Diet Quality, Healthy Dietary Restrictions, and Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Food Deserts Among the Elderly in Spain.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food deserts are areas characterized by limited access to affordable and healthy food, often due to significant distances from supermarkets-exceeding 1.6 km in urban areas and 16 km in rural settings. These spatial limitations exacerbate health and socioeconomic disparities. This study aimed to assess diet quality and explore the barriers influencing dietary behaviors among individuals aged 60 and older residing in food deserts in Aragón, Spain. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study using a phenomenological approach was conducted, complemented by descriptive analyse

An AI-driven multivariate approach for personalized healthy eating recommendations aligned with sustainable healthy diet food-group guidelines.

Translating nutritional recommendations into practical day-to-day meal choices remains a challenging task, particularly when personalization, nutritional adequacy, dietary diversity, allergies, seasonal availability, and food-group constraints must be simultaneously satisfied. This study presents and evaluates the PLAN'EAT Nutrition Advisor, an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven, expert rule-based nutrition recommendation system, designed to generate personalized and nutritionally balanced weekly meal plans aligned with established dietary guidelines and food-group recommendations derived fro

The Healthy Nordic Diet and Mediterranean Diet and Incidence of Disability 10 Years Later in Home-Dwelling Old Adults.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Diet has a major impact on a person's health. However, limited information exists on the long-term role of the whole diet on disability. We investigated the association of the healthy Nordic diet and the Mediterranean diet with incident disability 10 years later. DESIGN: Longitudinal, with a follow-up of 10 years. SETTINGS/PARTICIPANTS: A total of 962 home-dwelling men and women from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, mean age 61.6 years, who were free of disability at baseline. MEASUREMENTS: At baseline, 2001-2004, the Nordic diet score (NDS) and modified Mediterranean

The association between a healthy and sustainable diet based on the planetary health diet index (PHDI) and the odds of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a widespread metabolic bone disorder among postmenopausal women and is characterized by reduced bone mineral density and an elevated risk of fractures. Beyond the role of individual nutrients in bone health, increasing attention has been paid to the broader implications of dietary patterns for environmental sustainability. Food production systems, particularly those heavily dependent on animal-based foods, are among the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the need for dietary approaches that support both human health and environmental protect

The Effects of a Hypocaloric Diet on Diet-Induced Thermogenesis and Blood Hormone Response in Healthy Male Adults: A Pilot Study.

Calorie restriction is a common strategy for weight loss and management. Consumption of food and nutrients stimulates diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT), as well as pancreatic and gastrointestinal hormone secretion that may regulate energy metabolism. Yet, little is known about the impact of hypocaloric diets on energy metabolism-related parameters. In this study, we assessed the effects of hypocaloric diets on hormonal variance in relation to DIT in healthy adults. Ten healthy male adults were enrolled in a randomized crossover study comprising three meal trials. Each subject was given a meal o

Healthy diet intervention reverses the progression of NASH through gut microbiota modulation.

The link between gut microbiota and diet is crucial in the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This study underscores the essential role of a healthy diet in preventing and treating NASH by reversing obesity, lipidemia, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Moreover, the supplementation of functional food or drug to the diet can provide additional advantages by inhibiting hepatic inflammation through the modulation of the hepatic inflammasome signaling pathway and partially mediating the gut microbiota and lipopolysaccharide signaling pathway. This study highlights the importance of a

Association between a Periconception Healthy Plant-Based Diet and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Plant-based diets are increasingly popular and may improve cardiometabolic health, but their association with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) is unclear, and dietary patterns are influenced by food access. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether adherence to plant-based dietary patterns was associated with APOs and whether the association varied by neighborhood food access. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis using data from the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study-Monitoring Mothers-to-Be cohort. Diet scores for the newer Healthy Plant-Based Diet Index (hPDI) and more establishe

A Heart-Healthy Diet for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention: Where Are We Now?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The relationship between cardiovascular health and diet is evolving. Lifestyle modifications including diet changes are the primary approach in managing cardiometabolic risk factors. Thus, understanding different diets and their impact on cardiovascular health is important in guiding primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Yet, there are many barriers and limitations to adopting a heart healthy diet. RECENT FINDINGS: Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and lean protein sources, with minimization/avoidance of processed foods, tr

Impact of diet on 24-hour intragastric pH profile in healthy horses.

