Dientamoeba fragilis is an intestinal protozoan parasite associated with gastrointestinal symptoms. This study was undertaken in a semicommunal group reported to have a high prevalence of this parasite. Stools were collected from 81 adult group members. Intestinal parasites were observed in stool specimens of 45 (56%) of the 81 adults; D. fragilis was found in 33 (41%) subjects. This paper describes the clinical findings and treatment of 26 adults with D. fragilis alone or with a commensal. Gastrointestinal symptoms were observed in 22 (85%) of infected subjects; abdominal pain and excessive f

Intestinal diseases markedly impair quality of life, with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis (UC), and Crohn's disease (CD) representing major functional and inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Dientamoeba fragilis and other intestinal parasites in these conditions and to compare the diagnostic performance of conventional and molecular methods. A total of 80 stool samples were analyzed, including 60 from patients with IBS, UC, or CD and 20 from healthy controls. Samples were examined using direct microscopy, concentration tec

Little is known about the life cycle and mode of transmission of Dientamoeba fragilis. Recently it was suggested that fecal–oral transmission of cysts may play a role in the transmission of D. fragilis. In order to establish an infection, D. fragilis is required to remain viable when exposed to the pH of the stomach. In this study, we investigated the ability of cultured trophozoites to withstand the extremes of pH. We provide evidence that trophozoites of D. fragilis are vulnerable to highly acidic conditions. We also investigated further the ultrastructure of D. fragilis cysts obtained from

To investigate the prevalence of Blastocystis and Dientamoeba fragilis in diarrhea patients and healthy individuals in Corum, Türkiye, fecal samples from 92 diarrhea patients and 50 healthy individuals were collected and evaluated using direct microscopy and molecular methods to screen for bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. The prevalence of Blastocystis was 24.6% in total and more frequent in the healthy group (30.0%). The commonly detected STs (subtypes) were ST3 (40.0%) and ST2 (34.2%). The distribution of Blastocystis STs in the healthy and diarrheal groups did not show any difference in sex

Dientamoeba fragilis is an intestinal protozoan, an inhabitant of the human gastrointestinal tract, with a worldwide distribution. The reported prevalence of D. fragilis varies worldwide in different populations between 0.3% and 82.9%, and its role as a pathogen is still unclear. The parasite has been identified in the faeces of asymptomatic patients and with different acute and chronic symptoms, like abdominal pain, diarrhoea, flatulence, nausea and vomiting. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of D. fragilis in the North-East of Italy, and the clinical improvement of sympt

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between Dientamoebafragilis colonisation and faecal calprotectin to see whether the parasite is a harmless commensal or a gut pathogen.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of previously collected stool samples.
SETTING AND PATIENTS: Two hundred stool samples originated from children aged 5-19 years with chronic abdominal pain and diarrhoea, who were seen in paediatric clinics in the Netherlands and Belgium and in whom somatic gastrointestinal disorders were excluded. Another 122 samples came from a healthy community-based reference population of the same age. Al

The clinical significance of Dientamoeba fragilis infection is controversial. We describe a case-history of a 16-year-old patient, who had suffered severe abdominal discomfort and flatulence through his lifetime. He was eventually diagnosed with D. fragilis infection, and eradication of D. fragilis with high-dose metronidazole kept him without symptoms for one year. Recurrence of the symptoms and recurrence of the D. fragilis infection was thereafter treated successfully with paromomycin.

INTRODUCTION: Dientamoeba fragilis infection in children is common, and its incidence has increased since the introduction of more sensitive molecular techniques. There is no consensus on the optimal treatment. Current medical practice in the Netherlands is to treat symptomatic children with clioquinol or metronidazole. This study attempts to obtain more information about the clinical picture of D. fragilis infection in children and to evaluate responses to both antiparasitic drugs.
METHODS: Children <18 years of age with a positive stool polymerase chain reaction test for D. fragilis infecti

Dientamoeba fragilis is a commonly occurring pathogenic protozoan often detected at higher rates in stool samples than Giardia intestinalis. However, little is known about its life cycle and mode of transmission. A total of 210 environmental and household samples were examined for the presence of D. fragilis by culture and polymerase chain reaction. Of 100 environmental samples, D. fragilis was detected only in untreated sewage. In the household samples D. fragilis was detected in 30% of household contacts tested and was not detected in any domestic pets. This study provides evidence that envi

Dientamoeba fragilis is a common intestinal parasite in humans. Transmission routes and natural host range are unknown. To determine whether pigs are hosts, we analyzed 152 fecal samples by microscopy and molecular methods. We confirmed that pigs are a natural host and harbor genotypes found in humans, suggesting zoonotic potential.

