Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a common form of cardiomyopathy that affects the cardiac muscle. It is a life-threatening condition that causes heart failure as it decreases the myocardial ability to pump sufficient blood throughout the body. Numerous causes trigger DCM without pathophysiology; however, the key concept is a decrease in the systolic function of either the left ventricle or of both the left and right ventricles. Long-term diabetes plays an important role in the pathogenesis of DCM in the form of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a non-ischemic form of DCM, whic

Diabetes increases the risk of heart failure approximately 2.5-fold, independent of coronary artery disease and other comorbidities. This process, termed diabetic cardiomyopathy, is characterized by initial impairment of left ventricular (LV) relaxation followed by LV contractile dysfunction. Post-mortem examination reveals that human diastolic dysfunction is closely associated with LV damage, including cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, apoptosis and fibrosis, with impaired coronary microvascular perfusion. The pathophysiological mechanisms underpinning the characteristic features of diabetic cardiom

Systemic changes during diabetes such as high glucose, dyslipidemia, hormonal changes and low grade inflammation, are believed to induce structural and functional changes in the cardiomyocyte associated with the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. One of the hallmarks of the diabetic heart is increased oxidative stress. NADPH-oxidases (NOXs) are important ROS-producing enzymes in the cardiomyocyte mediating both adaptive and maladaptive changes in the heart. NOXs have been suggested as a therapeutic target for several diabetic complications, but their role in diabetic cardiomyopathy is far

Diabetic cardiomyopathy entails a serious cardiac dysfunction induced by alterations in structure and contractility of the myocardium. This pathology is initiated by changes in energy substrates and occurs in the absence of atherothrombosis, hypertension, or other cardiomyopathies. Inflammation, hypertrophy, fibrosis, steatosis, and apoptosis in the myocardium have been studied in numerous diabetic experimental models in animals, mostly rodents. Type I and type II diabetes were induced by genetic manipulation, pancreatic toxins, and fat and sweet diets, and animals recapitulate the main featur

Diabetic patients show a higher incidence of cardiac arrhythmias, including ventricular fibrillation and sudden death. However, although diabetic cardiomyopathy is a frequent and important complication of diabetes mellitus, its physiological basis is not completely known. The electrocardiogram of diabetic patients shows several alterations from normal patterns, most of them related to the QT interval and T wave. Recently, different alterations in cardiac ionic currents have been described in myocytes isolated from diabetic hearts, mainly a reduction in potassium repolarizing currents. Three di

Cardiac involvement and its clinical course in a diabetic patient with a mitochondrial tRNA(Leu)(UUR) mutation at position 3243 is reported in a 54-year-old man with no history of hypertension. At age 46, an electrocardiogram showed just T wave abnormalities. At age 49, it fulfilled SV1 + RV5 or 6>35 mm with strain pattern. At age 52, echocardiography revealed definite left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, and abnormally increased mitochondria were shown in biopsied endomyocardial specimens. He was diagnosed as having developed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy associated with the mutation. However, at

Diabetes appears to cause a cardiomyopathy independent of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease and hypertension. Left ventricular papillary muscle function studies in rats made severely diabetic with streptozotocin have shown a slowing of relaxation and a depression of shortening velocity. However, the effects of insulin therapy on the myocardial mechanics of diabetic rats have not been studied. Therefore, rats diabetic for 6-10 weeks were treated with PZI insulin for 2, 6, 10, or 28 days and the mechanical performance of their left ventricular papillary muscles was compared to that of untr

A transient form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has been previously described in infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs). The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence, natural history and pathologic features of this cardiomyopathy in symptomatic and asymptomatic IDMs. We studied 47 IDMs for evidence of cardiomyopathy. Among 24 symptomatic IDMs, five had marked septal hypertrophy with echocardiographic features suggesting left ventricular outflow obstruction and five had hypertrophy of the right ventricular free wall. With the exception of mild septal hypertrophy, these abnormalities res

Diabetes mellitus represents a major global health challenge and is strongly associated with cardiovascular complications, among which diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a major contributor to heart failure. Increasing evidence indicates that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a central role in DCM pathogenesis. However, mitochondrial abnormalities in the diabetic heart reflect not merely cellular injury but a coordinated process of mitochondrial metabolic reprogramming, characterized by altered substrate utilization, impaired oxidative phosphorylation, and disruption of mitochondrial quality contr

