Historically, cast gold occlusal surfaces for complete or removable partial dentures have been fabricated with retentive loops or beads and luted to prepared denture teeth with acrylic resin or attached to tooth-colored, heat-processed acrylic resin. At present, alternatives to mechanical retention for attaching resin to metal include chemical bonding of the resin after placement of intermediate ceramic or tin layers and the use of chemically adhesive resin cements. Compared to mechanical retention, the chemical bonding of resin to metal requires less gold and allows more room for properly con

Denture retention in edentulous patients following resection for mucormycosis or carcinoma is challenging because of the lack of bony support. Traditional dentures are often unsatisfactory, and implants require complex bone grafting. This clinical report presents a novel approach using 3-dimensionally (3D) printed intramucosal inserts and a digitally fabricated hollow denture. The process involved conventional impressions, digital designing, and 3D printing of both the hollow denture and the custom intramucosal inserts based on mucosal thickness. This approach led to improved retention, functi

BACKGROUND: The optimal impression technique for flabby ridge cases remains ambiguous despite the advancements in impression techniques. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to compare the Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) and retention of maxillary dentures fabricated from intraoral scanning (IOS) versus window impression technique in completely edentulous patients with maxillary flabby ridges. METHODS: The study utilized a crossover design, where participants were randomly assigned to receive conventional complete dentures fabricated by using two different techniques for c

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of a dynamic impression lining material (DIL) on the retention and stability of mandibular complete dentures (LCD), masticatory performance, and the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of the patients wearing complete denture (CD) compared with those wearing a denture with conventional hard denture liner (HL).
METHODS: Twenty-five patients who wore CD with an ill-fitting LCD were randomly assigned to two groups: LCD relined with DIL (Dynamic impression lining material) or HL (Tokuyama® Rebase II (fast)). Three objective measures (denture retention, st

INTRODUCTION: GAPO syndrome (#230740) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by growth retardation, alopecia, pseudoanodontia, and optic malformations, hence the acronym GAPO. The presence of both dentitions in the ridge leads to abnormally thick alveolar ridges, which are thought to hinder full denture fabrication and placement. This article aims to report the success of full dentures in two cases with GAPO syndrome with no surgical intervention, and we include observations from the follow-ups.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with GAPO syndrome and confirmed by molecul

As an alternative to complete dentures, overdentures are well established as a sound therapeutic modality for patients with terminal dentition. By utilizing natural tooth roots and their periodontal structures to aid in support, overdentures maintain proprioceptive mediation and a mechanism for masticatory force vectors that favor bone retention over bond resorption. The degree of stability enhancement and denture retention from retained roots varies with the design and environment of the prosthesis. This article reviews various aspects of removable partial over-denture use.

Overdentures are one of the most sought-after treatment options for patients with few remaining natural teeth. They are desired as they tend to preserve the natural teeth and its intact periodontium. This helps in reducing the residual ridge resorption and preserve proprioception. These characteristics offer better masticatory ability in patients rehabilitated with overdentures when compared to conventional complete dentures. Enhancements such as telescopic denture for better retention prove to be efficient clinically. Telescopic dentures enable frictional type of retention. This is a case rep

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in denture wearers and the association between prosthetic factors and this condition.
BACKGROUND: There is no consensus about the relationship between prosthetic factors and TMD among denture wearers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample was composed of 92 patients wearing both maxillary and mandibular complete dentures. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) were adopted for patient examination. Objective evaluation of denture quality was determined by analysis of retention a

A maxillary torus provides a challenge when restoring an edentulous arch. Tori tend to have very thin mucosa and can be intolerant of normal pressures from a denture base. The tori tend to have large undercuts and at times extend to the junction with the soft palate, preventing the creation of a good palatal seal. Triple lamination involves combining 3 materials to fabricate a denture base that utilizes the retentive aspects of the torus. The thermoplastic flange provides a measure of flexibility, allowing the denture to seat over the torus. The resilient liner provides a cushion to diffuse th

Conventional complete dentures cause underlying bone resorption over time, which leads to retention loss and poor adaptation of denture. These complications can be prevented in use of root-supported or tooth-supported overdentures. A tooth-retained overdenture with intra-radicular attachments is recommended in case of insufficient inter-arch space to improve denture retention, stability, function, and support. This study describes a tooth-supported overdenture to gain retention from the canine teeth, and compensate for the limitation in inter-occlusal space. This clinical report helps dental c

The authors examined 746 cast denture constructions with an average wearing time of 6 years to study the influence of cast denture constructions on caries increment. The mode of wear of the cast denture constructions had no influence on caries incidence, whereas effects exerted by the duration of wear and the presence of soft deposits could be detected. The evaluation of the functional performance of cast denture constructions showed that the clinical serviceability amounts to more than 8 years.

