An example of social activities by registered dietitians: development of recipes for cook-chilled meals to be delivered to kidney disease patients in the conservative treatment and maintenance dialysis stages.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have indicated the effectiveness of medical nutrition therapy for kidney diseases in various stages. However, compliance with dietary therapy over a long period is not easy for patients living alone, elderly patients, and disabled patients, and the concern of registered dietitians working at medical facilities has become increased. Our activities started in the form of social services, developing recipes for cook-chilled foods, collaborating with a firm that had been providing a meal-delivery service, for patients with kidney diseases. METHODS: Our subjects were outpa

Dietary habits are useful as risk factors for primary open-angle glaucoma while controlling for heredity and metabolic disease.

BACKGROUND: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) has been associated with cardiovascular and dietary risk factors. AIM: This study aimed to determine whether dietary practices correlate with POAG, after controlling for the most important risk factors, namely heredity and cardiovascular risk factors (diabetes mellitus, hypertension and dyslipidaemia). METHODS: Two samples of equal sizes (N = 100) were randomly selected from glaucoma outpatient services with and without POAG. Dietary habits and risk factors for POAG were recorded. RESULTS: Clinical cases can be discerned from controls in 90.5%

Maternal dietary diversity and its correlates in a semi-urban municipality of Nepal: A cross-sectional study.

Maternal dietary diversity is vital for the health of both mothers and children during lactation, yet it is often compromised in low- and middle-income countries. This cross-sectional study among 251 lactating mothers in Tarakeswor Municipality, Nepal, assessed dietary diversity using a 24-hour dietary recall and the Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) indicator. Overall, 68.1% of mothers achieved the minimum dietary diversity (≥5 of 10 food groups), with a mean score of 5.03 ± 1.25. In multivariable analysis, higher odds of meeting MDD were observed among mothers with secondary or hig

Nutritional status and cancer survival among rural Chinese women: biological mechanisms, health disparities, and translational opportunities.

Cancer remains a major cause of premature mortality among women worldwide, and its burden is particularly pronounced in rural China, where delayed diagnosis, uneven access to oncology services, and nutritional vulnerability may jointly affect survival. This narrative review synthesizes mechanistic, clinical, and population-level evidence on the relationship between nutritional status and cancer survival among rural Chinese women, with a focus on breast, cervical, gastric, and colorectal cancers. It first outlines the epidemiological profile of major female cancers in rural China and summarizes

Some intrusions in dietary reports by fourth-grade children are based on specific memories: data from a validation study of the effect of interview modality.

In dietary recall for a specified target period, an intrusion denotes an item reported eaten that was not consumed during that period. Intrusions may denote items available during the specified period, items consumed during other periods, or items from general knowledge of dietary intake. To investigate a cognitive basis of intrusions, we analyzed data from a dietary-reporting validation study in which 69 fourth-grade children were observed eating 2 school meals (breakfast and lunch) and interviewed that evening about that day's intake in person or by telephone. Of 450 items reported eaten for

Expanding the Treatment Team: What Is the Role for Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Wound Care, and Nutritional Support in Systemic Sclerosis?

The optimal systemic sclerosis (SSc) care plan includes an occupational therapist and physical therapist as well as wound care experts and a registered dietitian if indicated. Screening instruments for functional and work disability, hand and mouth limitations, malnutrition, and dietary intake can identify the need for ancillary support services. Telemedicine can assist in developing effective ancillary treatment plans. Reimbursement for services may limit access for patients with SSc to expand their care team but a focus on prevention rather than management of damage is recognized as an impor
