Lack of efficacy of macrocyclic lactones, albendazole, and levamisole against a field population of Dictyocaulus viviparus in cattle.

Dictyocaulus viviparus (Strongylida: Dictyocaulidae) is the etiological agent of pulmonary parasitosis in cattle, causing severe respiratory symptoms and, in extreme cases, death. Outbreaks of D. viviparus were recorded on a property in Brazil in the years 2022 and 2023 in an integrated agriculture and livestock system. Treatment failure was observed for levamisole, macrocyclic lactones and benzimidazoles, and only the combination of levamisole (18.8 %) and moxidectin (1 %) was effective according to fecal larvae counting reduction test (FLCRT). The following efficacy rates were observed: albe

Morphological and molecular description of Dictyocaulus xanthopygus sp. nov. (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) from the Manchurian wapiti Cervus elaphus xanthopygus.

Dictyocaulus xanthopygus sp. nov. (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) was isolated from the lungs of the Manchurian wapiti in Primorsky kray, Russia. The newly described species exhibits morphological characteristics of Dictyocaulus but is distinct from congeneric species based on morphological (lengths of body and esophagus, distances from the anterior end to nerve ring and to excretory pore, the thickness of the buccal capsule, etc.) and molecular features. High levels of genetic divergence as well as Bayesian phylogenetic analyses based on 18S rRNA nuclear and cox1 mitochondrial genes supported

Allotype-Dependent Responses to the Vaccine Candidate Thrombospondin-Like Protein of Dictyocaulus viviparus in Calves.

The nematode Dictyocaulus viviparus causes parasitic bronchitis in cattle. There is a vaccine based on irradiated larvae against this parasite. However, no memory response is induced, and donor calves are needed for culturing the larvae. Therefore, a well-defined subunit vaccine would be welcomed. Because thrombospondin-like protein (TLP) is an immunodominant protein from the brush border of adult parasites, it was tested as a vaccine candidate. Calves (n = 7) were vaccinated twice with TLP in Quil-A, and antibody responses, IgG2 allotypes and protection were determined. Protection is defined

In vivo effect of sublethal concentrations of albendazole metabolites on the structure of the reproductive organs of Dictyocaulus viviparus.

Dictyocaulus viviparus were harvested from calves treated daily with albendazole at dose-rates sub-lethal to this parasite and from matched untreated calves. Male and female reproductive tracts from the worms were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy. A first description of the testis of this nematode is provided. Cell division in the germinal zone of both male and female worms was arrested by in vivo exposure to albendazole metabolites and the cytoplasmic threads connecting the germinal cells to the rachis disappeared. In male worms from treated calves, the rachis was absent

The vicuna (Vicugna vicugna) as a natural host of Dictyocaulus filaria in Peru.

Lungworm infection, or verminous pneumonia, is a parasitic disease that causes serious problems in small and large ruminants. Despite the fact that nematodes of the genus Dictyocaulus in cattle and sheep are the main cause of this disease, there are few studies on the natural infections of South American camelids. For this reason, this study aims to report the natural infection by Dictyocaulus filaria in vicunas (Vicugna vicugna) for the first time. During a shearing season (chaku) in Cuzco, Peru, two accidentally killed adult vicunas were submitted to the IVITA-Marangani research center in Cu

Dictyocaulosis in cattle: Retrospective analysis of 20 outbreaks in Central Argentina.

Bovine lungworms (Dictyocaulus viviparus) are nematodes which cause a respiratory disease known as verminous bronchitis or pneumonia. In this paper, we describe 20 outbreaks of bovine dictyocaulosis recorded between 2000 and 2023 in Central Argentina. Outbreaks occurred more frequently during the autumn-winter season (from April to August) and affected cattle under 1 year old in beef production systems. An average morbidity and mortality of 26.22 % and 8.44 % were registered, respectively. The main clinical signs observed were respiratory distress (coughing, tachypnea, dyspnea, and nasal disch

Sheep Welfare in Confined and Pasture Production Systems: A Comparative Study with Emphasis on Parasitological Status.

Background: While traditional pasture-based systems offer sheep natural living conditions and freedom, barn farming provides greater environmental control and protection. The choice of farming system is a crucial factor directly affecting the physical and mental health of the animals. Aim: This study evaluated welfare indicators and parasite prevalence in different sheep management systems, examining the impact of parasitic infections on ewe welfare. Methods: Conducted from November 2025 to April 2026 across 26 farms (13 confined and 13 pasture), the study individually assessed a sample of 119

Development of a multiplex fluorescence immunological assay for the simultaneous detection of antibodies against Cooperia oncophora, Dictyocaulus viviparus and Fasciola hepatica in cattle.

