Parasitism of the Zweeloo Woman: Dicrocoeliasis evidenced in a Roman period bog mummy.

We undertook the analysis of Zweeloo Woman, a bog mummy from the Netherlands, to assess her parasitic state. Evidence of infection came from two areas: (1) liver paraffin sections and (2) microfossils washed from an intestinal section. Although the liver had shrunken considerably, objects consistent with operculated trematode eggs were found. After evaluating the range of trematode species that produce eggs in liver tissue, we arrived at the diagnosis of Dicrocoelium dendriticum. Although only 0.1ml of sediment was recovered from an intestinal section, eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuri

Studies on the pathology of dicrocoeliasis and fascioliasis in the goat. II. The histochemistry of bile-duct mucosubstances.

Histochemical studies were made on the characteristics of carbohydrate-rich compounds in the bile-duct mucosa of goats infected either with Dicrocoelium dendriticum or with Fasciola hepatica. In a previous study the author showed that a chronic infection with these parasites produces glandular hyperplasia in the walls of bile ducts. This study revealed a definitely increased secretion of qualitatively normal mucosubstances by the hyperplastic epithelial cells. Epithelial mucosubstances in the bile-duct walls were characterized by the presence of periodate-reactive hydroxy groups and both carbo

Myrrh (Commiphora molmol) in treatment of human and sheep dicrocoeliasis dendriticum in Saudi Arabia.

Dicrocoeliasis dendriticum is now imposing itself as an animal and zoonotic helminthic disease in many Arabian countries. Myrrh extract of Commiphora molmol (Mirazid) successfully and safely treated clinically and parasitologically proven 18 human dicrocoeliasis dendriticum patients. The dose was 2 capsules (300 mg each) given on an empty stomach an hour before the breakfast for six successive days. Cure (100%) was achieved clinically and by stool analysis for two months follow up. Besides, fifteen sheep naturally infected with Dicrocoelium dendriticum as proven parasitologically were successf

Studies on the pathology of dicrocoeliasis and fascioliasis in the goat. I. The histopathology of the liver and bile ducts.

Comparative studies were made on the histopathology of the liver and bile ducts in dicrocoeliasis and fascioliasis of the goat. Investigations revealed certain similarities in the nature of the pathological phenomena produced by D. dendriticum and F. hepatica. However, a feature peculiar to fascioliasis was the migratory tracks of immature flukes in the liver parenchyma. Further, the lesions produced by fascioliasis were distinctly more pronounced than those present in dicrocoeliasis. In both parasitic diseases the bile-duct walls showed glandular hyperplasia, increased frequency of goblet cel

Studies on the pathology of dicrocoeliasis and fascioliasis in the goat. 3. The histochemistry of mast cells and globule leucocytes.

Comparative studies were made on the structure and histochemistry of mast cells and globule leucocytes in dicrocoeliasis and fascioliasis of the goat. Investigations showed that D. dendriticum and F. hepatica infections in the goat produce an increase in the number of hepatic mast cells and frequent occurrence of globule leucocytes in the epithelium of the bile ducts. The only difference between these infections was that globule leucocytes were more frequent in small bile ducts in dicrocoeliasis than in fascioliasis. Histochemical methods showed the presence of sulphomucins in the granules of

[Ovine dicrocoeliasis: incidence of climatic factors and share in the setting of a forecasting method (author's transl)].

Study of annual activity cycle of ants parasited with Dicrocoelium lanceolatum. Effect of some climatic factors (temperature, rainfall) on seasonal variations of the number of clinching parasited ants. A close analysis of the data displays a double correlation: the increase of the number of clinching ants indirectly brought about by precipitations and this with some delay; a strong decrease by high temperatures in the height of summer. Setting of a calendar including the different stages of the developing cycle of Dicrocoelium lanceolatum in Limousin and proposition of a forecasting technic es

Experimental dicrocoeliasis: the humoral immune response of golden hamsters and rabbits to primary infection with Dicrocoelium dendriticum.