This study aimed to examine the retentive characteristics of each retentive element material and the effects from thermocycling using the two implant-retained mandibular overdenture model. Two stud abutments and three retentive element materials; nylon, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyvinylsiloxane (PVS) were used in this study. Four tested groups, with a total of 40 overdentures, were fabricated, including a Locator® abutment with nylon retention insert (NY), Novaloc® abutment with PEEK retention insert (PK), Locator® abutment with PVS retention insert (RL), and Novaloc® abutment with PVS

The posterior palatal seal contributes significantly to the retention of a maxillary complete denture. It is commonly considered to lie on the tissue covering the soft palate. However, no references are available to substantiate this correlation between the clinical and anatomic placement. This research used ultrasound instrumentation as a noninvasive procedure to locate the anatomic structures in the posterior palatal seal region of 15 maxillary edentulous patients. The posterior border was determined to lie on the tissue covering the soft palate.

Located at the border between vestibule and palatine area, the retrotuberosity space plays a major role in full dentures, as it involves the lateral portion of the posterior palatine joint. The arrangement of the pterygo-maxillary complex determines the morphology of this space and its use in full prosthesis. In most cases, the pterygo-mandibular ligament originates at a distance of the tuberosity, leaving a small mucosal fold, posterior to the tuberosity. This element, often mistaken with the origin of the ligament, should neither be released at the prosthetic border, nor be considered as a n

Inserting a dental implant in a strategic position under a removable partial denture (RPD) can upgrade the RPD design by changing a mainly tissue-supported RPD to an implant-tissue-supported RPD or an implant-tooth-tissue-supported RPD with better retention, support, and stability. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient (female, 77-year-old) was unsatisfied with her maxillary and mandibular clasp-retained removable dentures (RDs). Medical, social, and systemic health evaluations revealed that the patient was healthy. Dental history, intraoral and extraoral examinations, functional screening, and esthe

The palatal lift prosthesis is used to alleviate rhinopharyngeal closure dysfunction. It is generally problematical to use in edentulous patients, because the palatal lift prosthesis requires secure retention of the denture base and is difficult for the patient to retain while eating. This article describes the fabrication of a complete denture with a removable palatal lift prosthesis and a clinical evaluation of the denture's stability. A sprue pin and tube were used as a connecting attachment between the removable palatal lift prosthesis and the denture base. The force required for lifting t

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To propose an alternate, r eliable, and easy-to-use functional swallow method for establishing the posterior palatal seal.
BACKGROUND: Accurate r egistration of the posterior palatal seal is crucial to the success of the maxillary complete denture. The conventionally used functional "Ah" technique may not be r eliable at times to record the posterior palatal seal, hence compromising the retention of the maxillary complete denture. Case description and technique: A 70-year-old female patient requiring complete dentures presented with an unusually tense soft palate during the

AIM: To achieve retention in severely resorbed mandibular ridges during impression making and to maintain the retention and stability of these dentures during function.
BACKGROUND: No good method with adequate clinical photographs that will empower the dentist with the necessary skill has been reported in the literature.
TECHNIQUE: The technique involves making a preliminary impression in alginate to record the denture bearing area clearly, doing a border moulding procedure with excess width to fill the wide sulcus present; except in the area of anterior lingual flange from second premolar t

BACKGROUND: The establishment of good facial esthetics is one of the main objectives of complete denture construction. Unfortunately, it may be the caused issue for patients having a prominent premaxilla due to excessive lip support by the labial flange of the maxillary denture. Open-face dentures (OFD) may suggest suitable prosthetic management for these patients. However, clinical evidence regarding the efficiency of OFD is scarce.
METHODS: A total of 38 completely edentulous participants having prominent premaxilla and skeletal class I Angle's classification were enrolled in this study. Ea
