The Mediterranean diet: rationale and evidence for its benefit.

There is now a consensus about recommending the Mediterranean diet pattern for the prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD) and cancer. The most important aspect of this treatment decision, in contrast with the pharmacologic prevention of CHD (including cholesterol lowering), is that the Mediterranean diet has a striking effect on survival. The main explanation for this is that the Mediterranean diet is protective not only against CHD and cancers but also against other various chronic diseases. Furthermore, the Mediterranean diet appears to be effective at reducing atherosclerosis and the ri

Economic evaluations of the Mediterranean diet: a systematic review.

CONTEXT: The Mediterranean diet (MD) is widely recognized for its health benefits and increasing relevance in health system planning and dietary policy. Understanding the costs and cost-effectiveness of MD adherence is critical for informing public health policy and dietary interventions. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review summarizes the evidence on the economic implications of the MD, distinguishing between studies assessing health outcome-based cost-effectiveness and those examining the monetary costs of adhering to the MD for households. METHODS: This review was conducted in accordance wit

The Effect of Mediterranean Diet on Thyroid Gland Activity.

The main goal of this research was to determine whether there is a correlation between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (assessed by the Mediterranean Diet Serving Score (MDSS)) and parameters indicating thyroid gland activity, such as concentration of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroid hormones (free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4)), thyroglobulin (Tg), antibodies to thyroid proteins (thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb)), and calcitonin (CT) in plasma and serum samples. An additional objective was to investigate whether there are d

Health impact of Mediterranean diets in food at work.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of diet mediterranisation, in a food-at-work context, and its consequence on metabolic syndrome in a mid-age unselected healthy male population group. DESIGN: One-year longitudinal intervention study. Physical exercise was not modified. SETTING: All workers of the Santiago division of 'Maestranza Diesel', a metal-mechanic company servicing the mining industry, were invited to participate. SUBJECTS: Initially, 145 workers of a total of 171, of average age 39 years, accepted to participate (sixteen women and 129 men). A subgroup of ninety-six men fully c

Beyond MIND and Mediterranean Diets: Designing a Diet to Optimize Parkinson's Disease Outcomes.

Background: A growing body of evidence suggests that diet can modify Parkinson's disease (PD) outcomes, although there is disagreement about what should be included and excluded in such a diet. Existing evidence suggests that adherence to the MIND and Mediterranean (MEDI) diets are associated with reduced PD symptoms, but only a few variables from the adherence scales are responsible for the statistically observed improvement. Objectives: The goal was to use patient-reported outcomes in a large cohort to identify the foods and dietary patterns (PRO diet) most strongly associated with the fewes

Mediterranean diet and health outcomes in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

OBJECTIVES: The clinical relevance of Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and determinants shaping adherence across disease phenotypes remain largely unexplored in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM). In this study, we evaluated MedDiet adherence across IIM subtypes, identified factors associated with it, and examined its association with patient-reported health outcomes. METHODS: Adults with self-reported specialist-diagnosed IIM participating in the international Collating the Voice of People with Autoimmune Diseases survey were included. Mediterranean diet adherence was assessed using the 14

Mediterranean diet impact on cardiovascular diseases: a narrative review.

: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for more than 17 million deaths per year worldwide. It has been estimated that the influence of lifestyle on CVD mortality amounts to 13.7% for smoking, 13.2% for poor diet, and 12% for inactive lifestyle. These results deeply impact both the healthy status of individuals and their skills in working. The impact of CVD on productivity loss accounts for the 24% in total costs for CVD management.Mediterranean diet (MedD) can positively impact on natural history of CVD. It is characterized by a relatively high consumption of inexpensive and genuine food such

Factors associated with Mediterranean diet adherence in Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Little is known about the importance of the Mediterranean Diet (MeDi) and dietary intake as environmental neuroprotective factors in Huntington's disease (HD); so, we evaluated and analyzed the prevalence and factors associated with MeDi adherence, and dietary intake in HD. METHODS: Spanish participants of the European Huntington Disease Network (EHDN) Registry study diagnosed with HD or premanifest HD gene carriers were included from June 2012 to August 2013. Self-reported dietary intake was collected by 3-day dietary record, MeDi adherence was assessed by 0-9 range (propo

Mediterranean diet and essential tremor. A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDi) has been related to lower Alzheimer's disease risk. Some dietary factors have been studied in patients with essential tremor (ET), but the MeDi's effect has not been investigated. METHODS: Adherence to the MeDi was calculated from a food frequency questionnaire administered in a case-control study of environmental epidemiology of ET in the New York Tri-State area. Logistic regression models were used to examine whether adherence to the MeDi predicted ET (vs. control) outcome. The models adjusted for age, gender, ethnicity, educatio

Mediterranean diet and health: biological importance of olive oil.