An electrode incorporated into a polyethylene hose was introduced under endoscopic control into the stomach of six fasting adult horses for long-lasting pH measurements. The intragastric pH was recorded every four seconds for a period of 24 hours. The Warmblood horses were assigned randomly to receive hay ad libitum (H group); 1.5 kg hay/100 kg BW/day and 1 kg concentrate/100 kg BW/ day (C group) or protocol C plus 75 g pectin-lecithin supplement/100 kg BW/day (P group). The horses were adapted to each diet for 14 days. The 24-hour median pH value for protocol H (2.69) was significantly lower

Perspective: The Place of Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese in Sustainable Healthy Diets in France.

The 4 pillars of sustainable healthy diets are health, economics, society, and the environment. The place of milk, yogurt, and cheese in the sustainability framework was examined using publicly available government agency databases from France. Nutrient composition data came from CIQUAL (Centre d'Information sur la Qualité des Aliments). Data on greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) and total environmental impact of foods came from Agribalyse. Data on food costs came from published reports. Dietary intakes came from the INCA 3 study (Étude Individuelle Nationale des Consommations Alimentaires) of Fr

A participatory food environment study on healthy diets in Southern and Eastern Zambia.

The food environment plays an important role in shaping diets, yet evidence in Zambia is limited. Traditional fermented foods such as mabisi, a Zambian traditional fermented milk, are beneficial and recommended as part of a healthy diet in the Zambian food-based dietary guidelines. Using components of Photovoice, this study explored factors influencing the consumption of healthy diets in the urban and rural food environments of two Zambian districts, Choma and Chipata, which differ in mabisi consumption. Fifty-seven participants shared their perspectives, revealing that despite the differences

Food security and barriers to healthy diet in pregnancies with or at risk for hypertensive disorders.

Food insecurity is a major public health issue in the United States. The aim of this study was to examine maternal food insecurity and barriers to healthy diet in pregnant individuals with or at risk for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). Among 53 pregnant individuals, 32.1% reported experiencing food insecurity. Food insecure individuals were significantly more likely to report barriers involving skills to plan/cook healthy foods, transportation, and home appliances/space. As healthy eating is one of the safest treatments for hypertension in pregnancy, it is essential to identify and

Diet at birth is critical for healthy growth, independent of effects on the gut microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Colostrum is the first milk for a newborn. Its high content in microbiota shaping compounds and its intake at the time of gut microbiota seeding suggests colostrum may be critical in the establishment of a healthy microbiota. There is also accumulating evidence on the importance of the gut microbiota for healthy growth. Here, we aimed to investigate the contribution of colostrum, and colostrum-induced microbiota to growth promotion. Addressing this question is highly significant because (1) globally, less than half of the newborns are fully colostrum fed (2) the evidence for the im

The evolution of the heart-healthy diet for vascular health: A walk through time.

The rate of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality reduction in the United States has plateaued recently, despite the development of novel preventive pharmacotherapies, increased access to care, and healthcare spending. This is largely due to American's poor dietary patterns and practices causing increasing trends in the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. For decades, dietary guidelines on 'healthy diets' to reduce CVD risk, grounded in epidemiological research, have been nationally distributed to Americans. In this review, we highlight landmark events in modern nutrition scie

Hen egg only diets support healthy aging in adult mice.

Hen eggs (eggs) are a conventional food, known to contain the nutrients required for the growth of chicken embryos. These eggs are rich in important proteins and fats, with a very low amount of carbohydrate, and include all of the vitamins and minerals needed for the development of mice. We found that mice fed eggs grew to the same weight as mice fed a normal chow diet (ND) and remained healthy until the 20-months. As expected, the serological indicators of fat content were higher in egg-only mice than in ND mice. However, surprisingly the serum glucose levels in the egg-only mice were nearly

Back to Basics: The Effect of Healthy Diet and Exercise on Chronic Disease Management.

INTRODUCTION: The increase in obesity rates in the U.S. and other less developed industrial countries have led to a worldwide epidemic of chronic disease states. Increased obesity rates are implicated in the treatment failures for illnesses such as coronary artery disease, diabetes, heart failure, hypertension and cancer. Effective prevention of obesity through diet and exercise contributes to the successful medical management of multiple chronic disease states. OBJECTIVE: Review the last 10 years of literature (2006-2016) on the effects of diet and exercise as they relate to the prevention o
