Adaptation and Response in Drylands: A Dryland Research Agenda and Campaign Strategy.

Dryland ecosystems cover 41% of Earth's land surfaces, account for 44% of cultivated lands and 60% of food sources, and make large contributions to the global water and carbon cycles. However, these ecosystems are experiencing unprecedented extremes including heatwaves, floods, and droughts as well as hotter temperatures and often declining water resource availability. These ecosystems are some of the most challenging to monitor given their high temporal variability with rapid response to their environment as well as vast spatial variability with intermixing of different plant species and life

Ecosystem services provided by native xerophytic vegetation in the desert macrozone of northern Chile: a baseline for environmental monitoring in arid lands.

This study provides the first systematic inventory of ecosystem services supplied by native xerophytic vegetation across the northern macrozone of Chile (Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá and Antofagasta regions) by integrating literature review (71 documents) and expert knowledge (10 specialists). The identified services-predominantly provision (especially medicinal plants), cultural (indigenous identity and traditional practices) and regulating (soil stabilization, microclimate regulation)-are linked to more than 100 native species, many of them threatened. The resulting baseline constitutes a

Unravelling Changes in the Pinus radiata Root and Soil Microbiomes as a Function of Aridity.

Increased aridity is emerging as a key impact of climate change in terrestrial ecosystems globally. Forest biomes are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of changing environmental conditions due to their long-lived and sessile nature. Microbiomes have coevolved with plants under changing environmental conditions with shared fitness outcomes. However, both the movement of plants via domestication and rapid pace of environmental change may impact the ability of plants to recruit microbial symbionts that support environmental stress tolerance. This study investigates the effects of aridity on

Desert dust, sandstorms, and infectious diseases: A scoping review.

Desert dust and sandstorms influence air quality by elevating particulate matter concentrations and transporting anthropogenic pollutants, microorganisms, and toxic biogenic allergens. Although there is increasing concern about their role in spreading infectious diseases, the evidence remains limited. This scoping review synthesizes epidemiological literature on the association between desert dust exposure and infectious disease and identifies critical research gaps. A bibliographic search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Scopus up to December 2024, following Joanna Briggs

Spatiotemporal variations of internal dust events in urban environments of Iran, Southwest Asia.

This article investigates the Dust Storm Index (DSI) and its trend using the Mann-Kendall test, across urban areas of Iran on the monthly, seasonally, and annually scales from 2000 to 2018. The results showed that cities located in the humid region, especially Khoram Abad and Avaj, had the lowest DSI values, and the cities located in arid regions, particularly Zabol, Sarakhs, and Zahedan, had the highest DSI values during the study period. On a monthly basis, the positive trends were observed in most cities of Iran in March, October, and August, while the negative trends were mainly observed i

Effects of soil moisture, net radiation, and atmospheric vapor pressure deficit on surface evaporation fraction at a semi-arid grass site.

Surface energy partitioning is one of the most important aspects of the land-atmosphere coupling. The objective of this study is to examine how soil moisture (SM) and atmospheric conditions (net radiation, Rn and vapor pressure deficit, VPD) affect surface evaporation fraction (EF, determined by LE/(LE + H), where LE and H are latent and sensible heat flux, respectively) with measurements at a semi-arid grass site in China during the mid-growing season, 2020. The three factors (SM, Rn, and VPD) were divided into different levels, and then their effects on EF were investigated qualitatively usi

Diversity and Community Composition of Vertebrates in Desert River Habitats.

Animal species are seldom distributed evenly at either local or larger spatial scales, and instead tend to aggregate in sites that meet their resource requirements and maximise fitness. This tendency is likely to be especially marked in arid regions where species could be expected to concentrate at resource-rich oases. In this study, we first test the hypothesis that productive riparian sites in arid Australia support higher vertebrate diversity than other desert habitats, and then elucidate the habitats selected by different species. We addressed the first aim by examining the diversity and c

The potential of multilayer green roofs for stormwater management in urban area under semi-arid Mediterranean climate conditions.

Different low impact development measures have been proposed to make cities more flood-resilient, and recent literature is paying great attention to the evaluation of their direct benefits in terms of flood risk mitigation and the numerous co-benefits that they may offer. This study describes an experimental prototype of a technologically advanced multilayer green roof installed in a Mediterranean urban area (i.e., Palermo, Italy) and explores the results of an analysis of data collected over a one-year monitoring period by a complex sensors network. Multilayer green roofs, or "blue-green" roo

Quadrat-based monitoring of desert grassland vegetation at the Jornada Experimental Range, New Mexico, 1915-2016.

