The endothelial damage caused by X-ray contrast media is tested on "en face preparations" of the rat aorta after silver staining. Hypertonic contrast media cause dehydration of the vessels so that solutions of silver nitrate penetrate into the media during the phase of rehydration whereby medial transverse lines are stained. These artifacts can be avoided by 3 minutes rehydration of the vessels by Ringer solution prior to silver staining. A 35-year-old man with fever and diarrhea visited our hospital because of white string-like fecal excretion. Based on a morphological examination of the excreted object, a Diphyllobothrium infection was suspected. Additionally, Gram staining of a fecal sample revealed Campylobacter infection. After the intraduodenal administration of meglumine/diatrizoate sodium, the tapeworm was excreted. Obliteration of the gallbladder without formal cholecystectomy was attempted in 36 rabbits, using an open technique for cannulation of the gallbladder during laparotomy. The gallbladder was cannulated, the proximal cystic duct was occluded with cyanoacrylate-nitrocellulose 2% wt/wt, and the gallbladder mucosa was exposed to various sclerosing agents to induce fibrosis. A new oral formulation of iopamidol, "Gastromiro", was evaluated as a bowel contrast agent during abdominal computed tomography (CT). Most of the conventional anthelmintics for cestodiasis are known to destroy the worm body. The risk of cysticercosis and recurrence of cestodiasis will be avoided only if tapeworms are ejected with intact bodies and scoleces . Two cases with Diphyllobothrium latum and two with Taenia saginata were treated by administration of 200-300 ml of Gastrografin through a duodenal tube. The worm bodies were confirmed by fluoroscopy, and the expelled worms were alive and had intact scoleces . No adverse effects were noted in the patients during or after the treatment.

We compared the haemodynamic effects of a low osmolality contrast medium Hexabrix 320 (meglumine/sodium ioxaglate) with a high osmolality medium Urografin 370 (meglumine/sodium diatrizoate) in 32 patients. Three groups of patients (n = 55, 53 and 54) were examined with the x-ray contrast media Gastrografin, Peritrast-Oral GI, and Telebrix Gastro and Telebrix Gastroo assess the diagnostic ranking, side effects and taste of water-soluble oral contrast media. No significant differences were seen in respect of diagnostic ranking and side effects. Side effects were exclusively abdominal symptoms; there was no difference with regard to laxative action. Telebrix Gastroas accepted significantly better in respect of taste than Gastrografin and Peritrast-Oral GI.

Enemas were performed in dead rabbits to compare the filling speed of bowel with a liquid and a gaseous contrast medium. OBJECTIVE: The disadvantages of water-soluble gastrointestinal contrast agents include high osmolality, contrast dilution, and severe toxicity if aspirated. Perfluorocarbons are nontoxic in the lung and peritoneal cavity. Because perfluorocarbons are immiscible with water, they have no osmotic effect and cannot be diluted. Because these properties offer theoretical advantages over traditional gastrointestinal contrast agents, we compared two perfluorocarbons with barium and ionic and nonionic iodinated contrast material in a rat model of small-bowel obstruction.