BACKGROUND: A major constraint for the effective control and management of helminth parasites is the lack of rapid, high-throughput, routine diagnostic tests to assess the health status of individual animals and herds and to identify the parasite species responsible for these helminthoses. The capability of a multiplex platform for the simultaneous detection of three pasture associated parasite species was evaluated and compared to existing ELISAs. METHODS: The recombinant antigens 14.2 kDa ES protein for Cooperia oncophora, major sperm protein for Dictyocaulus viviparus and Cathepsin L1 for

Parasitic bronchitis and pneumonia.

Parasitic bronchitis and pneumonia is often a serious problem on individual farms, despite the fact that the disease is easy to diagnose, easy to treat, and easy to prevent by anthelminthic control programs or by vaccination. This article presents the various phases of the primary infection as well as the reinfection syndrome.

Current status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in Singapore.

Parasitic infections adopt a rather low profile in the highly urbanized setting in Singapore. Very few food-borne parasitic infections are encountered. Apart from a few reports of infections with Clonorchis/Opisthorchis, Taenia spp. and hydatid disease, there are no other citations of such helminthic infections. Seroprevalence surveys have shown the presence of toxoplasmosis in local meat animals (sheep, pigs and cattle) and Toxoplasma strains have been isolated from the pig, tree shrew (Tupaia glis), slow loris (Nycticebus coucang) and guinea pigs. Human toxoplasmosis is prevalent in Singapor

Inefficacy of ivermectin and moxidectin treatments against Dictyocaulus viviparus in dairy calves.

BACKGROUND: The bovine lungworm Dictyocaulus viviparus negatively impacts bovine health and leads to substantial economic losses. Lungworm infections can be difficult to manage due to the unpredictable and severe nature of clinical outbreaks. Despite the widespread use of macrocyclic lactones (MLs) in grazing cattle in the UK, there have been no confirmed reports of resistant lungworms to date, with only one case of anthelmintic-resistant (ML) lungworm confirmed worldwide. METHODS: Lungworm Baermann filtrations were conducted on first-season grazing dairy calves as part of a wider study inves

Dictyocaulus viviparus bulk tank milk seropositivity is correlated with meteorological variables.

Control of infections with Dictyocaulus viviparus is difficult due to its volatile epidemiology. In the absence of predictive models, 'vigilance and treatment' is today's mainstay for control. In order to evaluate the potential of predictive model development to support a more preventative approach, this longitudinal study aimed at understanding the influence of weather factors on D. viviparus bulk tank milk antibody ELISA results. Bulk tank milk samples were analysed with a Major Sperm Protein-based ELISA (expressed as an optical density ratio) twice monthly on 717 Flemish dairy farms during

Parasite control practices on pasture-based dairy farms in the Republic of Ireland.

Dictyocaulus viviparus, Ostertagia ostertagi (nematode parasites), and Fasciola hepatica (trematode parasite) result in productivity losses on dairy farms and impact on animal health through clinical and sub-clinical disease. Parasite control in livestock systems is largely based on the use of chemoprophylactic agents (anthelmintics), grazing management, or a combination of both. The objective of this study was to document current parasite control measures employed by Irish dairy farmers in a predominantly pasture-based livestock system. A questionnaire survey of 312 geographically representat

Initial assessment of the economic burden of major parasitic helminth infections to the ruminant livestock industry in Europe.

We report a European wide assessment of the economic burden of gastrointestinal nematodes, Fasciola hepatica (common liver fluke) and Dictyocaulus viviparus (bovine lungworm) infections to the ruminant livestock industry. The economic impact of these parasitic helminth infections was estimated by a deterministic spreadsheet model as a function of the proportion of the ruminant population exposed to grazing, the infection frequency and intensity, the effect of the infection on animal productivity and mortality and anthelmintic treatment costs. In addition, we estimated the costs of anthelmintic

Cryopreservation of Dictyocaulus viviparus third-stage larvae and Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae.

In cryopreservation studies with third-stage larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus, best results were achieved by incubating larvae in 0.05% NaOCl at 37 degrees C to remove the sheath, followed by cooling at a rate of 1 degree C min per min down to about 0 degree C. After an equilibration time of 10 min at +4 degrees C with or without 4% polyethylene glycol-400 as cryoprotectant, samples were frozen at the same cooling rate to an intermediate temperature of -20 degrees C, maintained at this temperature for 10 min and finally plunged into liquid nitrogen for storage. Three groups of 3 calves were in
