PURPOSE: Glaucomatous optic neuropathy is characterized by remodeling of the extracellular matrix with disorganization of elastic fibers in the optic nerve head (ONH). There are significant differences in prevalence of glaucomatous optic neuropathy between African Americans (AAs) and Caucasian Americans (CAs). The goal of this study was to evaluate differences in elastin synthesis and maturation in ONH tissue and cells of AA and CA donors with no eye disease, to provide a basis for underlying racial differences in susceptibility to elevated intraocular pressure.

The global burden of schistosomiasis is significant, with fibrosis a major associated morbidity and the primary cause of mortality. Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) continues uninterrupted. Pre-exposure vaccination remains a central focus of tuberculosis research but 25 years of follow up is needed to determine whether a novel childhood vaccination regime protects from adult disease, or like BCG assists Mtb dissemination by preventing childhood illness but not infective adult pulmonary tuberculosis. Therefore, different strategies to interrupt the life cycle of Mtb need to be explored. This personal perspective discusses alternative approaches that may be delivered in a shorter time frame.

Combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) is a distinct syndrome associated with heavy smoking. The fibrotic component of the disease is generally believed to be superimposed on previously existing pulmonary emphysema, but the mechanisms responsible for these changes remain poorly understood. Nine patients with moderate pulmonary emphysema, six of PiZ phenotype and three of PiM phenotype, have received a single intravenous infusion of alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor (human) (A1PI), in a dose of 60 mg/kg over a 30-minute period. We report the results of biochemical and morphometric studies on lungs of infants with bilateral lung hypoplasia either with or without oligohydramnios (OH or NOH) in comparison with findings in normally grown lungs.
