[Etiologic and epidemiologic study of dermatomycoses in Navarra (Spain)].

We review the etiology of the dermatophytosis in Navarra (Spain) over a 5-year period and it is compared with previous studies. We have isolated 312 strains of dermatophyte fungi in 285 patients (188 men and 97 women). Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequently isolated species (58.6%) followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes (26.2%) and Microsporum canis (10.5%). Concerning the location of the lesions, tinea pedis was the clinical pattern found in the greatest number of patients, followed by tinea corporis, tinea unguium and tinea capitis. Twenty eight percent of the isolations were accomplis

[Atypical dermatomycoses in children as seen in personal observations].

15 cases of cutaneous fungal infection in children with nontypical clinical findings have been presented. The fungal infections simulated other skin diseases particularly atopic dermatitis in 6 cases, diaper dermatitis in 4 cases and in single cases psoriasis, impetigo, purpura, eczema and exudative multiforme erythema. Mycotic examinations have confirmed the fungal character of lesions. The specific treatment resulted in the complete cure of the skin lesions.

Nomenclatural Changes of Fungal Pathogens Causing Dermatomycoses.

With advances in molecular biology, the recognition of fungal species has been revised, and the nomenclature systems themselves have been changed to adopt the "one-fungus-one-name" concept, resulting in the names of many species being changed in recent years. This article provides an overview of recent changes in the names of fungi associated with skin diseases, with a particular focus on Malassezia species, some Trichophyton species including Trichophyton benhamiae and Trichophyton indotineae, along with several species causing deep dermatomycoses.

Childhood dermatomycoses study in Sfax Hospital, Tunisia.

Mycoses are frequent affections in childhood. Fungal type varies according to the age and the affected organ. The aim of this study was to determine the aetiological agents of childhood dermatomycoses and to draw attention to the diversity of their clinical manifestations. Retrospective study dealing with children's cases with age <16-year old and having dermatomycosis diagnosed between 1991 and 2005 at the Parasitology and Mycology Laboratory of Sfax University Hospital. A total of 4559 children suspected to have superficial mycoses were examined. Dermatomycosis diagnosis was confirmed in 49.

[Dermatomycoses due to pets and farm animals : neglected infections?].

Dermatomycoses due to contact with pets and livestock frequently affect children and young adults. Zoophilic dermatophytes are the main important causative agents. It has long been known that the often high inflammatory dermatophytoses of the skin and the scalp are caused mostly by Microsporum canis. Due to an absence of an obligation for reporting fungal infections of the skin to the Public Health Office in Germany, an unnoticed but significant change in responsible pathogens has occurred. Today an increasing number of infections due to zoophilic strains of Trichophyton interdigitale (formerl

Dermatomycoses caused by Nattrassia mangiferae in São Paulo, Brazil.

Nattrassia mangiferae formerly known as Hendersonula toruloidea, is a phaeoid coelomycete described by Nattrass in 1933. We report five cases of N. mangiferae infections in São Paulo, Brazil. This fungus was isolated from interdigital lesions on the feet in one patient, toenails in three cases and fingernails in the other one. The infections were initially considered to be caused by a dermatophyte. Although there are only a few cases described in the medical literature, the five cases reported suggest that N. mangiferae should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of tinea

Dermatomycoses among industrial workers in Cross River State, Nigeria.

A survey of dermatomycoses was carried out amongst industrial workers in three different factories during the period 1987-1988. A total of 194 workers were screened, out of which 54 proved to be mycologically positive by microscopy and/or culture. Incidence was apparently highest amongst workers in a cement factory (Calcemco, 33.3%) followed by those in a wood factory (Seromwood, 30.8%) and a rubber factory (CREL, 26.2%). Pityriasis versicolor was the predominant clinical type of dermatomycosis, followed by tinea pedis. A total of 51 fungal organisms were identified. Malassezia furfur was the

[Clinical picture, causative agents and diagnostics of dermatomycoses].

