Evaluation of disc position in edentulous patients with complete dentures.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the condyle-disc relationship on magnetic resonance image (MRI) in a group of subjects with silent temporomandibular joints (TMJs) when tested clinically with those in subjects with discernible temporomandibular sounds. Study design Twenty-five completely edentulous patients were selected to participate in this study. The study was based on bilateral MRIs of 15 patients (with articular sound) and 10 symptom-free volunteers (control). RESULTS: It was noted that disc displacement was found in 45% of the TMJs with no history of articular sounds. In 6 TMJs of contr

Overdentures for acquired and congenital anomalies: 1. Complete dentures.

Overdenture principles can be applied to dentitions that are relatively complete without preparation or alteration of the existing teeth. Such overdentures may cover the traditional denture-bearing tissues as well as the unaltered remaining teeth. The primary advantages derived are reversibility, simplicity, and cost effectiveness. The primary indications are restoration of congenital and acquired anomalies. A detailed clinical and laboratory technique for fabricating these overdentures is presented. Effective restorations require care and attention to detail using the principles of convention

Cephalometric evaluation of the upper airway in patients with complete dentures.

AIM: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a disorder characterised by repeated obstructions of the upper airway, with consequent episodes of apnea and hypopnea during sleep, snoring, and daytime sleepiness. Recently, a role of edentulism in the occurrence or in the worsening of this disorder was suspected. The aim of the study was to assess, through a cephalometric analysis, if the removal of denture induces, and where, modifications that can favour the pharynx collapse. METHODS: A total of 27 subjects with complete or partial loss of teeth and with heavy loss of the vertical dimension,

Hollow Complete Denture With a Speech Bulb Prosthesis: A Case Report.

Speech is the most basic yet invaluable mode of expression for an individual. Alterations in speech can have vast effects on the psychological well-being of a person, hampering social interactions. Congenital or traumatic defects of the hard and soft palate result in velopharyngeal dysfunction, which often results in abnormal and aberrant speech. Apart from these, it is also a common outcome following surgical repair of cleft palate. Prosthodontic management of such cases with velopharyngeal obturators to improve speech and function is well documented and known to give optimal results. In this

Complete denture fabrication using piezography and CAD-CAM: A clinical report.

To provide maxillary and mandibular complete dentures for a patient with severe ridge resorption, the denture space was recorded using the piezography technique. After the piezographic space was scanned, a virtual tooth arrangement and festooning were performed within the space using computer-aided design software. The denture bases were milled from a polymethylmethacrylate resin block using computer-aided manufacturing, and commercially available denture teeth were bonded with resin adhesive. Using the piezography technique described, physiologically appropriate complete dentures were fabrica

Technique for recording the centric relation of digitally fabricated complete dentures.

A straightforward intraoral gothic arch tracer for recording the centric relation (CR) of digitally fabricated dentures is described. The gothic arch tracer and evaluated dentures were 3-dimensionally (3D) printed in a single step using polylactic acid. The tracing plate was located on the palatal side of the maxillary denture, with 3 needles arranged in an equilateral triangle connected to the fixation plates on the anterior side of the mandible. The height of the needles ensured the occlusal vertical distance (OVD) and stability of the maxillary and mandibular evaluation dentures. Computer-a

Refining Complete Dentures: Optimizing Results with Enhanced Phonetics and Esthetics.

Tooth loss and subsequent complete denture rehabilitation can profoundly affect a patient's psychological and social well-being. Dentures play an important role in helping individuals regain a sense of normalcy as well as facilitating communication in today's appearance-conscious society. However, common issues with dentures include discomfort while chewing and dissatisfaction with esthetics and speech. Prosthetic rehabilitation for complete denture patients should aim not just at replacing missing teeth but at fully restoring masticatory functions and appearance. This article outlines a simpl
