Stimulus dominance in fused dichotic syllables: trouble for the category goodness hypothesis.

Repp [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 60, 456-469 (1976)] hypothesized that dichotic stimulus dominance relationships between fused speech sounds reflect the relative category goodness of the competing stimuli, i.e., their relative perceptual distances from the listener's linguistic category prototypes. In experiment I, 15 synthetic syllables from a /bae/-/dae/-/gae) continuum were dichotically fused with three selected stimuli from the same continuum and presented to listeners for identification. Stimuli in the vicinity of phonetic category boundaries were found to make weaker dichotic competitors than s

Effects of dichotic/diotic versus monotic presentation on speech understanding in noise in elderly hearing-impaired listeners.

Hearing-impaired elderly subjects with mild to moderate, bilaterally symmetrical, sensorineural hearing losses received speech stimuli mixed with cafeteria and speech-babble noises in a variety of listening conditions. Open and closed set Rhyme test words and Speech Perception in Noise test sentences were presented at individually determined signal-to-noise ratios. the listening conditions included: (1) monotic against which all other conditions were compared; (2) low frequency attenuation of 5, 10, and 15 dB relative to the high frequencies; (3) dichotic, with the frequency band above 1000 Hz

Comparison of Children's Double Dichotic Digits and SCAN-3 Competing Words Free Recall Scores.

BACKGROUND: Practice guidelines do not specify which test recordings are best for assessing dichotic deficit or interaural asymmetry. Dichotic Digits and SCAN-3 Competing Words Free Recall are among the most widely used dichotic tests, but it is not known if the choice of test results in important differences in the identification of children with deficits or if they can be used interchangeably. PURPOSE: To determine whether two commonly used dichotic tests, SCAN-3 Competing Words Free Recall (CW) and Musiek's Dichotic Digits (DD), agree on interaural asymmetry and dichotic deficit in childre

Dichotic listening is associated with phonological awareness in Australian aboriginal children with otitis media: A remote community-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Recent literature has highlighted a link between hearing loss as a result of otitis media in the early years of life and impacted binaural processing skills in later childhood. Such findings are of particular relevance to Indigenous Australian children, who tend to experience otitis media earlier in life and for longer periods than their non-Indigenous counterparts. There is also growing interest in the effects of reduced auditory processing ability on a child's early learning of language and, specifically, on phonological awareness that contributes to word reading skills. The aim o

Dichotic listening deficits in children with dyslexia.

Several auditory processing deficits have been reported in children with dyslexia. In order to assess for the presence of a binaural integration type of auditory processing deficit, dichotic listening tests with digits, words and consonant-vowel (CV) pairs were administered to two groups of right-handed 11-year-old children, one group diagnosed with developmental dyslexia and an age-matched control group. Dyslexic children performed more poorly than controls from their left ears when listening to digits and words and from their right ears when listening to CVs. Direction of ear advantage varie…

Dichotic listening performance in learning-disabled children.

A dichotic listening test was administered to 114 learning-disabled children aged 6 to 10 years and the ratio of correct right ear responses to correct left ear responses was computed. Three subgroups were formed: those with a low right-left ear ratio, those with an average ratio, and those with a high ratio. The groups were given a battery of sensory integrative, postural-ocular, auditory-language, and academic tests. Mean scores were computed for each group. All three groups were considerably lower in their overall accuracy of response to the dichotic listening test than was a normative samp

Age-Related Dichotic Listening Skills in Impaired and Non-Impaired Readers: A Comparative Study.

Dichotic listening is the high-level auditory process which enables the perception of different verbal stimuli delivered simultaneously to the right and left ears (binaural integration), as well as the perception of a verbal stimulus presented to one ear while ignoring a different stimulus in the other ear (binaural separation). Deficits in central auditory processing have been reported in children with learning disabilities. The present study aimed to compare dichotic listening performances in right-handed impaired readers (IR) and non-impaired readers (non-IR) according to age. For this, a c

Effects of dichotic listening on gait domains of healthy older adults during dual-tasking: An exploratory observational study.

