The aim of this study was to assess current evidence for the surgical correction of dentofacial deformities in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement from juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). A systematic literature review, according to the PRISMA guidelines, was conducted. Meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, observational studies, and case reports were eligible for inclusion. Exclusion criteria were no JIA diagnosis, no clearly defined outcomes, dual publications (except meta-analyses), non peer-reviewed studies, non English language publications, and

The aims of the study were to investigate the alteration of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) after correction of dentofacial deformities by orthodontic treatment in conjunction with orthognathic surgery; and to compare the frequency of TMD in patients with dentofacial deformities with an age and gender matched control group. TMD were evaluated in 121 consecutive patients (treatment group), referred for orthognathic surgery, by a questionnaire and a clinical examination. 18 months after treatment, 81% of the patients completed a follow-up examination. The control group comprised 56 age and gen

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common rheumatic disease in childhood and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is often involved. TMJ arthritis in growing individuals can cause deformation of facial skeleton (dentofacial deformity) and TMJ components (TMJ deformity). Treatment outcome hinges on early initiation of anti-inflammatory treatment and orthopaedic treatment with dental splints. The aim of the present study was to characterize the radiological signs of dentofacial deformity in patients with a JIA-induced need for orthopaedic treatment. We retrospectively studied 96 patien

INTRODUCTION: At the time of orthognathic surgery the maxillofacial surgeon has an opportunity to further contribute to a patient's quality of life by simultaneously addressing long-standing breathing and sinus drainage difficulties that may coexist with the jaw deformity. Breathing difficulties may range from isolated symptomatic nasal airway obstruction to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and should not be overlooked. The impact of the combined occurrence of nasal obstruction and maxillary deformity has been recognized and discussed in the literature.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have establish

BACKGROUND: This article aims to present and discuss 53 patients who received a new identity because of major changes to the face after treatment with bimaxillary osteotomy, concomitant maxillomalar augmentation, genioplasty, and rhinoplastic procedures for their complex dentofacial skeletal deformity and class 3 malocclusion.
METHODS: During a 12-year period (January 1993 to April 2005), more than 500 patients with dentofacial deformities and malocclusions have undergone orthognathic surgery performed by a team consisting of the same plastic surgeons and orthodontists. Among this group, 53 p

As improvements in diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical techniques have evolved it has become increasingly more common to consider simultaneous mobilization of the maxilla and mandible in order to achieve optimal correction of selected dentofacial deformities. In the experiences of the authors, there are patients with specific deformities of the Class III, Class II, Class I, and asymmetry types who can benefit from simultaneous mobilization of both jaws. It is the purpose of this article, the first in a series of three, to detail those specific conditions which warrant consideration for

INTRODUCTION: Patients with dentofacial deformities present difficulties at work and in social adaptation. At the same time, they often appear depressed, and as a consequence, the psychosocial aspects of surgery play an important role. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects that depression causes in the quality of life of patients with dentofacial deformity.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Filthy patients were recruited 1 year before undergoing orthognathic surgery and correlated oral and general health with the presence and absence of depression. In order to accomplish this, these patien

Background/Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the strain values (SVs) of masseter muscle activity in dentofacial deformities (DDs) using ultrasound elastography. Methods: The DD group consisted of 60 patients with dentofacial deformities with skeletal class II or III malocclusion, and the control group consisted of 26 volunteers with normal occlusion. The SVs and the cross-sectional area of the masseter muscle were measured using an ultrasonic elastography. These were measured at three functional positions: resting, mouth opening, and clenching. The SVs were statistically compared with th

BACKGROUND: Individuals with dentofacial deformities (DFD) present several orofacial myofunctional alterations. However, the characteristics of tongue position and motor performance, which are crucial for DFD assessment and treatment, remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: To assess orofacial myofunctional status and analyze tongue position, mobility, behavior during swallowing, and pressure/strength performance in patients with Class II and Class III DFD compared with control subjects, as well as to formulate a tongue functionality index.
METHODS: Fifty-six patients with DFD were divided int

UNLABELLED: Dentofacial deformities are dys-morpho-functional disorders involving the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). Many authors have reported a TMJ improvement in dysfunctional subjects with malocclusion after orthodontic or combined orthodontic and surgical treatment particularly for the relief of pain. In particular, few studies have highlighted the demographic and clinical predictors of response to surgical treatment. To date, no genetic factor has yet been identified as a predictor of response to surgical treatment. The aim of this cohort study is therefore to identify single-nucleotide

Several congenital abnormalities result in dentofacial and craniofacial deformities in the middle third of the face. Each of these deformities presents unique problems with multiple coexisting anomalies of the entire dentofacial and craniofacial region. Those engaged in the habilitation of patients with congenital facial deformities must be cognizant of the fact that, unlike in individuals with developmental dentofacial deformities there are unique ophthalmological, otolaryngological, neurological, dental, speech, and psychological problems coexisting with these conditions. Multiple procedures

BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery significantly influences psychosocial well-being. Individuals with dentofacial deformities may experience psychological distress, characterized by negative affectivity (NA) and social inhibition (SI). When these 2 traits coexist, they define Type D personality.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of Type D personality traits in patients with Class III dentofacial deformities and assess changes in these traits, which inherently reflect variations in Type D personality, following orthognathic surgery.
