Distribution of Pasteurella haemolytica in the respiratory tracts of carrier calves and those subsequently infected experimentally with Dictyocaulus viviparus.

Distribution of Pasteurella haemolytica in the respiratory tracts of calves with no apparent clinical signs of illness and those infected experimentally with Dictyocaulus viviparus was determined so as to define carrier sites for this organism. The calves had been positive by nasopharyngeal swab for either P haemolytica A2 or A1 for at least two months or for over a month, respectively, before slaughter. P haemolytica A1 was acquired following horizontal spread from other infected calves. It was observed post mortem that P haemolytica A1 or A2 resided in the tonsils and retropharyngeal lymph n

Pathological lesions in the lungs of red deer Cervus elaphus (L.) induced by a newly-described Dictyocaulus cervi (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea).

The large lungworms of the genus Dictyocaulus are causative agents of parasitic bronchitis in various ungulate hosts, including red deer. Recently, the red deer-derived lungworm D. cervi was described and separated from D. eckerti. Little is known of the transmission patterns, epidemiology, geographical distribution and pathogenicity of D. cervi. Histological examinations were performed on 22 formalin-fixed lung tissue samples of hunted red deer. Exclusively, D. cervi adults were derived from 15 red deer and confirmed molecularly (GenBank accession: MH183394). Dictyocaulus cervi infection was

Morphological and molecular description of Dictyocaulus xanthopygus sp. nov. (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) from the Manchurian wapiti Cervus elaphus xanthopygus.

Dictyocaulus xanthopygus sp. nov. (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) was isolated from the lungs of the Manchurian wapiti in Primorsky kray, Russia. The newly described species exhibits morphological characteristics of Dictyocaulus but is distinct from congeneric species based on morphological (lengths of body and esophagus, distances from the anterior end to nerve ring and to excretory pore, the thickness of the buccal capsule, etc.) and molecular features. High levels of genetic divergence as well as Bayesian phylogenetic analyses based on 18S rRNA nuclear and cox1 mitochondrial genes supported

Apparent prevalence of and risk factors for infection with Ostertagia ostertagi, Fasciola hepatica and Dictyocaulus viviparus in Swiss dairy herds.

Infections with helminth parasites can negatively affect performance of dairy cows. Knowledge on infection intensity, spatial distributions and risk factors are key to develop targeted treatment strategies. Canada and most EU countries have conducted large investigations, but respective data for Switzerland were missing. We now performed a bulk tank milk serosurvey for Ostertagia ostertagi, Fasciola hepatica, and Dictyocaulus viviparus on a total of 1036 voluntarily participating dairy herds that were sampled at confinement periods, i.e. in winter 2014/15 or 2015/16, respectively. All samples

Development of a multiplex fluorescence immunological assay for the simultaneous detection of antibodies against Cooperia oncophora, Dictyocaulus viviparus and Fasciola hepatica in cattle.

BACKGROUND: A major constraint for the effective control and management of helminth parasites is the lack of rapid, high-throughput, routine diagnostic tests to assess the health status of individual animals and herds and to identify the parasite species responsible for these helminthoses. The capability of a multiplex platform for the simultaneous detection of three pasture associated parasite species was evaluated and compared to existing ELISAs. METHODS: The recombinant antigens 14.2 kDa ES protein for Cooperia oncophora, major sperm protein for Dictyocaulus viviparus and Cathepsin L1 for

The distribution of strongylid egg and lungworm (Dictyocaulus eckerti) larval counts in adult female farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus), and the implications for parasite control.

Whilst healthy adult farmed red deer show little clinical indication of parasite infection, they may still be maintaining infection levels on the farm through low-level shedding of nematode eggs and lungworm larvae. This work was undertaken to establish the long-term distribution of parasite counts, to determine whether the higher counts seen in previous trials are repeatable across the same animals. All adult female red deer on a New Zealand North Island property were faecal sampled (n = 209), weighed, and body condition scored (BCS) on five sampling occasions from March - August 2021. Faecal

The use of bulk-tank milk ELISAs to assess the spatial distribution of Fasciola hepatica, Ostertagia ostertagi and Dictyocaulus viviparus in dairy cattle in Flanders (Belgium).

Fasciola hepatica, Ostertagia ostertagi and Dictyocaulus viviparus are helminth parasites with a wide distribution and an important economic impact in cattle in temperate climates. This paper describes the spatial distribution of F. hepatica, O. ostertagi and D. viviparus in dairy herds in Flanders (Belgium). One thousand eight hundred herds were selected at random from the Flemish dairy population (n=7002), stratified on community level to obtain a sample representative for the entire study area. From each herd, a bulk milk sample collected in autumn 2006 was analysed with previously describe

Efficacy of Cydectin moxidectin 1% injectable against experimental infections of Dictyocaulus viviparus and Bunostomum phlebotomum superimposed on natural gastrointestinal infections in calves.

Twenty male Holstein calves averaging 105 kg in weight and naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes and small numbers of lungworm and hookworm, were given experimental infections with the two latter species to provide adult and larval stages for anthelmintic evaluation. Following random allotment, one group of 10 calves was injected subcutaneously with moxidectin at a dosage of 0.2 mg kg-1 of body weight. A second group of 10 was injected subcutaneously with unmedicated blank vehicle at a dosage of 1 ml per 50 kg of body weight. Fecal samples were examined before treatment and at 7 a

Comparison of the FLOTAC technique with the McMaster method and the Baermann technique to determine counts of Dictyocaulus eckerti L1 and strongylid eggs in faeces of red deer (Cervus elaphus).