AIMS: It is well known that patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have an increased risk of both ischemic and non-ischemic heart disease. We studied sex differences in the microvascular function and myocardial extracellular fibrosis that underlie cardiac dysfunction.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging study, myocardial extracellular volume fraction (ECV), myocardial blood flow at rest (MBFrest) and during adenosine-induced stress (MBFstress), and the myocardial perfusion reserve (MPR) were determined in 221 patients with T2D without isch

Empagliflozin (EMPA), a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i), represents a novel therapeutic agent for diabetes management. Over the past decade, studies have consistently demonstrated that EMPA not only effectively lowers blood glucose levels but also confers substantial cardiovascular benefits without inducing hypoglycemia. This holds for individuals with or without diabetes, highlighting EMPA's potential in mitigating the risk of adverse cardiovascular events and cardiovascular mortality. The underlying mechanisms driving these advantageous effects remain incompletely understoo

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DbCM) is a common but underrecognized compli-cation of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Although the pathobiology of other cardiac complications of diabetes such as ischemic heart disease and cardiac autonomic neuropathy are mostly known with reasonable therapeutic options, the mechanisms and management options for DbCM are still not fully understood. In its early stages, DbCM presents with diastolic dysfunction followed by heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction that can progress to systolic dysfunction and HF with reduced ejection fraction in its adv

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycaemia that seriously affects human health. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a major cardiovascular complication and one of the main causes of death in patients with DM. Although DCM attracts great attention, and new therapeutic methods are continuously developed, there is a lack of effective treatment strategies. Therefore, exploring and targeting new signalling pathways related to the evolution of DCM becomes a hotspot and difficulty in the prevention and treatment of DCM. Pyroptosis is a newly discovered regulate

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DC) is a pathophysiologic condition caused by diabetes mellitus (DM) in the absence of coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, and hypertension that can lead to heart failure (HF), manifesting itself in the early stages with left ventricular hypertrophy and diastolic dysfunction, with marked HF and decreased systolic function in the later stages. There is still a lack of direct evidence to prove the exact existence of DC. Ferroptosis is a novel form of cell death characterized by reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Several cell a

The increasing attention towards diabetic cardiomyopathy as a distinctive complication of diabetes mellitus has highlighted the need for standardized diagnostic criteria and targeted treatment approaches in clinical practice. Ongoing research is gradually unravelling the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy, with a particular emphasis on investigating various post-translational modifications. These modifications dynamically regulate protein function in response to changes in the internal and external environment, and their disturbance of homeostasis holds significant relevance for the devel

Diabetes mellitus is one of the major causes of ischemic and nonischemic heart failure. While hypertension and coronary artery disease are frequent comorbidities in patients with diabetes, cardiac contractile dysfunction and remodeling occur in diabetic patients even without comorbidities, which is referred to as diabetic cardiomyopathy. Investigations in recent decades have demonstrated that the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), impaired handling of intracellular Ca2+, and alterations in energy metabolism are involved in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Diabetes is a long-term chronic disease, and cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), one of the cardiovascular complications of diabetes, has many uncertain factors. Epicardial fat, as the heart fat bank, functions as fatty tissue and is the heart's endocrine organ. The existence of diabetes affects the distribution of heart fat and promotes the secretion of adipokine. In different pathological conditions, it can promote the secretion of pro-inflammatory adipokine, reactive oxygen species, oxidative stress, and even autophagy, thus affecting cardiac

Diabetes mellitus and heart failure have a bidirectional relationship and can affect one another. Ventricular dysfunction that occurs in the absence of coronary atherosclerosis and hypertension in patients with diabetes mellitus is termed diabetic cardiomyopathy. Lipotoxicity, increased oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction are a few of the mechanisms implicated in diabetic cardiomyopathy. Patients with diabetes mellitus undergo cardiac structural changes leading to heart failure. The novel glucose-lowering medication that is now preferred for diabetic patients with heart failure is t
