental anomaly. There is a big discrepancy between the data on the prevalence of aplasia in dental literature. The authors analyzed orthopantomograms of 1875 children and adolescents at the Department of Dentistry for Children and Orthodontics of Semmelweis University. The prevalence of congenital aplasia was found 15.68% (294 subjects). There was no difference between the sexes. The most frequently missing teeth were the upper lateral incisors, the lower second premolars, the upper second premolars and the lower central incisors. The h

A catalogue of anomalies and traits of the permanent dentition of southern Chinese.

Variations in size, form and morphology of the teeth can result in anomalies such as macrodontia, microdontia, hyperdontia, hypodontia, double tooth, dens evaginatus, dens invaginatus, and talon cusp. A trait may occur more commonly in certain ethnic groups. Among these traits are shovel-shaped incisors, lingual tubercle, Carabelli's trait and protostylid of the molars. Because people are traveling more frequently than ever before, and there are many migrants in different parts of the world, it is increasingly important for dental professionals to be aware of the characteristics and prevalence

Survey of anomalies in primary teeth and their correlation with the permanent dentition.

The purpose of the study was to investigate primary and permanent tooth anomalies of 5-year-old children in Taranaki; 1,680 children were examined by school dental therapists, and the presence of hypodontia, hyperdontia, and double teeth recorded. Panoramic radiographs were taken of those children with anomalies of the primary teeth. Anomalies of the primary teeth were detected in 23 children (1.4 percent). Six children (3 boys and 3 girls) had hypodontia, 3 children (2 boys and 1 girl) had a supernumerary tooth, and 14 children (9 boys and 5 girls) had double teeth. Six of the affected teeth