The data set covers a 101-yr period (1915-2016) of quadrat-based plant sampling at the Jornada Experimental Range in southern New Mexico. At each sampling event, a pantograph was used to record the location and perimeter of living plants within permanent quadrats. Basal area was recorded for perennial grass species, canopy cover area was recorded for shrub species, and all other perennial species were recorded as point data. The data set includes 122 1 × 1 m permanent quadrats, although not all quadrats were sampled in each year of the study and there is a gap in monitoring from 1980 to 1995.

Spatial analysis of visceral leishmaniasis in the oases of the plains of Kashi Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China.

BACKGROUND: Kashi Prefecture of Xinjiang is one of the most seriously affected areas with anthroponotic visceral leishmaniasis in China. A better understanding of space distribution features in this area was needed to guide strategies to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis from highly endemic areas. We performed a spatial analysis using the data collected in Bosh Klum Township in Xinjiang China. METHODS: Based on the report of endemic diseases between 1990 and 2005, three villages with a high number of visceral leishmaniasis cases in Bosh Klum Township were selected. We conducted a household sur

INSIG1 parallel substitution drives lipid/sterol metabolic plasticity mediating desert adaptation in ungulates.

Desert ungulates, such as Camelus bactrianus and Hippotraginae antelopes, exhibit extraordinary adaptation to extreme environment. Deciphering these genetic adaptations is critical for understanding evolutionary resilience under climate change. Here, we generate a chromosome-level genome for domestic Bactrian camel and integrate comparative genomics analyses to uncover genomic adaptation in arid-desert ungulates. We find elevated molecular evolution rates with intensified positive selection among desert-adapted lineages. Convergent positively selected genes are mainly involved in energy metabo

Physiology and the future of animals in shifting-sand deserts: living, moving and thermoregulating in the sand.

The conservation of the animals of the shifting-sand deserts requires a thorough understanding of the physiological mechanisms that not only enable them to function in the desert, but also may buffer them against future change. The animals there contend with little water and poor food resources. The animals of shifting-sand deserts also must move on and in loose sand and cannot construct unsupported burrows. Most are invertebrates, but the deserts also are home to many vertebrate species, mainly lizards. We describe the biomechanics of their locomotion on and in the sand. Some are quiescent bu

Accessibility and surface area drive desert toad presence at artificial water sites in the Great Basin and Mojave Deserts.

Artificial Water Sites (AWS) are human-made or modified water sources constructed or maintained for livestock, select wildlife game species, or other management purposes in arid environments. However, non-target species such as desert toads have been documented utilizing AWS. Because the reproductive ecology of desert toads relies on water, understanding factors explaining their presence at AWS can inform conservation practices. To address this lack of information, we examined how AWS design, spatial isolation, local terrain, and surrounding vegetation influenced toad presence in the Great Bas

Integrating systematic review and Bayesian weighting to derive a minimum dataset for soil health assessment in arid and semi-arid regions.

Soil health assessment in arid and semi-arid regions necessitates strong frameworks capable of combining a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological indicators. This study systematically analyzed 141 manuscripts to establish a Minimum Dataset of soil health indicators and to refine their relative importance through a Bayesian weighting approach. The selection methodology yielded a core collection of six physical, four chemical, and two biological indicators. Since each of the 141 studies considered reports its own subset of soil health indicators, not a common and homogeneous set shared

Illegal dumping of oil and gas wastewater alters arid soil microbial communities.

The Permian Basin, underlying southeast New Mexico and west Texas, is one of the most productive oil and gas (OG) provinces in the United States. Oil and gas production yields large volumes of wastewater with complex chemistries, and the environmental health risks posed by these OG wastewaters on sensitive desert ecosystems are poorly understood. Starting in November 2017, 39 illegal dumps, as defined by federal and state regulations, of OG wastewater were identified in southeastern New Mexico, releasing ~600,000 L of fluid onto dryland soils. To evaluate the impacts of these releases, we anal

Actinomycetes isolates of arid zone of Indian Thar Desert and efficacy of their bioactive compounds against human pathogenic bacteria.

Twenty-six morphotypes of actinomycetes bacteria were isolated from the soils of arid zone of Indian Thar desert, Rajasthan. A significant and positive correlation was found between density of actinomycetes isolates and availability of nitrogen in sandy soil of arid zone suggesting the influence of soil nitrogen on occurrence and propagation of actinomycetes in this region. Molecular identification based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the bacterial isolates belong to four actinomycetes genera, viz. Streptomyces (22 species), Nocardiopsis (two species), Saccharomonospora (one species
