A comparison of photographic, replication and direct clinical examination methods for detecting developmental defects of enamel.

BACKGROUND: Different methods have been used for detecting developmental defects of enamel (DDE). This study aimed to compare photographic and replication methods with the direct clinical examination method for detecting DDE in children's permanent incisors. METHODS: 110 8-10-year-old schoolchildren were randomly selected from an examined sample of 335 primary Shiraz school children. Modified DDE index was used in all three methods. Direct examinations were conducted by two calibrated examiners using flat oral mirrors and tongue blades. Photographs were taken using a digital SLR camera (Nikon

Prevalence of developmental enamel defects of the first permanent molars among school children in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of enamel defects in the first permanent molars among children has been reported to be high and may be on the increase, particularly in the European countries. Little information is available on the prevalence of enamel defects in the first permanent molars among children in Australia. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of enamel defects in the first permanent molars among school children in Western Australia. METHODS: Informed consent was obtained from parents of children attending pre-primary schools within an administrative area of the School De

Developmental enamel defects in primary teeth in children with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, or hearing defects: a review.

Developmental enamel defects in primary teeth have been found at least twice as frequently in children with cerebral palsy or mental retardation as in control children, and frequently also in children with sensori-neural hearing deficits. The developing tooth germ is sensitive to a range of systemic disturbances, some of which may also affect neurologic development. Because the enamel cannot recover once it is damaged, it may provide a repository of information on the timing and nature of insults potentially affecting other ectodermally derived structures, including the brain. Developmental enamel defects and dental anomalies of number and size in children with growth hormone deficiency.

Growth hormone is meaningfully involved in the processes of tooth cells differentiation and tissue formation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the occurrence of dental anomalies: microdontia, macrodontia, hypodontia and developmental defects of enamel (DDE) amongst a group of isolated growth hormone deficient (GHD) patients and healthy children. This cross-sectional study was based on a group of 101 Caucasian children: 33 with GHD (mean age 10.94, SD 2.51) and 68 being healthy, normal height subjects (mean age 10.4, SD 2.38). The dental examination in primary and permanent teeth was carrie

Developmental defects of enamel and dentin in individuals born preterm: a scoping review of evidence and mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (<37 weeks of gestation) occurs during critical stages of odontogenesis and is associated with developmental defects in dental hard tissues. Enamel hypoplasia, enamel hypomineralization, and structural dentin alterations may compromise esthetics, function, and long-term oral health outcomes. However, the nature and extent of these defects and their underlying mechanisms have not been comprehensively investigated. OBJECTIVE: To map and evaluate the available evidence regarding developmental defects of enamel and dentin in individuals born preterm, identify proposed pa

Influence of Vitamin D on Developmental Defects of Enamel (DDE) in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: This systematic review aims to investigate the potential association between vitamin D levels and the occurrence of developmental enamel defects (DDE) in children, including conditions like molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and hypomineralized second primary molars (HSPMs). DDEs, which occur during tooth development, can result in significant aesthetic and functional issues, and their exact etiology remains unclear, with both genetic and environmental factors contributing. Among environmental factors, vitamin D deficiency has been proposed as a possible risk factor,

Prevalence and distribution of developmental enamel defects in primary dentition of Chinese children 3-5 years old.

A total of 1344 children, 3-5 yr old, from two rural counties, Haidian and Miyun, close to Beijing, China, were examined in 1992. A modified DDE Index was employed in this study, and a pre-designed formula was used to calculate an enamel defect score (EDS) for each individual in the study. Oral examination was performed by one dentist under natural light using a standard mouth mirror and dental probe. Developmental enamel lesions were diagnosed without drying or cleaning the teeth prior to examination. Results from this study showed that primary teeth with defective enamel were seen in 23.9% o

The prevalence of developmental defects of enamel in a cohort of adults with cystic fibrosis - A cross sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Cystic Fibrosis is an autosomal recessive condition. It is a multisystem disease treated with a broad range of pharmacological therapies, diet and nutrition, and physiotherapy. Previous studies suggest that people with cystic fibrosis have a higher prevalence of developmental defects of enamel which may place this population at a greater risk of developing oral diseases such as caries. The aim of this study was to assess a cohort of people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) for the presence of developmental defects of enamel and compare the results with a control group of people without c

Developmental defects of enamel in children of Davangere District and their relationship to fluoride levels in drinking water.

To assess the prevalence and severity of developmental defects and their relationship to fluoride levels in drinking water. 739 (406 male and 333 female) schoolchildren aged 13 years formed the study population. We used the ion selective electrode method to estimate the fluoride concentration in drinking water. A modified developmental defects of enamel index was used for recording the developmental defects. The Karl Pearson coefficient for correlation and the chi-square test were used for statistical estimation. The fluoride concentration ranged from 0.64 to 2.64 ppm. The prevalence of develo

Evidence on the association of overall dietary factors, selected environmental, medical, demographic, and biological factors and developmental defects of enamel, including MIH and enamel fluorosis.

INTRODUCTION: Developmental defects of enamel (DDE) encompass a spectrum of conditions that occur during tooth formation, including enamel fluorosis, molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH), and other forms of enamel hypoplasia. It has been proposed that DDE are associated with nutritional deficiencies as well as environmental exposures during tooth development. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review summarized and analyzed the evidence on the association between dietary habits, environmental exposures, medical/health-related factors, demographic factors and biological factors and DDE aiming to provid

The production of developmental defects of enamel in the incisor teeth of penned sheep resulting from induced parasitism.

Thirty-four sheep were infected with nematode parasites (Trichostrongylus spp. and Ostertagia circumcincta) during central incisor formation. The tooth enamel was examined for defects of mineralization at eruption and compared with that of 14 control sheep. The type and number of parasites given, the duration of the infection and the age of the sheep were varied. Sheep receiving high doses of parasites e.g. 200,000 T. vitrinus + 20,000 O. circumcincta showed severe systemic effects (debilitation, scouring and weight loss) which were of short duration (7-10 days) as the infections were terminat
