BACKGROUND: Plant-based diets are increasingly popular and may improve cardiometabolic health, but their association with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) is unclear, and dietary patterns are influenced by food access.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether adherence to plant-based dietary patterns was associated with APOs and whether the association varied by neighborhood food access.
METHODS: This is a secondary analysis using data from the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study-Monitoring Mothers-to-Be cohort. Diet scores for the newer Healthy Plant-Based Diet Index (hPDI) and more establishe

Vegetarian diets may lower symptomatic gallstone disease via cholesterol lowering. This study aimed to examine the risk of symptomatic gallstone disease (GSD) in Taiwanese vegetarians vs. nonvegetarians in a prospective cohort and to explore if this association is related to cholesterol concentration. We prospectively followed 4839 participants, and in the 29,295 person-years of follow-up, 104 new incident GSD cases were confirmed. Diet was assessed through a validated food frequency questionnaire. Symptomatic GSD was ascertained through linkage to the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research

We report a case of a 60-year-old man who struggled with frequent migraines for 12.5 years, which were refractory to all conventional therapies. Six months before initial consultation, these migraines become chronic. The patient was then advised to follow the Low Inflammatory Foods Everyday (LIFE) diet, a nutrient-dense, dark green leafy vegetable-rich, whole food plant-based diet. Within 2 months, his headache frequency declined from 18 to 24 headache days per month to 1, and he discontinued his preventive and abortive migraine medications. After 3 months, the patient had no headaches. These

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analyses to evaluate the impact of plant-based diet (PBD) on chronic kidney disease (CKD).
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed and Embase was conducted from inception to August 2023 to evaluate the association between adopting a PBD and the incidence, progression, and mortality of CKD. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using a random effects model. This meta-analysis was preregistered in the PROSPERO.
RESULTS: A total of 121,927 participants were included, aged between 18 and 74 years, and were f

INTRODUCTION: Being overweight, with a body mass index (BMI) ≥25, is associated with multiple comorbidities, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). A plant-based diet, such as a vegetarian or lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, serves as a preventive strategy for CKD in patients. We hypothesized that a vegetarian diet lowers the occurrence of CKD in overweight subjects.
METHODS: The retrospective study was performed in Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital by a self-paid health exam. Age younger than 40 years old and the subjects without sufficient biochemical or hematologic results were excluded. The incidence of

BACKGROUND: Plant-based diets have many health benefits, including a lower risk of fatal prostate cancer, and greater environmental sustainability. However, less is known regarding the impact of plant-based diets on quality of life among individuals diagnosed with prostate cancer. The authors' objective was to examine the relationship between plant-based diet indices postdiagnosis with quality of life.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 3505 participants in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (1986-2016) with nonmetastatic prostate cancer. Food-frequency questionnaires were

A 40-year-old female teacher presented to the rheumatology clinic in 2003 with nonspecific back, knees, and right ankle pain. She was subsequently diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and was taking methotrexate to control her disease. Over the years, her symptoms were mostly under control. However, in 2018, after adopting a whole food plant-based diet free of added salt, oil, and sugar, she was able to stop taking methotrexate. She was discharged from the rheumatology clinic and has remained symptom-free since. The available literature on managing psoriatic arthritis with diet shows that less t

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this narrative review, we provide an overview of how adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern can complement traditional treatment strategies for psoriasis, acne, and hidradenitis suppurativa. We emphasize the importance of an integrated approach, with dietary interventions as a key component of holistic patient care.
RECENT FINDINGS: Psoriasis, acne, and hidradenitis suppurativa are immune-mediated chronic diseases marked by systemic inflammation, with genetic and environmental factors influencing their onset. The Mediterranean diet, rich in plant-based foods with a

BACKGROUND: Plant-based dietary patterns are becoming increasingly popular due to environmental and health impacts, yet there are few studies exploring the relationship between plant-based dietary patterns and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in different genetic backgrounds.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate how plant-based dietary pattern and genetic susceptibility independently or jointly affect VTE and its subtypes of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.
METHODS: A total of 183,510 participants who were White British ethnicity background and free of VTE at baseline

Coronary artery disease (CAD), a primary component of cardiovascular diseases, is one of the top contributors to mortality rates worldwide. In 2021, dietary risk was estimated to be attributed to 6.58 million cardiovascular deaths. Plant-based diets (PBDs), which encourage higher consumption of plant foods and lower intake of animal-based foods, have been shown to reduce the risk of CAD by up to 29% when compared to non-vegetarian diets in a meta-analysis. This article aims to summarize the array of PBDs and compare them with conventional Western diets that include meat. We review the various

Plant-based diets and veganism are receiving increased attention for many reasons. Leading international nutrition organizations have determined that a well-planned and balanced plant-based diet is protective against such chronic diseases as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Many physicians may be unaware of its potential advantages, especially in the field of dermatology, and for this reason the vegan diet is often discouraged. Although the literature about diet in dermatology is limited, the introduction of foods of plant origin, vitamin B12 supplements, and elimination of anim

Global climate change driven by human activity is a pressing concern. Recent medical literature highlights the negative consequences of climate change on human health, including changing patterns and rising rates of global infectious diseases. Livestock production and animal agriculture are large contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, and rising rates of antimicrobial resistance are propagated by antibiotic use in livestock feed. Despite this, the global demand for animal-based food production continues to rapidly grow. Furthermore, meat consumption is linked to negative health consequences

Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent inflammatory condition that affects multiple organ systems and significantly impairs the quality of life in women of reproductive age. While conventional hormonal therapies may alleviate symptoms of endometriosis, they are also frequently associated with intolerable side effects. As a result, there is growing interest in complementary, non-invasive strategies to support long-term disease management. This review explores the potential of plant-based diets and personalized nutrition as adjunctive approaches in endometriosis care. Plant-based dietary

ImportanceAs the incidence of cancer and metabolic disorders, such as obesity, concurrently rise, there has been increasing awareness of the pervasive effect of nutrition. The whole foods plant-based diet (WFPBD) and ketogenic diet (KD) have gained popularity in oncology, and this topic is increasingly permeating clinical dialogue.ObservationsDietary intake is associated with multiple pathways involved in carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Consumption of a plant-enriched diet is associated with reduced cancer incidence and is recommended by dietary guidelines for cancer prevention. Despite
