Tensor-valued diffusion magnetic resonance imaging in a radiotherapy setting.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diagnostic information about cell density variations and microscopic tissue anisotropy can be gained from tensor-valued diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These properties of tissue microstructure have the potential to become novel imaging biomarkers for radiotherapy response. However, tensor-valued diffusion encoding is more demanding than conventional encoding, and its compatibility with MR scanners that are dedicated to radiotherapy has not been established. Thus, our aim was to investigate the feasibility of tensor-valued diffusion MRI with radiotherapy ded

Diffusion-weighted and conventional magnetic resonance imaging in cerebral cryptococcoma.

A case of cryptococcoma involving the right cerebral hemisphere is reported. The diffusion-weighted image shows hypointensity in the central cavity of the cryptococcoma, while apparent diffusion coefficient maps show hyperintensity. The imaging features of an intracerebral cryptococcoma mimic that of a central necrotic brain tumor, rather than a pyogenic brain abscess.

Small centrum ovale infarcts on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A small centrum ovale infarct (SCOI), caused by occlusion of the white matter medullary arteries, is often equated with a lacunar infarct. We sought to clarify the clinical characteristics of a SCOI visualized by diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) compared with those of a small basal ganglia infarct (SBGI). METHODS: Patients with a SCOI (SCOI group; n=38) or SBGI (SBGI group; n=68) < or =15 mm in diameter on conventional MRI and DWI were selected from 582 consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke. Sex, age, neurological symptoms, vascular risk factors, emboligenic hear

Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging of compromised tissue in stroke.

Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and T2 weighted magnetic resonance imaging were performed on at least two occasions in 28 children presenting with stroke. In previous reports of DWI in human stroke, eventual infarction was observed (with only one exception) in all regions in which early DWI hyperintensity occurred. In the present report, two children had regions of DWI hyperintensity which did not progress to infarction. One patient who presented with right hemiplegia showed extensive high signal on DWI, with T2 evidence of tissue swelling but without hyperintensity. DWI changes persisted ove

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in early central retinal artery occlusion.

INTRODUCTION: Restricted retinal diffusion (RDR) has recently been recognized as a frequent finding on standard diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). However, data on early DWI signal evolution are missing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive CRAO patients with DWI performed within 24 h after onset of visual impairment were included in a bicentric, retrospective cross-sectional study. Two blinded neuroradiologists assessed randomized DWI scans for the presence of retinal ischemia. RDR detection rates, false positive ratings, and interrater agreement were e

Measuring Strain in Diffusion-Weighted Data Using Tagged Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Accurate strain measurement in a deforming organ has been essential in motion analysis using medical images. In recent years, internal tissue's in vivo motion and strain computation has been mostly achieved through dynamic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. However, such data lack information on tissue's intrinsic fiber directions, preventing computed strain tensors from being projected onto a direction of interest. Although diffusion-weighted MR imaging excels at providing fiber tractography, it yields static images unmatched with dynamic MR data. This work reports an algorithm workflow that es