BACKGROUND: Identification of the cognitive mechanisms behind gait changes in aging is a prime endeavor in gerontology and geriatrics. For this reason, we have implemented a new dual-task paradigm where an auditory attentional task is performed during over-ground walking. Dichotic listening assesses spontaneous attention and voluntary attention directed to right and left-ear. The uniqueness of dichotic listening relies on its requirements that vary in difficulty and recruitment of resources from whole brain to one brain hemisphere. When used in dual-tasking, asymmetric effects on certain gait

Pitch, periodicity, and auditory organization.

The perception of pitch forms the basis of musical melody and harmony. It is also among the most precise of all our human senses, and with imagination, this precision can be used experimentally to investigate the functioning of the auditory system. This tutorial presents auditory demonstrations from the zoo of pitch effects: pitch shifts, noise pitch, virtual pitch, dichotic pitch, and the pitches of things that are not there at all. It introduces models of auditory processing, derived from contemporary psychoacoustics and auditory physiology, and tests these models against the experimental ef

Dichotic listening deficits in children with hearing loss.

PURPOSE: This correlational study compared dichotic listening among children with significant hearing loss to typically developing children and children clinically assessed for auditory processing disorder. METHOD: Recorded versions of two dichotic tests were delivered under earphones or in the sound field for children using amplification. Individual ear scores and interaural asymmetry were compared to normative data. Matched deficit patterns from both tests were identified, ranked for severity of deficit, and compared across groups. Relationships between dichotic scores and factors related t

Significant relation between MR measures of planum temporale area and dichotic processing of syllables in dyslexic children.

In the present study, we investigated differences between dyslexic and normal reading children in asymmetry of the planum temporale area in the upper posterior part of the temporal lobe and dichotic listening performance to consonant-vowel syllables. The current study was an extension of previous studies in our laboratory on the same participants, now including also girls and left-handers. There were 20 boys and 3 girls in the dyslexic group and 19 boys and 4 girls in the normal reading group. The age of the participants was 10-12 years for both groups. The participants were screened from a po

Effects of simulated conductive hearing loss on dichotic listening performance for digits.

This experiment assessed conditions under which simulated conductive hearing loss would affect performance on a digit dichotic test. Losses were simulated by insertion of EAR plugs, and each subject served as his/her own control. Performance for left ear plugged and right ear plugged conditions was compared with performance in a normal hearing condition (neither ear plugged). Conductive losses did not affect dichotic performance at test intensities 12 dB above the "knees" of monotic performance-intensity functions for the plugged ears (95% correct points) but did affect dichotic performance fo

Speech Perception and Dichotic Listening Are Associated With Hearing Thresholds and Cognition, Respectively, in Unaided Presbycusis.

Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss is a prevalent condition in the elderly population, which affects oral communication, especially in background noise, and has been associated with social isolation, depression, and cognitive decline. However, the mechanisms that relate hearing loss with cognition are complex and still elusive. Importantly, recent studies show that the use of hearing aids in presbycusis, which is its standard management, can induce neuroplasticity and modify performance in cognitive tests. As the majority of the previous studies on audition and cognition obtained their re

[Presentation of a new dichotic hearing test for the measurement of functional hemispheric asymmetries].

A newly developed dichotic test was tried on a clinical population of 197 primary school children. The results show a right ear advantage; that is better achievements in reproduction of verbal material presented to the right ear. This effect can only be reliably proved by double presentation of the material, once in inverse form. Changes in the test performance while doing the test; as well as the importance of the intervening variable, dominance of one word over the other within a pair simultaneously presented are discussed - first of all a statistical analysis was made to isolate the words t

The effect of the menstrual cycle on dichotic listening.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the menstrual cycle on responses to a dichotic listening task. It was hypothesized that participants would exhibit a stronger right ear advantage during the menstrual cycle days when estrogen levels are at their peak. It was also hypothesized that the women not taking oral contraceptives would exhibit greater variations in ear advantage over the course of their menstrual cycle than those taking oral contraceptives. Finally, it was hypothesized that the error response rates would remain similar across different listening conditions and ov
