Depressive Personality Disorder (DPD) has been under consideration for inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders since 1994; yet, few studies have been published that test whether those with DPD have affective experiences that are characterized exclusively by depression and negative affect. One hundred ninety-seven undergraduate students were interviewed for DPD and Borderline Personality Disorder with the Personality Disorder Interview for DSM-IV (Widiger, Mangine, Corbitt, Ellis, & Thomas, 1995), in order to control for frequently co-occurring BPD which is charac

Immunosuppressive pharmacologic agents are associated with a diverse array of adverse drug reactions. One of these agents, mycophenolate mofetil, is indicated for prevention of allogeneic organ transplant rejection and has recently been evaluated for treatment of autoimmune disease states, including myasthenia gravis. Although the prescribing information for mycophenolate mofetil reports depression as an adverse event, no descriptions of the onset or manifestation of this idiosyncratic reaction have been published. This case report describes a 64-year-old woman with myasthenia gravis who recei

Adjustment disorder (AD) with depressive features is a common but under researched diagnosis. There are particular problems associated with the diagnosis of AD using structured interviews and screening schedules have yet to be successfully developed owing to the poor specificity of those that are currently used. The problem of underdiagnosing AD due to symptom overlap with other disorders, on the one hand, and, on the other, the danger of pathologizing normal distress as AD are considered. The diagnosis of AD in practice is an exercise that requires clinical judgment concerning the context of

Cardiac vagal control, as measured by indices of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), has been investigated as a marker of impaired self-regulation in mental disorders, including depression. Past work in depressed samples has focused on deficits in resting RSA levels, with mixed results. This study tested the hypothesis that depression involves abnormal RSA fluctuation. RSA was measured in depressed and healthy control participants during rest and during two reactivity tasks, each followed by a recovery period. Relative to controls, depressed persons exhibited lower resting RSA levels as well a

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder is usually a recurring illness, and maintenance treatment is used to forestall or prevent recurrent episodes of depression. This study describes recurrence of major depression despite maintenance pharmacotherapy, termed tachyphylaxis.
METHOD: The study sample consisted of 103 subjects who participated in the NIMH Collaborative Depression Study, a multicenter longitudinal observational study of the mood disorders. Subjects diagnosed with unipolar major depressive disorder according to Research Diagnostic Criteria were enrolled from 1978-1981 and prospectiv

Depression is a relatively common health issue in children and adolescents. Different pathogenetic factors are implied: genetic, biological, psychological and environmental. The core symptoms of depression are the same for children, adolescents and adults but the prominence of characteristic symptoms changes with age. The clinical picture of depression according to age level is described in different types of mood disorders (major depressive disorder, dysthymia, bipolar disorder) and in mental retardation. Over half of the youths with depression have comorbid conditions: anxiety disorders, oth

Structured interviews were used to study rates of past suicide attempts among 123 outpatients treated for affective disorders. Subjects met the Feighner criteria for major affective illness, and bipolar and unipolar groups were identified in accordance with the Fieve-Dunner criteria. Although a small group (N = 6), the women with a history of hospitalization for depression and outpatient treatment for hypomania (BP II) had the highest rate of past suicide attempts. (66 percent). This confirms previous findings. Women showed higher rates overall (39 percent vs. 28 percent for men). Suicide atte

Mixed anxiety-depressive disorder (MADD) is a new diagnostic category defining patients who suffer from both anxiety and depressive symptoms of limited and equal intensity accompanied by at least some autonomic features. Patients do not meet the criteria for specific anxiety or depressive disorders. The emergence of the symptoms is independent of stressful life events. There are many issues presently under investigation about the validity of this clinical entity. In this study, a group of 29 patients with MADD was compared with a group of 31 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) to ass

Event centrality is defined by the extent to which a memory of an event has become central to an individual's identity and life story. Previous research predominantly focused on the link between event centrality and trauma-related symptomatology. Nevertheless, it can be argued that the perception of (adverse) events as central to one's self is not exclusive to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Other disorders where adverse events are linked to the onset of symptoms might also be related to event centrality. This study examined the relevance of event centrality for Social Anxiety Disorder (

