Large artery stiffening and mortality in a rat model of early vascular remodeling induced by intrauterine growth restriction and a high-fat diet.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and exposure to a high-fat diet (HFD) independently increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and hyperlipidemia. In our previous studies, IUGR increased blood pressure and promoted vascular remodeling and stiffness in early life, a finding that persisted and was augmented by a maternal HFD through postnatal day (PND) 60. The impact of these findings with aging and the development of hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis remain unknown. We hypothesized that the previously noted impact of IUGR on hypertension, vascular remodeling, and hyperlipidemia w

Intrauterine growth restriction combined with a maternal high-fat diet increased adiposity and serum corticosterone levels in adult rat offspring.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and fetal exposure to a maternal high-fat diet (HFD) independently increase the risk of developing obesity in adulthood. Excess glucocorticoids increase obesity. We hypothesized that surgically induced IUGR combined with an HFD would increase adiposity and glucocorticoids more than in non-IUGR offspring combined with the same HFD, findings that would persist despite weaning to a regular diet. Non-IUGR (N) and IUGR (I) rat offspring from dams fed either regular rat chow (R) or an HFD (H) were weaned to either a regular rat chow or an HFD. For non-IUGR and

Time-restricted feeding has a limited effect on hepatic lipid accumulation, inflammation and fibrosis in a choline-deficient high-fat diet-induced murine NASH model.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) occurs worldwide and is characterized by lipid accumulation in hepatocytes, hepatic inflammation, fibrosis, and an increased risk of cirrhosis. Although a major proportion of NASH patients exhibit obesity and insulin resistance, 20% lack a high body mass and are categorized as "non-obese NASH". Time-restricted feeding (TRF), limiting daily food intake within certain hours, improves obesity, lipid metabolism, and liver inflammation. Here, we determined whether TRF affects NASH pathology induced by a choline-deficient high-fat diet (CDAHFD), which does not inv

Micronutrient Inadequacy Differs by Intake of Fat Amount and Class Among Adults That Consume a Restricted Carbohydrate Diet: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007-2018.

BACKGROUND: Restricted carbohydrate diets remain among the most popular for weight loss and general health improvement. Recent evidence demonstrates that carbohydrate restricted diets are low in overall diet quality, yet their association with micronutrient inadequacy has not been well characterized at a population-level in adults in the United States. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of not meeting daily micronutrient recommendations in US adults that met the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges and those who restricted carbohydrate intake to <45% energy, and to examine the effe

Apple polyphenol extract modulates bile acid metabolism and gut microbiota by regulating the circadian rhythms in daytime-restricted high fat diet feeding C57BL/6 male mice.

The homeostasis of circadian clock linked to bile acid (BA) metabolism and gut microbiota has profound benefits in maintaining the health status of the host. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevention and regulation of apple polyphenol extract (APE) on BA metabolism and gut microbiota by means of modulation of circadian rhythms in mice. Eighty male C57BL/6 mice were randomized into four groups: 24-hour ad libitum standard chow group (AC), ad libitum HFD group (AF), restricted 12 h daytime HFD feeding group (DF), and daytime HFD feeding with APE treatment group (DP). Five weeks lat

Male and Female Intrauterine Growth-Restricted Offspring Differ in Blood Pressure, Renal Function, and Glucose Homeostasis Responses to a Postnatal Diet High in Fat and Sugar.

It is well established that inadequate nutrition during fetal life followed by postnatal overabundance programs adiposity and glucose intolerance. Studies addressing sexual dimorphism in developmental responses to a dietary mismatch are limited; the effect on blood pressure and renal function is understudied. Therefore, this study tested the hypothesis that a mismatch of prenatal and postnatal nutrition heightens cardiorenal and metabolic risk, outcomes that may vary by sex. Male and female offspring from sham-operated (control) or reduced uterine perfusion dams (growth restricted) were fed re

Changes in weight and metabolic health during and after cessation of a time-restricted feeding plus aerobic training in Swiss mice fed a high-fat diet.

Obesity is a chronic disease, representing a significant health problem worldwide. Unhealthy eating habits and sedentarism are key contributors to the development of obesity. Dietary and exercise strategies are the first-line therapies for weight loss or maintenance and have proven effective in controlling weight. However, long-term adherence is challenging, and rapid weight regain often follows intervention cessation. In mice, time-restricted feeding (TRF) and exercise (EXE) independently prevent weight gain and maintain metabolic health, yet weight regain is observed upon cessation. Whether

Intrauterine growth restriction combined with a maternal high-fat diet increases hepatic cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein receptor activity in rats.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and maternal consumption of a high-saturated-fat diet (HFD) increase the risk of hypercholesterolemia, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Many pregnant women eat a HFD, thus exposing the fetus to a HFD in utero. The cumulative effect of in utero exposure to IUGR and a HFD on offspring cholesterol levels remains unknown. Furthermore, little is known about the mechanism through which IUGR and maternal HFD consumption increase cholesterol. We hypothesize that IUGR combined with a maternal HFD would increase offspring serum and hepatic cholesterol ac

The efficacy of carbohydrate-restricted diets on reducing visceral and liver fat in individuals with overweight and obesity: a systematic review and pairwise and network meta-analyses.

The current systematic review aimed to investigate the efficacy of carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRDs) for improving fat distribution in individuals with overweight or obesity. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception to April 2025. Randomized trials investigating the effects of any mode of CRD, including moderate (MCD), low (LCD), or very low (VLCD) carbohydrate diets, as compared with a control group (CON) or other dietary interventions such as caloric restriction (CR), low-fat diets (LFD), or intermittent fasting (IF), were included. Angiogenesis-independent VEGF signaling enhances exercise capacity by increasing fat oxidation in mice fed sulfur amino acid-restricted diets.