Olive oil, the main fatty component of the Mediterranean diet, is characterized by consisting of monounsaturated fatty acids as well as by its elevated content in antioxidant agents. This oil exhibits numerous biological functions which are beneficial for the state of health. A diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids provides an adequate fluidity to the biological membranes, diminishing the hazard of lipid peroxidation which affects polyunsaturated fatty acids. Moreover, the antioxidants present in olive oil are able to scavenge free radicals and afford an adequate protection against peroxida

Diet and Pediatric Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Mediterranean Countries.

Background: The increased intake of FODMAP (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyol) rich foods has been suggested as a possible trigger of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). Despite the high FODMAP content, the Mediterranean diet (MD) appears to have beneficial effects on health. Our aim was to evaluate whether the prevalence of FGIDs in different Mediterranean countries may be influenced by FODMAP consumption and adherence to the MD. Methods: A school-based, cross-sectional, multicenter study was performed in six countries in the Mediterranean are

The Mediterranean diet revisited: evidence of its effectiveness grows.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The optimal dietary strategy for the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases remains a challenging and a highly relevant preventive health issue. In recent years, there have been ongoing investigations of the effectiveness of the Mediterranean diet in preventing the development of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. Initial research suggested that the consumption of diets high in vegetable oil, fish, and complex grains and carbohydrates conferred a benefit in reducing the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this review is to examine the evidence i

Regional variations in Mediterranean diet adherence: a sociodemographic and lifestyle analysis across Mediterranean and non-Mediterranean regions within the MEDIET4ALL project.

INTRODUCTION: The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is acknowledged for its health advantages; however, compliance with its principles differs by region and is influenced by geographical, cultural, economic, and life-style factors. This research examines regional differences in sociodemographic and lifestyle factors between Mediterranean (MC) and non-Mediterranean (NMC) countries, with a particular focus on adherence to the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle, as well as the associated barriers in each region. METHODS: The MEDIET4ALL international survey was conducted across 10 countries, and data we

Mediterranean diet and oral health: is there an association? A scoping review.

As the Mediterranean diet (MDi) has demonstrated a powerful preventative effect on various medical conditions, a positive effect on oral health may also be speculated. Tooth loss, pain or tooth mobility may discourage the consumption of specific food types, affecting MDi adherence. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between adherence to MDi and oral health in adult populations. The study protocol was registered in Open Science Framework (https://osf.io/vxbnh/) and adhered to PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The principal research questions were: (1) Does better oral health enable a

The Role of the Mediterranean Diet in Assisted Reproduction: A Literature Review.

The Mediterranean Diet, characterized by high consumption of plant-based foods, olive oil, moderate intake of fish and poultry, and low consumption of red meat and processed foods, has been suggested to improve assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes. This narrative review aimed to summarize and synthesize the evidence from observational studies on the associations between preconception adherence to the Mediterranean Diet and ART outcomes. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases were searched to identify relevant studies. Seven observational

Effects of Agricultural Intensification on Mediterranean Diets: A Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Mediterranean diets (MedDiets) are linked to substantial health benefits. However, there is also growing evidence that the intensification of food production over the last 60 years has resulted in nutritionally relevant changes in the composition of foods that may augment the health benefits of MedDiets. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize, summarize, and critically evaluate the currently available evidence for changes in food composition resulting from agricultural intensification practices and their potential impact on the health benefits of MedDiets. METHODS: We summarized/synthesized

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet and gastric cancer risk in Italy.

We investigated gastric cancer risk in relation to the adherence to the Mediterranean diet using data from two case-control studies conducted in Italy between 1985 and 2007, including 999 incidents, histologically confirmed gastric cancers and 2,628 controls admitted to hospital for acute non-neoplastic diseases. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed using the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) based on nine of the major characteristics of the Mediterranean diet in the overall dataset. The Mediterranean Dietary Pattern adherence index (MDP) and the Mediterranean Adequacy Index (MAI) wer