Dermatomycoses affect free skin, hairy scalp, fingernails and toenails. In addition, oral mucosa and genital mucosa can also be affected by fungal infections. The most common pathogens causing skin fungal infections are dermatophytes. They are responsible for, among others, tinea corporis, tinea capitis and onychomycosis (tinea unguium). Mainly anthropophilic dermatophytes are found as pathogens. In the case of tinea capitis-at least in Europe and in German-speaking countries-zoophilic skin fungi must also be considered. Rarely, geophilic dermatophytes can also be isolated. Yeast infections of

Mycological Pattern of Dermatomycoses in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Background. Dermatomycoses are not diseases requiring compulsory notifications; rather they cause cosmetic defacements. Indian subcontinent with a varied topography is favorable for various fungal infections. Objective. To look for the epidemiological and mycological profile of superficial mycoses in North India. Methods. Three hundred and fifty-one clinical samples of skin, hair, and nail were examined to find the fungal etiology of the dermatomycoses. Results. Dermatomycoses were seen in 215/351 (61.2%) of cases. Most common isolates obtained were nondermatophyte molds (NDMs) (36.1%), follow

Epidemiological and clinical pattern of dermatomycoses in rural India.

Superficial fungal infections are most common in tropical and subtropical countries. In this study, 297 suspected superficial fungal infection cases were identified among 15,950 patients screened. The collected samples (skin, nail, and hair) were subjected to direct microscopy with potassium hydroxide and cultured on Sabourauds dextrose agar to identify the fungal species. The prevalence of superficial fungal infection was 27.6% (82/297), dermatophytosis was 75.6% (62/82), and non-dermatophytosis was 24.4% (20/82). Among the isolated dermatophytes, Trichophyton rubrum was the commonest species

Comparison of diagnostic methods in the diagnosis of dermatomycoses and onychomycoses.

Direct microscopic examination of potassium hydroxide (KOH)-prepared specimens is the simplest, cheapest method used for the diagnosis of mycotic infections of the skin. However, KOH preparations have been reported to have 5-15% of false-negative results, possibly because of the low visibility of scant, scattered fungal material of the nail scrapings and because the detection of fungal elements depends on the skill of the observer [Arch Dermatol133 (1997) 1317; Clin Microbiol Rev8 (1995) 240]. We compared two different KOH-based staining methods in order to obtain reliable results in shorter t

Analysis of dermatomycoses in Lanzhou district of northwestern China.

The skin mycoses, perticularly dermatophytoses, in Lanzhou district, Northwestern China, was investigated during July 2002-June 2003. The specimens from patients suspected of having dermatomycoses were examined microscopically in KOH preparations and cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA). Among 1443 suspected cases, 594 were KOH positive and 221 cultures of fungi were isolated. The most frequently isolated fungi were Trichophyton rubrum (43.9%) Trichophyton mentagrophytes (29.4%) and Candida species (14.0%). The frequency of tinea pedis, onychomycosis and tinea manuum were 38.7, 27.8 and 1

Concomitant otomycosis and dermatomycoses: a clinical and microbiological study.

Otomycosis tends to recur despite long-term treatment. To our knowledge, there is no study in the English literature concerning the clinical importance of concomitant otomycosis and dermatomycoses. We investigated the presence of dermatomycoses in 52 patients with otomycosis in order to document the clinical and microbiological importance of their coexistence. Dermatomycoses on the feet and/or hands were identified in 19 patients (36.5%). The most common pathogen for otomycosis was Aspergillus niger, while it was Candida albicans for the dermatomycoses. The same pathogenic fungi were isolated

Itraconazole pulse therapy for onychomycosis and dermatomycoses: an overview.

BACKGROUND: Itraconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent that has been used to treat dermatomycosis and onychomycosis using continuous therapy. More recently the drug has been used as pulse dosing. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to review the studies in which itraconazole pulse therapy (PT) has been administered in the management of dermatomycoses. RESULTS: For tinea pedis and manuum, the recommended dosage is itraconazole 200 mg twice daily for 1 week (n = 220). A clinical response and mycologic cure rate of 90% +/- 4% and 76% +/- 6%, respectively, has been obtained. For tinea corporis/cru