The FLOTAC flotation technique has been introduced as a new diagnostic tool to detect parasitic elements from faeces. Samples from naturally infected young deer were used for counting Dictyocaulus larvae and strongylid eggs. The FLOTAC technique, using 11 different flotation solutions with specific gravities (sg) between 1.20 and 1.45, was compared with the Baermann technique and the saturated sodium chloride (sg 1.20)-based McMaster method. In addition, a comparison was made between the FLOTAC technique with magnesium sulphate (sg 1.28) and the Baermann technique for larval recovery from faec

Histopathological findings in the lungs of Scottish red and roe deer.

Histopathology on portions of lung collected from 34 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 15 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) between 1977 and 1981 revealed evidence of lungworm infestation in 16 red and 14 roe deer. In the red deer, Dictyocaulus species, and the developmental stages of another parasite, believed to be Elaphostrongylus cervi, were involved. Dictyocaulus also affected the roe deer, but in them the major lesions were associated with protostrongylids. Exudative bronchopneumonia, including two cases of fungal infection, was predominantly a problem of red deer under seven months of age. Bet

The Prevalence and Control of Lungworms of Pastoral Ruminants in Iran.

Lungworms of the genera Dictyocaulus, Muellerius, Protostrongylus, and Cystocaulus are common helminths of domestic and wild ruminants with substantial veterinary and economic importance. Several studies have assessed the presence and prevalence of lungworm infections in ruminants in Iran. This report compiles the available scientific information about the occurrence of lungworms in domestic and wild ruminants in Iran between 1931 and June 2022 to give an insight into their epidemiology, and where possible to describe drug treatment efficacy. For this purpose, national and international scient

[(IMPACT OF LUNGWORM INFESTATION ON THE BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF ANIMALS DURING COMBINATION TREATMENT WITH ALBENDAZOLE AND T- AND B-ACTIVIN)].

Lungworm infection is caused by a Dictyocaulus filaria nematode parasitizing the bronchi and bronchioles of sheep and goats. Various anthelmintics, including albendazole, levamisole, fenbendazole, ivermectins, and others, are used to treat the animals. The aim of this investigation was to study the impact of lungworm infestation on the biochemical parameters of animals during combination treatment with albendazole and T- and B-activin. Experiments were carried out in 20 uninfected mongrel lambs aged 4-5 months. Infectious D.filaria larvae were given with water to 15 lambs once orally at a dose

Control of parasitic bronchitis in calves: vaccination or treatment?

A 16-day infection of Dictyocaulus viviparus in two groups of calves was treated with levamisole and fenbendazole respectively. Five days afterwards the calves were reinfected with 4000 larvae and necropsied 21 days later. Although the lungworm burdens of the two groups of calves were reduced by about 70 per cent compared to a control group the clinical signs of dyspnoea, tachypnoea and coughing were indistinguishable from a primary infection. This was due to pulmonary emphysema, oedema and an acute epithelialising pneumonia apparently associated with the death and disintegration of lungworms

Dictyocaulosis in dairy cows in Brazil: an epidemiological, clinical-pathological and therapeutic approach.

An outbreak of severe parasitic pneumonia caused by Dictyocaulus viviparus was diagnosed in adult dairy cows in the municipality of Arabutã, Southern Brazil. The total morbidity in the herd was 71.9%, and the morbidity amongst adult lactating cattle was 100%. The main clinical signs observed were dyspnea, tachypnea, nasal discharge, decreased milk production, and cough. A necropsy was conducted on one animal in order to establish the diagnosis. The herd had been treated previously with levamisole; however, clinical signs persisted and became worse. After treatment with eprinomectin the severit

[Fecal surveys in pastured sheep and the occurrence of Cysticercus tenuicollis in slaughtered sheep].

Out of 4 fenced pastures, 2 stationary flocks and 3 wandering flocks with approx. 2,000 mother sheep, 962 samples of faeces were checked for the occurrence of gastro-intestinal nematodes and lungworms. Irrespective of the way the sheep are kept, an infestation incidence of 11.1 to 100% with gastro-intestinal nematodes was found. In one flock even after two treatments 66.7% were still infected; therefore, suspect methods of treatment have to be avoided and a constant change of anthelmintics is absolutely essential. Dictyocaulus filaria occurred in 6 out of 9 flocks and was easy to be treated ch

Dictyocaulosis in cattle: Retrospective analysis of 20 outbreaks in Central Argentina.

Bovine lungworms (Dictyocaulus viviparus) are nematodes which cause a respiratory disease known as verminous bronchitis or pneumonia. In this paper, we describe 20 outbreaks of bovine dictyocaulosis recorded between 2000 and 2023 in Central Argentina. Outbreaks occurred more frequently during the autumn-winter season (from April to August) and affected cattle under 1 year old in beef production systems. An average morbidity and mortality of 26.22 % and 8.44 % were registered, respectively. The main clinical signs observed were respiratory distress (coughing, tachypnea, dyspnea, and nasal disch

New parasitological findings for pre-Hispanic camelids.

Paleoparasitological examination provides information of parasite-host associations in the past, shedding light on the geographical origin of some parasites, on the possible dispersal routes and on some of the processes that modelled the parasitic communities. The aim of the present study was to examine parasite remains present in camelid coprolites collected from the archaeological site Alero Destacamento Guardaparque, Patagonia and to discuss the paleoparasitological findings in a biogeographical and paleoecological context. Coprolites were collected from different stratified layers dating f