Dietary restriction of the sulfur-containing amino acids methionine and cysteine (SAAR) has numerous metabolic benefits including enhanced body composition and insulin sensitivity. Many of these benefits parallel those associated with endurance exercise. How SAAR impacts skeletal muscle remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that one week of SAAR in sedentary young male mice increases endurance exercise capacity. SAAR increased lipid oxidation at rest, delaying the onset of carbohydrate utilization during exercise. SAAR increased expression of fatty acid catabolism genes, especially

Maternal manganese restriction increases susceptibility to high-fat diet-induced dyslipidemia and altered adipose function in WNIN male rat offspring.

Growth in utero is largely a reflection of nutrient and oxygen supply to the foetus. We studied the effects of Mn restriction per se, maternal Mn restriction, and postnatal high-fat feeding in modulating body composition, lipid metabolism and adipocyte function in Wistar/NIN (WNIN) rat offspring. Female weanling, WNIN rats received ad libitum for 4 months, a control or Mn-restricted diet and were mated with control males. Some restricted mothers were rehabilitated with control diet from conception (MnRC) or parturition (MnRP), and their offspring were raised on control diet. Some restricted of

Combining Time-Restricted Wheel Running and Feeding During the Light Phase Increases Running Intensity Under High-Fat Diet Conditions Without Altering the Total Amount of Daily Running.

Excess caloric intake and insufficient physical activity are the two major drivers underlying the global obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus epidemics. However, circadian misalignment of caloric intake and physical activity, as commonly experienced by nightshift workers, can also have detrimental effects on body weight and glucose homeostasis. We have previously reported that combined restriction of eating and voluntary wheel running to the inactive phase (i.e., a rat model for circadian misalignment) shifted liver and muscle clock rhythms by ~12 h and prevented the reduction in the amplitude

Caloric Restriction Alleviates Anxiety-Like Behaviors by Mitigating Neuroinflammation and Insulin Signaling Dysregulation in a High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesity Mouse Model.

BACKGROUND: Caloric restriction (CR) is reported to promote longevity and improve metabolism in different species, such as rodents and flies. However, limited studies have examined the effects of CR on obesity-associated psychiatric disorders and the underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effects of CR on obesity-associated anxiety-like behavior in mice fed on a high-fat diet (HFD) and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice (n = 24) were randomized into the standard diet group and the HFD group (fed on an HFD for 8 wk to induce obesity

High-fat diet restriction to adult male mice maintains normal body weight but leads to liver impairment by disrupting mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.

Dietary restriction (DR) delays aging and supports health primarily through its effects on mitochondrial function. Conversely, a high-fat diet (HFD) with excess calories promotes obesity and health risks via mitochondrial dysfunction. However, the role of an HFD in the benefits of DR remains unclear. This study investigated whether sustainable and intermittent DR with an HFD positively affects liver and heart health. Mice were assigned to four groups: chow diet ad libitum (CTR), HFD ad libitum (H), 60% HFD intake (HDR), and intermittent HFD restriction with weight cycling (WC). The results sho

Caloric restriction ameliorates high-fat diet induced cognitive deficits through attenuating neuroinflammation via the TREM2-PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

Prolonged high-fat diet (HFD) feeding impairs cognitive function in rodents. However, the mechanism of caloric restriction (CR) for remedying HFD-induced cognitive dysfunction remains elusive. In the present study, we investigated the effect of CR on HFD-induced cognitive dysfunction and its possible mechanism. BALB/c mice were fed with HFD for 16 weeks and subsequently subjected to CR for 12 weeks. After cognitive function was evaluated by behavioral tests such as Morris water maze and three-chamber paradigm tests, the mice were sacrificed. The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus were rapidly h

Methionine Restriction Regulates Cognitive Function in High-Fat Diet-Fed Mice: Roles of Diurnal Rhythms of SCFAs Producing- and Inflammation-Related Microbes.

SCOPE: Methionine restriction (MR) is known to potently alleviate inflammation and improve gut microbiome in obese mice. The gut microbiome exhibits diurnal rhythmicity in composition and function, and this, in turn, drives oscillations in host metabolism. High-fat diet (HFD) strongly altered microbiome diurnal rhythmicity, however, the role of microbiome diurnal rhythmicity in mediating the improvement effects of MR on obesity-related metabolic disorders remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: 10-week-old male C57BL/6J mice are fed a low-fat diet or HFD for 4 weeks, followed with a full diet (

Consumption of a high-fat diet does not potentiate the deleterious effects on lipid and protein levels and body development in rats subjected to maternal protein restriction.

Maternal undernutrition may cause injuries in several organs of the offspring, as well as lead to diseases in adulthood. Obesity and/or the consumption of a high-fat diet may also induce metabolic and cardiorespiratory diseases. We hypothesized that the consumption of a post-weaning high-fat diet would potentiate the deleterious effects of maternal protein undernutrition. This study evaluated the effects of the association of a low-protein diet during gestation and lactation with a post-weaning high-fat diet on the biochemical and ventilatory parameters of rats. The Divergent Effect of Maternal Protein Restriction during Pregnancy and Postweaning High-Fat Diet Feeding on Blood Pressure and Adiposity in Adult Mouse Offspring.

Obesity is a growing health crisis of pandemic proportions. Numerous animal and human studies have confirmed that obesity and related metabolic abnormalities, such as insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease, may be programmed during development by adverse maternal nutrition. We previously documented that offspring of female mice who were protein-restricted during pregnancy alone had no alterations to their body weights, but did display a considerable reduction in food intake, a finding which was linked to reduced expression levels of appetite regulatory genes in the hypothalamus. Whether
