A developmental study of learning disabilities and memory.

Seven-, ten-, and thirteen-year-old learning-disabled (LD) and non-learning-disabled (NORM) children were presented specially structured lists of 38 words each and tested for free recall. Each list contained only four semantically related words. Two of the four related words were presented contiguously (serial positions 9 and 10) and the other two words were spaced (serial positions 20 and 30). All children recalled disproportionately more adjacent words (item 9 or 10) than any other words. Spaced words (items 20 and 30) were less likely to be recalled by the younger children than by the older

Family developmental risk factors among adolescents with disabilities and children of parents with disabilities.

This paper investigates how the learning environments and family dynamics differ if households have a child with a disability or a parent with a disability. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, results indicate that children with disabilities experience similar learning environments as other children, but have somewhat weaker relationships with their parents. In two-parent families, maternal disability lowers parents' school involvement and is associated with a less enriching home environment. Paternal disability reduces maternal monitoring and positive family activi

The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 expands employment opportunities for persons with developmental disabilities.

The primary purpose of the ADA is the full inclusion of persons with disabilities within their communities. The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in the areas of employment, transportation, public accommodations, telecommunications, and state and local government agencies. The person described in this report encountered some of this discrimination. He successfully obtained paid community-integrated employment only after overcoming major obstacles and barriers, the greatest being transportation. In our highly mobile society, reliable transportation is essential for the acq

Dental fellowships in developmental disabilities help broaden care of disabled.

Continuation of the national trend toward deinstitutionalization and community placement for persons with developmental disabilities, physical handicaps and other medical problems will mean increased demand for dentists trained to care for this segment of the population. The New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities now offers dental fellowships in developmental disabilities to help fill the learning gap.

Attitudes on Palliative Care for Adults with Developmental Disabilities.

Background: Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) are defined as physical/mental impairments before age 18. Not only are many IDD patients living into adulthood, but deinstitutionalization has also led to most living in community settings. Little is known about end-of-life needs in these adults, and existing literature does not examine attitudes of Canadian providers. Objective: Thematic and content analysis examined attitudes of Canadian Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC) practitioners on caring for adults with IDD to identify components of care, which could be improved. Design: An a

Factors associated with bruxism in children with developmental disabilities.

The aim of the present study was to investigate factors associated with bruxism in children aged from 1 to 13 years with developmental disabilities. A total of 389 dental records were examined. The bruxism analyzed was determined based on parental reports. The following variables were also analyzed: gender, age, International Code of Diseases (ICD), mouth breathing, history of gastroesophageal reflux, use of psychotropic drugs, gingival status, reports of xerostomia, hyperkinesis, pacifier use, thumb sucking and involuntary movements. For the purposes of analysis, the individuals were categori

Pulmonary care of children and adolescents with developmental disabilities.

Caring for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities is challenging because of their susceptibility to varying degrees of respiratory morbidity and mortality. This article discusses the common pulmonary problems affecting children with developmental disabilities. Topics to be discussed include gastroesophageal reflux, drooling, and dysphagia and their relation to aspiration and aspiration pneumonia, upper airway obstruction and obstructive sleep apnea, and the role of airway clearance. Case studies are used to introduce a discussion of the underlying etiology, currently accepted

The epidemiology of developmental disabilities in low-income countries.

Although most of the world's children live in developing countries and may be at high risk for disability, very little is known about the prevalence and causes of developmental disabilities in these countries. This paper discusses methodological difficulties contributing to this lack of knowledge, and provides an overview of what is known about the epidemiology of developmental disabilities in low-income countries. At least some forms of developmental disability appear to be more common in low-income countries than in wealthier countries, despite the probability of higher mortality among child

Nursing care of children with developmental disabilities having surgery.

Children with developmental disabilities (CWDD) who undergo surgery have special needs. The nurse is required to make accurate assessments of the intellectual, psychosocial, and physical state of the child as well as the emotional functioning of the family. The nurse must be aware of the legal implications and his/her own attitudes regarding CWDD. Parents must be accepted as partners with the health care team and open communication should be established. Special concerns for the health care team are latex allergy and malignant hyperthermia. Nursing Care Plans specific to the child with pain, e

The Mini Mental State in those with developmental disabilities.

The Mini Mental State Examination is a useful screen for the detection of cognitive disorders among psychiatric patients. In the absence of a developmental disability, the inability to perform satisfactorily on the Mini Mental State (MMS) (score less than 24) is likely to be related to delirium, dementia, or affective disorders. The mildly retarded or learning disabled should perform satisfactorily (greater than 24) on the MMS but may show impairment with delirium, dementia, or affective disorders. In the absence of a psychiatric disorder, it takes moderate mental retardation (IQ less than 55)

Fathers' experiences of caring for children with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Although caregiving for children with developmental disabilities has been widely examined, fathers' experiences remain relatively underexplored. This qualitative descriptive study explored fathers' caregiving experiences in the context of children with developmental disabilities, focusing on psychological, social, economic, and systemic dimensions of caregiving and fathers' coping and adaptation processes. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 19 fathers of children diagnosed with develo

Polypharmacy in a Patient With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is an uncommon condition and its clinical manifestation in adulthood includes central obesity, hypogonadism, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and sleep apnea. These patients often have mild to moderate intellectual disability and are dependent upon their caregiver for healthcare needs. Hence, they may be at increased risk of polypharmacy-related complications, if there is poor communication between healthcare providers and caregivers. We present a case of a 26-year-old adult with PWS and mild to moderate intellectual disability, who was found

Newborn Auditory Brainstem Responses in Children with Developmental Disabilities.

We integrated data from a newborn hearing screening database and a preschool disability database to examine the relationship between newborn click evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and developmental disabilities. This sample included children with developmental delay (n = 2992), speech impairment (SI, n = 905), language impairment (n = 566), autism spectrum disorder (ASD, n = 370), and comparison children (n = 128,181). We compared the phase of the ABR waveform, a measure of sound processing latency, across groups. Children with SI and children with ASD had greater newborn ABR phase v

Serious Game-based Intervention for Children with Developmental Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental disabilities may need support with motor skills such as balance improvement, cognitive skills such as vocabulary learning, or social skills such as adequate interpretation of emotional expressions. Digital interactive games could support the standard treatments. We aimed to review clinical studies which investigated the application of serious games in children with developmental disabilities. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE and Scopus on 05 May 2019 limited to the English language. We included people between two and 24 years of age who were affected by neu

Quality of diabetes care for adults with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Given that individuals with developmental disabilities have a history of difficulty accessing appropriate health care, possess numerous risk factors for diabetes, and frequently have unique needs within the health care setting, it is important to conduct surveillance research to determine the quality of their diabetes care. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We assessed the quality of diabetes care for adults with developmental disabilities enrolled in Kansas Medicaid. Developmental disability was defined in accordance with Kansas Medicaid program eligibility and included individuals with inte

Use of psychotropic medications in children with developmental disabilities.

Working with children who have developmental disorders is challenging. Besides having physical deficits, or intellectual deficits, or both, these children are at high risk for developing psychiatric disorders. This article describes three developmental disorders-autistic spectrum disorders, fragile X syndrome, and fetal alcohol syndrome-and their associated mental health issues, and provides recommendations for pharmacologic interventions.
