Phytophotodermatitis in Rijeka region, Croatia.

Contact with plants can cause phototoxic or rarely photoallergic reactions. Phototoxic dermatitis (photophytodermatitis) occurs after contact or ingestion of plants containing furocumarins i.e. psoralens and followed by sun exposure. Skin lesions develop usually after 24-48 hours with erythema, bulla formation, itch or pain, followed by a long lasting hyperpigmentation. Furocumarins can be linear i.e. psoralens (5-MOP, 8-MOP), or angular like angelicin and pimpinellin. Their binding to DNA causes cellular damage. This can happen in florists, gardeners, farmers, horticulturists, food handlers,

Phototoxic polyacetylenes and their thiophene derivatives. (Effects on human skin).

Polyacetylenes and their thiophene derivatives were tested for their effects on human skin. Topically applied alpha-terthienyl evoked bi-phasic phototoxic dermatitis and the appearance of 'sunburn' cells in human epidermis. None of 11 polyacetylenes had the same effect although they mimicked alpha-terthienyl in their phototoxic effects on Candida albicans and certain pathogenic microorganisms. The UV-mediated antibiotic activity of the compounds and their apparent lack of phototoxicity towards the skin suggest a potential topical therapeutic role for them in yeast, fungal and bacterial infecti

Evaluation of phototoxicity of tattoo pigments using the 3 T3 neutral red uptake phototoxicity test and a 3D human reconstructed skin model.

Phototoxicity due to dermally impregnated compounds exposed to ultraviolet radiation is associated with skin inflammation. The phototoxicity potential of active substances applied to the skin should be evaluated. Pigments are widely used for tattoos, and hypersensitivity reactions, such as photoallergic dermatitis, are possible tattoo-related complications. However, the phototoxicity of these chemicals is not well known. In this study, we evaluated the phototoxicity potential of six tattoo pigments, cadmium sulfide, carbazole, cadmium selenide, mercury (II) sulfide, chromium oxide, and cobalt

Phototoxicity occurring during the manufacture of ultraviolet-cured ink.

Four workers employed in the manufacture of ultraviolet-cured inks complained of photosensitivity characterized by an intense burning sensation during sun exposure. Three of these workers developed dermatitis on exposed areas following sun exposure. Six compounds used as photoinitiators in the ink formulations were found to absorb solar ultraviolet radiation. Two preparations of mixed isomers (ortho and para) of amyl dimethylaminobenzoate were found to be phototoxic to Ehrlich ascites cells in vitro and to produce diphasic phototoxic reactions in vivo after topical application on symptomatic w

In vitro phototoxicity of dihydropyridine derivatives: a photochemical and photobiological study.

Some photosensitizing drugs can cause phototoxic skin responses even after systemic administration; therefore, avoidance of undesired side-effects is a key consideration in drug discovery and development. As a prediction tool for phototoxic risk, we previously proposed the monitoring of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated from compounds irradiated with UVA/B, which can be effective for understanding photochemical/photobiological properties. In this investigation, we evaluated the photosensitizing properties of a novel dihydropyridine derivative, with bradykinin B(2) receptor antagonist act

Differentiation of hydrochlorothiazide-induced dermatitis from stasis dermatitis.

A woman in her 60s with a history of hypertension and stasis dermatitis presented to a primary care clinic with a bilateral, erythematous rash on the legs, stomach, and chest. Photosensitive rash and dermatitis may be caused by many conditions. Hydrochlorothiazide-induced dermatitis is a rare side effect of thiazide diuretics. Early identification of sulfa-sensitivity and photoallergic or phototoxic reaction is essential to accurate diagnosis and treatment of photosensitive dermatitis. Soliciting a targeted history is essential to delineating drug-induced dermatitis from stasis dermatitis. A t

Contact reactions to food.

Cutaneous adverse reactions to foods, spices, and food additives can occur both in occupational and nonoccupational settings in those who grow, handle, prepare, or cook food. Because spices are also utilized in cosmetics and perfumes, other exposures are encountered that can result in adverse cutaneous reactions. This article describes the reaction patterns that can occur upon contact with foods, including irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. The ingestion of culprit foods by sensitized individuals can provoke a generalized eczematous rash, referred to as systemic conta

Contact dermatitis to foods and spices.

Cutaneous reactions to foods and spices occur in both the workplace and at home in those who grow, handle, prepare, or cook food. As spices are also used in cosmetics and perfumes other exposures are found. Several patterns have been described upon contact with food including irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, phototoxic contact dermatitis, and protein contact dermatitis. The purpose of this article is to review the approach to a patient suspected of having a cutaneous reaction to food or spices, as well as discuss these reactions and the allergens tha

How to instruct patients sensitive to fragrances.

