Retinopetal neurons located in the diencephalon of the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata).

After a monocular injection of the cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) into the vitreous chamber of one eye, the retrogradely labeled retinopetal neurons were studied in the diencephalon of the Japanese monkey. The retrogradely transported tracer was visualized using the peroxidase antibody technique and an anti-cholera toxin antibody. The CTB-labeled nerve cell bodies were scattered in the periventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, lateral hypothalamic area, and midline nuclei of the thalamus on both sides. In addition, a few retrogradely labeled nerve somata were observed in the most rostral por

PAX6 immunoreactivity in the diencephalon and midbrain of alligator during early development.

PAX6 expression was examined during early development of the diencephalon and midbrain of Alligator using an immunocytochemical methodology. These observations focused on the basal plate to determine whether diencephalic prosomere organization in this region followed a pattern previously identified for alar plate areas. PAX6 expression was also described in alar diencephalic regions and the adjacent midbrain. PAX6 (+) cells in the basal plate were first seen in prosomere 1 at stage 7, in the midbrain at stage 10, and lastly in prosomeres 2 and 3 at stage 11. By stage 12, a nearly continuous co

Asymmetric nodal signaling in the zebrafish diencephalon positions the pineal organ.

The vertebrate brain develops from a bilaterally symmetric neural tube but later displays profound anatomical and functional asymmetries. Despite considerable progress in deciphering mechanisms of visceral organ laterality, the genetic pathways regulating brain asymmetries are unknown. In zebrafish, genes implicated in laterality of the viscera (cyclops/nodal, antivin/lefty and pitx2) are coexpressed on the left side of the embryonic dorsal diencephalon, within a region corresponding to the presumptive epiphysis or pineal organ. Asymmetric gene expression in the brain requires an intact midlin

Changes in rapidly transported proteins associated with development of abnormal projections in the diencephalon.

The development of the hamster visual system is accompanied by striking changes in the pattern of proteins that are synthesized in retinal ganglion cells and rapidly transported to their nerve terminals. To determine whether any of these protein changes are regulated by interactions between the developing nerve endings and the cells with which they form synapses, we induced retinofugal axons to form abnormal projections in the lateral posterior (LP) nucleus of the thalamus and dense patches of hyperinnervation in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) by removing their principal target, the supe

The diencephalon of the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops). Part I: thalamus and metathalamus.

The diencephalon of the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) is described and compared with that of other primates, particularly the macaque monkey (Macaca mulatta). In the vervet monkey, the thalamus is divided into six nuclear groups: anterior, midline, medial, dorsolateral, ventrolateral and posterior. The anterior nuclear group shows a regressive nucleus anterodorsalis and a poorly defined demarcation between the nuclei anteromedialis and anteroventralis. There is a large interthalamic adhesion in which the ventral region containing nuclei centralis medialis, interventralis and reuniens,

Eating caused by 6-hydroxydopamine-induced release of noradrenaline in the diencephalon of the rat.

1. Although it is well established that exogenous noradrenaline injected into the diencephalon causes the satiated rat to eat, it is not known whether eating may be induced by release of endogenous diencephalic noradrenaline. In the present experiment 6-hydroxydopamine was injected into the diencephalon of the rat to release catecholamines and produce degeneration of catecholamine-containing neurones.2. Injection into the preoptic area of 0.01-16.0 mug of 6-hydroxydopamine caused satiated rats to eat.3. All doses of 6-hydroxydopamine above 0.01 mug produced long-lasting partial depletion of no

From shock to the diencephalon: ECT inventor Ugo Cerletti's theory of consciousness.

This article uncovers an overlooked aspect of Ugo Cerletti's intellectual journey, highlighting how his work on mental illness, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and acroagonines reflected a broader and profound interest in the nature of consciousness. Starting with practical therapeutic innovations, Cerletti ventured into theoretical domains that were both original and pioneering. Understanding epileptic seizures as instances of loss of consciousness, Cerletti proposed that consciousness, primarily associated with sensation-including vigilance, emotion, and memory-arises not from a singular, i

A Systematic Review of Direct Outputs from the Cerebellum to the Brainstem and Diencephalon in Mammals.

The cerebellum is involved in many motor, autonomic and cognitive functions, and new tasks that have a cerebellar contribution are discovered on a regular basis. Simultaneously, our insight into the functional compartmentalization of the cerebellum has markedly improved. Additionally, studies on cerebellar output pathways have seen a renaissance due to the development of viral tracing techniques. To create an overview of the current state of our understanding of cerebellar efferents, we undertook a systematic review of all studies on monosynaptic projections from the cerebellum to the brainste

Neuropathological evaluation of the diencephalon, basal ganglia and upper brainstem in alobar holoprosencephaly.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is caused by the impaired cleavage of the embryonic prosencephalon, and in the severest type, alobar HPE, the normally bilateral diencephalon and basal ganglia are fused and tend to incorporate into the upper brainstem. The detailed neuropathological features of HPE remain to be elucidated, although disturbed regulation in body temperature and electrolyte balance are frequently observed. We immunohistologically examined the expression of hypothalamic hormones, neurotransmitters, calcium-binding proteins and neuropeptides in six female autopsy cases of alobar HPE. Eight

Distribution of somatostatin-28 (1-12) immunoreactivity in the diencephalon and the brainstem of the dog.

The term somatostatin refers to a family of peptides, mainly somatostatin-14, somatostatin-28 and somatostatin-28 (1-12), which are the cleavage products of a single 116 amino acid-long preprosomatostain molecule. The production of antibodies to these peptides allows their localization in a number of neuronal populations throughout the entire neuroaxis in many mammals. The dog has been pointed out as an extremely useful animal model for studying age-related cognitive dysfunction and other neuronal changes associated with aging in which somatostatin appears to be involved. However, only very sc

Expression of the cell adhesion molecule axonin-1 in neuromeres of the chicken diencephalon.

Axonin-1/TAG-1, a member of the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily of adhesion molecules, has been shown to be selectively expressed by a subset of neurons and fiber tracts in the developing nervous system of vertebrates. Axonin-1/TAG-1 is thought to play a role in the outgrowth, guidance, and fasciculation of neurites. In the present study, we map the expression of axonin-1 in the diencephalon of the chicken brain at early and intermediate stages of development [2-8 days of incubation; embryonic day (E)2-E8] by immunohistochemical methods. Results show that axonin-1 is first expressed at about E

The development of the human brain, including the longitudinal zoning in the diencephalon at stage 15.

Twenty-six embryos (6-11 mm) of stage 15 (approximately 33 days) were studied in detail and graphic reconstructions of three of them were prepared. Characteristic features of this stage include closed lens vesicles, presence of nasal pits, and retinal pigment. The neuromeric pattern is still visible. Each cerebral hemisphere is limited by the torus hemisphericus internally and by the di-telencephalic sulcus externally. The medial (diencephalic) eminence of the basal nuclei (previously misinterpreted by others as the lateral) had appeared in stage 14, and the lateral eminence, which is telencep

Somatosensory cerebral evoked potentials after vascular lesions of the brain-stem and diencephalon.

Clinical and electrophysiological observations are described in 7 patients with clinically well-identified vascular lesions of the brain-stem or diencephalon. In the patients of Group A with a thalamic syndrome, the somatosensory cerebral evoked potentials had a reduced voltage and increased latency on the affected side. No significant anomalies were recorded in the patients of Group B with a Wallenberg or Weber syndrome. In patients of group C with a locked-in syndrome, the cerebral evoked potentials presented marked bilateral anomalies which provided interesting data about the extension of t