The flagellate Dientamoeba fragilis is a potential intestinal pathogen of humans. It is probably undervalued overall because its identification relies on permanent stains directly on fresh fecal specimens (Giemsa) or preserved in PVA or SAF (Trichrome or Iron-hematoxylin). During 1999 we processed stoll samples of 151 subjects and we searched also D. fragilis. We processed 105 cases of enteritis (82 children and 23 adults) and 46 samples of formed stools to investigate only for intestinal parasites (12 children and 34 adults). The microscopical observations were made on smears directly in sali

This study examined the correlation between intestinal protozoans and the bacterial microbiome in faecal samples collected from 463 patients in New Zealand who were diagnosed with gastroenteritis. In comparison to traditional microscopic diagnosis methods, Multiplexed-tandem PCR proved to be more effective in detecting intestinal parasites. Among the identified protozoans, Blastocystis sp. and Dientamoeba fragilis were the most prevalent. Notably, D. fragilis was significantly associated with an increase in the alpha-diversity of host prokaryotic microbes. Although the exact role of Blastocyst

Dientamoeba fragilis, a trichomonad parasite is usually found in the gastrointestinal tract of human, and it is known to be the cause for gastrointestinal disease. The parasite is globally distributed and mostly found in rural and urban areas. The parasite is found in humans and nonhuman primates such as the macaques, baboons, and gorillas. Often, the parasite is confused with another largely found organism in stools called Blastocystis sp. especially when seen directly under light microscopy on culture samples containing both parasites. Both sometimes are seen with two nuclei with sizes tendi

Although Dientamoeba fragilis is a common protozoan in humans, its pathogenicity and clinical significance in human diseases remain poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the frequency of D. fragilis in adult ulcerative colitis patients and to assess its relationship with clinical findings, disease characteristics, and biochemical parameters. Patient data were analysed in a prospective, single-centre, cross-sectional design. Faecal samples were consecutively collected from June to December 2024 and screened for D. fragilis positivity using polymerase chain reaction. Of the 110 patien

OBJECTIVES: The intestinal parasite Dientamoeba fragilis is a common colonizer of children in Denmark. Metronidazole has been used to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms in children colonized with D fragilis. We aimed to identify gut microbiota changes associated with D fragilis carrier status and metronidazole treatment of D fragilis-positive children.
METHODS: The fecal microbiota of 275 fecal samples from children treated with metronidazole (n = 48) or placebo (n = 48) were characterized by ribosomal DNA sequencing. Samples collected before (T1), 2 weeks after (T2), and 8 weeks (T5) after tre

Introduction: The presence of D. fragilis in feces is characterized by an asymptomatic carrier ship to a spectrum of gastrointestinal symptoms. However, a causal relationship remains to be elucidated. In this systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the eradication of D. fragilis and symptoms to establish the strength of evidence that D. fragilis in symptomatic children warrants antibiotic treatment.Areas covered: This systematic review covers a challenge in daily clinical practice. Is it necessary to test for D. fragilis in children with gastrointestinal symptoms and d

Dientamoeba fragilis is a trichomonad parasite that can infect the gastrointestinal tract of humans causing gastrointestinal disease. Little is known about its epidemiology. We evaluated the prevalence of D. fragilis by conducting a cross sectional study of an Orang Asli population in rural Malaysia. We examined stool samples from 150 participants for D. fragilis using Wheatley's trichrome stain and collected demographic data from each participant using a structured questionnaire. Five participants (3.3%) had D. fragilis in their stool; four of these were aged < 15 years; 3 were male and 2 wer

Dientamoeba fragilis is a gastrointestinal protozoan that has a worldwide distribution and is emergeing as a common cause of diarrhea. As D. fragilis has a propensity to cause chronic illness with symptoms similar to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) it is not surprising that some patients with D. fragilis are misdiagnosed as having IBS. In contrast to most other pathogenic protozoa very little is known about its life cycle, epidemiology and mode of transmission. What role animal reservoirs play in the transmission of this parasite is unknown. Consequently we undertook a prospective study to dete