OBJECTIVE: Compare patients diagnosed as DSM-5 type II bipolar disorder (BD2) vs. major depressive disorder (MDD).
METHODS: We compared characteristics of 3246 closely and repeatedly evaluated, consenting, adult patient-subjects (n = 706 BD2, 2540 MDD) at a specialty clinic using bivariate methods and multivariable modeling.
RESULTS: Factors more associated with BD2 than MDD included: [a] descriptors (more familial psychiatric, mood and bipolar disorders and suicide; younger at onset, diagnosis and first-treatment; more education; more unemployment; fewer marriages and children; higher cyclo

Introduction: Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD) is a nosological entity introduced with DSM-5, encompassing numerous different conditions including Dysthymia, recurrent Major Depressive Disorder, Double Depression and Chronic Major Depression. PDD is a particularly significant cause of disease burden in the general population. Areas covered: In the present paper, the authors explore the controversies surrounding the definition of PDD, the current approach to its treatment endorsed by the major scientific bodies, along with the available evidence on the efficacy of said treatments. AIM: To find if bipolar II disorder (BPII) and major depressive disorder (MDD) were distinct categories or overlapping syndromes.
METHODS: 308 BPII and 236 MDD outpatients, presenting for major depressive episode (MDE) treatment, were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. History of mania and hypomania, and hypomanic symptoms present during MDE, were systematically investigated. Presence of zones of rarity between BPII and MDD depressive syndromes was assessed. Atypical and hypomanic symptoms were chosen because atypical features and depressive mixed state (ie, MDE pl

BACKGROUND: Recent epidemiological/clinical studies have not found clear boundaries between bipolar II disorder (BP-II) and major depressive disorder (MDD), as subsyndromalhypomanic episodes were more common than syndromalhypomania. The aim of the study was to test if hypomania could still be used to split categorically BP-II and MDD.
METHODS: 274 consecutive remitted BP-II and 129 MDD outpatients were interviewed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV on the most common symptoms and duration of hypomanic episodes (lasting at least 2 days, having at least 2 symptoms), in a private pr

Studies in non-Hispanic whites have documented higher rates of hearing loss in adults with depression versus those without depression. Data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used to investigate associations between depression and bilateral hearing loss in Cuban-American, Mexican-American, and Puerto Rican adults 20-74 years of age. Pure tone thresholds were calculated by averaging thresholds obtained at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz separately for each ear. Hearing loss was defined as bilateral pure tone average threshold levels greater than 25 db. Lifetime history of a m

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the differences in gray matter volumes (GMVs) of subcortical nuclei between major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with and without persistent depressive disorder (PDD) at long-term follow-up.
METHODS: 114 and 94 subjects with MDD, including 48 and 41 with comorbid PDD, were enrolled to undergo high-resolution T1-weighted imaging at first (FIP) and second (three years later, SIP) investigation points, respectively. FreeSurfer was used to extract the GMVs of seven subcortical nuclei, and Generalized Estimating Equation models were employed to estimate t

INTRODUCTION: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a burdensome behavioral health condition that is costly and difficult to treat, particularly for patients with severe cases. The Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) has been shown to be effective for moderate depression treatment but less is known about its effectiveness for severe depression. This study analyzes the impact of CoCM treatment on outcomes for depression patients across all ranges of MDD severity at Concert Health.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analysis was completed utilizing all closed patient treatment episodes (N = 30,162) at Concert Hea

The heterogeneity of major depressive disorder (MDD) has hindered clinical translation and neuromarker identification. Biotyping facilitates solving the problems of heterogeneity, by dissecting MDD patients into discrete subgroups. However, interindividual variations suggest that depression may be conceptualized as a "continuum," rather than as a "category." We use a Bayesian model to decompose structural MRI features of MDD patients from a multisite cross-sectional cohort into three latent disease factors (spatial pattern) and continuum factor compositions (individual expression). The disease

BACKGROUND: Early neurodevelopmental deviations, such as abnormal cortical folding patterns, are candidate biomarkers of major depressive disorder (MDD). We aimed to investigate the association of MDD with the local gyrification index (LGI) in each cortical region at the whole-brain level, and the association of the LGI with clinical characteristics of MDD.
METHODS: We obtained T1-weighted images from 234 patients with MDD and 215 healthy controls (HCs). The LGI values from 66 cortical regions in the bilateral hemispheres were automatically calculated according to the Desikan-Killiany atlas.
