The maximum attainable body size of herbivorous mammals: morphophysiological constraints on foregut, and adaptations of hindgut fermenters.

An oft-cited nutritional advantage of large body size is that larger animals have lower relative energy requirements and that, due to their increased gastrointestinal tract (GIT) capacity, they achieve longer ingesta passage rates, which allows them to use forage of lower quality. However, the fermentation of plant material cannot be optimized endlessly; there is a time when plant fibre is totally fermented, and another when energy losses due to methanogenic bacteria become punitive. Therefore, very large herbivores would need to evolve adaptations for a comparative acceleration of ingesta pas

The effects of increased dietary cellulose on the anatomy, physiology and behaviour of captive water voles, Arvicola terrestris (L.) (Rodentia: Microtinae).

1. Wild water voles and captives on high fibre diets had significantly longer and heavier digestive tracts (especially the caecum) than captives fed a low fibre diet. 2. Increasing dietary cellulose increased food intake, faecal output and metabolic rate, and decreased digestibility. Some but not all added cellulose was digested. 3. The passage of food through the digestive tract was significantly faster on the diet with added cellulose. 4. Coprophagy included eating directly from the anus and eating faecal pellets from the floor of the cage. The frequency of the latter type increased signific

Rate of food passage (transit time) as influenced by level of supplemental fat.

An experiment involving 35 White Leghorn hens was conducted to study the influence of graded levels of supplemental yellow grease on rate of food passage (transit time). Seven experimental diets (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30% supplemental fat) were formulated. Transit time was determined by utilizing either Cr2O3 or 144Ce as indicators. First appearance of the markers in the excreta and percentages of the markers ingested that were recovered in excreta 10 hr after feeding were criteria used to determine transit time. There was a significant (P less than .01) linear effect of fat on transit tim

Significance of abnormal gastrointestinal gas in systemic amyloidosis.

Nine cases of amyloidosis involving the gastrointestinal tract were reviewed for the presence of abnormal gastrointestinal gas by taking plain roentgenograms of the abdomen (PRA) as a diagnostic adjunct. Findings were compared to data obtained by conventional barium study or endoscopic examination. PRA revealed marked gaseous dilatation of the gastrointestinal tract simulating intestinal obstruction in three cases and a moderate or mild increase of gas in two cases each. Abnormality was thus found in seven of the nine cases by PRA. Conventional barium study by means of upper gastrointestinal s

Is the gut an athletic organ? Digestion, absorption and exercise.

Digestion is a process which takes place in resting conditions. Exercise is characterised by a shift in blood flow away from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract towards the active muscle and the lungs. Changes in nervous activity, in circulating hormones, peptides and metabolic end products lead to changes in GI motility, blood flow, absorption and secretion. In exhausting endurance events, 30 to 50% of participants may suffer from 1 or more GI symptoms, which have often been interpreted as being a result of maldigestion, malabsorption, changes in small intestinal transit, and improper food and fl

Increasing feed intake in domestic goats (Capra hircus): Measured effects on chewing intensity are probably driven by escape of few, large particles from the forestomach.

On the one hand, oral processing - mastication - is considered a relatively inflexible component of mammalian feed acquisition that constrains instantaneous intake rates. On the other hand, experimental data shows that the level of feed intake affects faecal particle size and hence net chewing efficiency in ruminants, with larger particles occurring in the faeces at higher intakes. Here, we report the effect of an increased feed intake during maintenance (L1), late (200% of L1) and peak lactation (300% of L1) of a consistent diet (hay:concentrates 50:50) in eight domestic goats on various meas

The spinal cord-gut-immune axis as a master regulator of health and neurological function after spinal cord injury.

Most spinal cord injury (SCI) research programs focus only on the injured spinal cord with the goal of restoring locomotor function by overcoming mechanisms of cell death or axon regeneration failure. Given the importance of the spinal cord as a locomotor control center and the public perception that paralysis is the defining feature of SCI, this "spinal-centric" focus is logical. Unfortunately, such a focus likely will not yield new discoveries that reverse other devastating consequences of SCI including cardiovascular and metabolic disease, bladder/bowel dysfunction and infection. The curren

Experimental evaluation of the potential for crayfish plague transmission through the digestive system of warm-blooded predators.