Patients who are sensitive to fragrances should either use fragrance-free cosmetics or undergo a repeat open application test to the cosmetic or perfume to determine sensitivity. Unusual reactions include systemic contact dermatitis due to balsam of Peru, benzyl alcohol, and menthol. Some responses involve pigmented eruptions due to phototoxic or photoallergic agents in perfumes and incense. Other reactions include consort dermatitis and reactions to toothpastes, gum and perfumes in paper products, sanitary napkins, ostomy pastes, and detergents.

Photosensitivity: results of investigation in 250 patients.

Between January 1972 and December 1974, 250 patients were referred for investigation of possible photosensitivity to a university-associated clinical research unit for photobiology. In addition to an appropriate history and clinical examination, phototesting was carried out with a solar simulator, monochromatic light and fluorescent light directed to patch-tested areas of skin. Photosensitivity was not demonstrated in 110 patients (44%). Among the laboratory-confirmed photosensitivities, diagnoses included polymorphous light eruption (4.4%), erythropoietic protoporphyria (3.6%), porphyria cuta

Tiaprofenic acid induced photosensitivity.

45 patients (34 patients with PLE, 11 with phototoxic or photoallergic dermatitis) were photopatch tested to tiaprofenic acid. In 23 patients (51%), phototoxic reactions were found. Positive reactions appeared within 0.5 to 48 h of irradiation. Although each patient was irradiated with 2 different UVA light sources, with significantly different energy outputs (10 J/cm2 against 72 J/cm2), the intensity and duration of positive reactions was virtually the same. We found a considerably higher rate of positive reactions than other investigators, independent of the light energy delivered. None of t

Analysis of photodermatoses seen in a predominantly Asian population at a photodermatology clinic in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: The idiopathic photodermatoses have been reported to be rarer in tropical Singapore than in countries of higher latitude, with photoaggravated dermatoses and systemic phototoxicity making up most of the photodermatoses seen here. This study aims to reassess the spectrum of photodermatoses seen at the National Skin Centre, Singapore, compared with almost a decade ago, and analyse the clinical and photobiological characteristics, as compared with other countries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the clinical data of 141 patients phototested from January 2000 to December 2001, and

Berloque dermatitis induced by "Florida water".

Phytophotodermatitis is a phototoxic dermatitis resulting from contact with psoralen-containing plants such as celery, limes, parsley, figs, and carrots. Berloque dermatitis is a variant of phytophotodermatitis and is caused by high concentrations of psoralen-containing fragrances, most commonly oil of bergamot. Berloque dermatitis is rarely seen today because of the removal of these fragrances from most cosmetic products in the United States. We report, however, a group of patients still at risk for berloque dermatitis. These patients use the colognes "Florida Water" and "Kananga Water," whic

Mangiferin and naringenin affect the photostability and phototoxicity of sunscreens containing avobenzone.

Efficient UV-absorbing molecules are designed to protect against UV-light exposure. However, the development of photostable sunscreens is important to preserve the photoprotective efficacy and to prevent the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and photodegradation products, which can promote phototoxic or photoallergic contact dermatitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of mangiferin and naringenin on the photostability and phototoxicity of sunscreens containing avobenzone. Cosmetic sunscreen formulations containing octocrylene (OCT), octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC) and a

Chlorpromazine photoallergy. Coexistence of immediate and delayed type.

A 54-year-old woman had a recurrent pruritic eruption in light-exposed areas. She had a combination of three types of hypersensitivity to chlorpromazine, ie, allergic contact dermatitis, photocontact dermatitis, and immediate allergic photosensitivity. Immediate wheal reactions were found after long-wave ultraviolet light irradiation at photopatch test and intradermal injection sites with chlorpromazine. These responses were differentiated from phototoxic reactions. A positive passive transfer reaction was also observed. To my knowledge, chlorpromazine photosensitivity of the immediate type ha

Disabling work-related persistent photosensitivity following photoallergic contact dermatitis from chlorpromazine and olaquindox in a pig breeder.

The use of veterinary medicines and medicated feed has a potential for the exposure of agricultural workers to pharmaceuticals with phototoxic and photoallergic side-effects. We present a 67-year-old self-employed farmer and pig breeder with a 22-year history of severe persistent photosensitivity following photoallergic contact dermatitis due to direct occupational dermal and airborne contact to chlorpromazine (sedative) and olaquindox (antibiotic and animal growth promoter, AGP). His first dermatitis symptoms appeared at the age of 45 when the pig breeding was intensified. He showed erythemat