The results presented deal with the humoral immune response of golden hamsters to primary experimental infection with D. dendriticum. The development of serum antibodies has been comparatively investigated with three hamster groups (n = 43) harbouring different burdens of adult flukes. The mean numbers of parasites were 11, 30, or 130 per animal. Serum antibody response was studied during an observation period of at least 331 and up to 496 days postinfection. For antibody detection the sensitivities of precipitation test (PTs) (double diffusion test, immuno- and counterimmunoelectrophoresis),

The effect of sex on seasonal variation in single and double infection of cattle in Sierra Leone by Dicrocoelium hospes and Fasciola gigantica.

The incidence of dicrocoeliasis (61.8%) is higher than that of fascioliasis (25.5%) and their peaks do not occur at the same time of the year. The peak for the former occurs in the dry season while that of the latter occurs in the rainy season. The incidence of dicrocoeliasis and fascioliasis in female cattle was found to be higher than that of male cattle. Double infection was higher in female (14.7%) than in male hosts (9.6%).

First isolation of Dicrocoelium dendriticum among cattle in some Northern Algerian slaughterhouses.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dicrocoelium dendriticum or small liver fluke often causes unnoticed clinical manifestations in cattle. For a live animal, its diagnosis is mainly based on the detection of eggs by coproscopic examination. The objective of this study was to determine the presence or absence of Dicrocoelium spp. never previously reported in the study area but also to establish its prevalence, as well as an association between dicrocoeliasis and sex, age and season of the year, and histological characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was carried out in slaughterhouses of three dist

Prevalence of Bovine Trematodiases and Associated Risk Factors in Nyagatare District, Rwanda.

INTRODUCTION: Trematodiases cause significant financial losses to livestock worldwide and some of which are zoonotic, raising public health concerns. In Rwanda, information on the prevalence of bovine trematodiases is scanty, and this hampers efforts to control and prevent them in the country. METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of bovine trematodiases in Nyagatare district and associated risk factors. One hundred cattle were randomly selected for this study and faecal samples were collected directly from the rectum to identify trematode eggs using a simple s

Dicrocoelium dendriticum: a true infection?

Dicrocoelium dendriticum is a liver parasite of ruminants. Humans are occasionally infected by ingestion of intermediate hosts. We report a rare case of dicrocoeliasis in a 55-year-old woman who presented with eosinophilia and elevated bilirubin. Therapy with albendazole eradicated the parasite and normalized blood parameters.

First detection of Dicrocoelium dendriticum (Digenea: Dicrocoelidae) from cattle in the West Bank, Palestine.

Dicrocoelium dendriticum is a globally distributed trematode that infects the bile ducts of ruminants and causes dicrocoeliasis, leading to economic losses in livestock production. Despite favorable ecological conditions, its presence in cattle had not previously reported in Palestine. This short communication reports the first detection and characterization of D. dendriticum in cattle from the West Bank, Palestine. Adult flukes were recovered from bile ducts during routine post-mortem inspection at Al-Bireh slaughterhouse and identified based on morphological characteristics. Molecular confir

Human infections with Dicrocoelium dendriticum in Kyrgyzstan: the tip of the iceberg?

Dicrocoelium dendriticum is the causative agent of a rare food-borne zoonosis of the human biliary tract, dicrocoeliasis, for which few human prevalence data are available. Infection occurs through the ingestion of ants containing metacercariae, whereas pseudo-infections (presence of D. dendriticum eggs in stool in the absence of adult worms) are due to the consumption of infected animal liver. Here, results from a cross-sectional survey carried out among 138 children aged 2-15 yr in a peri-urban area of Kyrgyzstan are reported. Each child provided 1 stool sample that was subjected to the FLOT

[Histopathological analysis of bovine livers infested by Dicrocoelium dendriticum].

The object of this study was to determine the evolution of the lesions provoked by dicrocoeliasis in hepatic tissue, as a function of the quantity of parasites. Of the 274 bovine livers taken from the slaughterhouse and autopsied for Dicrocoelium dendriticum infection, 191 demonstrated hepatic lesions that revealed a proliferation of bile ducts, modifications of the bile ducts and hepatic fibrosis lesions. The modifications of the surfaces of the bile ducts and the hepatic fibrosis lesions increased with the level of infestation from 0 to 300 D dendriticum. Above these values, 301 to 600 fluke