The crayfish plague pathogen (Aphanomyces astaci) can be transmitted through the digestive system of fish, but its dispersal through mammalian and bird digestive tracts has been considered unlikely, and direct experimental evidence remains scarce. We present a small-scale transmission experiment with European otter and American mink fed with infected crayfish, and experiments testing survival of cultures of five A. astaci strains at temperatures corresponding to those inside mammal and bird bodies. The pathogen was neither isolated from predator excrements nor transmitted to susceptible crayfi

Present in 85-90% of patients, pancreatic exocrine insufficiency contributes to growth retardation and delayed puberty in the child, and low weight in the adult. The incidence of hepatic disease varies according to whether one considers the discovery of histological abnormalities at autopsy of patients who have died from other complications (20-70%) or the presence of a focal or multilobular biliary cirrhosis complicated or not by portal hypertension (2-10%). Gastro-oesophageal reflux can contribute to the degradation of the nutritional state and exacerbate the respiratory symptomatology. All

Acute effects of capsaicin on gastrointestinal vagal afferents.

Capsaicin is an important tool for investigation of thin afferent fibres, but its acute effects on subtypes of vagal afferent endings are unknown. In the gastrointestinal tract, these subtypes are: muscle endings (thought to be purely tension sensitive), mucosal endings (sensitive to stroking and chemical stimuli) and endings in the oesophagus with both properties. Acute capsaicin sensitivity was investigated in ferrets using in vivo and in vitro methods. Single-fibre activity was recorded from 63 vagal afferents: 12 Adelta-fibres, 15 C-fibres and 36 unclassified fibres with endings in the oes

Prebiotics and probiotics: are they functional foods?

A probiotic is a viable microbial dietary supplement that beneficially affects the host through its effects in the intestinal tract. Probiotics are widely used to prepare fermented dairy products such as yogurt or freeze-dried cultures. In the future, they may also be found in fermented vegetables and meats. Several health-related effects associated with the intake of probiotics, including alleviation of lactose intolerance and immune enhancement, have been reported in human studies. Some evidence suggests a role for probiotics in reducing the risk of rotavirus-induced diarrhea and colon cance

The behavioral repertoire of the gastric mill in the crab, Cancer pagurus: an in situ endoscopic and electrophysiological examination.

Simultaneous endoscopic and electrophysiological recordings were used to observe the behavior of the gastric mill complex while recording the motor output of the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) in intact crabs. In the crab STG, many pattern-generating neurons are able to fire in several distinct rhythmic motor patterns. Specifically, many neurons can switch between firing in time with the rapid pyloric rhythm to firing in time with the slower gastric mill rhythm (Weimann et al., 1991). We now correlate behaviorally relevant movements of the gastric mill with some of the modifications of neuronal

Musings on the wanderer: what's new in our understanding of vago-vagal reflex? IV. Current concepts of vagal efferent projections to the gut.

Vagal efferents, consisting of distinct lower motor and preganglionic parasympathetic fibers, constitute the motor limb of vagally mediated reflexes. Arising from the nucleus ambiguus, vagal lower motor neurons (LMN) mediate reflexes involving striated muscles of the orad gut. LMNs provide cholinergic innervation to motor end plates that are inhibited by myenteric nitrergic neurons. Preganglionic neurons from the dorsal motor nucleus implement parasympathetic motor and secretory functions. Cholinergic preganglionic neurons form parallel inhibitory and excitatory vagal pathways to smooth muscle

Standardization of barostat procedures for testing smooth muscle tone and sensory thresholds in the gastrointestinal tract. The Working Team of Glaxo-Wellcome Research, UK.

An international working team of 13 investigators met on two occasions to develop guidelines for standardizing the procedures used to test gastrointestinal muscle tone and sensory thresholds using a barostat. General recommendations were: (1) Use a thin-walled plastic bag that is infinitely compliant until its capacity is reached. Maximum diameter of the bag should be much greater than the maximum diameter of the viscus. (2) The pump should be able to inflate the bag at up to 40 ml/sec. (3) Pressure should be monitored inside the bag, not in the pump or inflation line. (4) Subjects should be p

Influence of substance P on gastrointestinal myoelectrical activity in the conscious piglet.

In conscious piglets with electrodes implanted in the wall of the antrum pylori, the small intestine and the caecum, the influence of intravenous infusion of substance P (SP) (0.1 and 1 micrograms/kg/min for 2 hours) on gastrointestinal myoelectrical activity and arterial pressure was studied. SP was without significant influence on electrical activity of the antrum. However, intestinal myoelectrical activities were significantly stimulated. In the small intestine SP infusion resulted in an increase in frequency of migrating myoelectrical complexes and in irregular spiking activity, resulting

Modulation of electrical activity in gastrointestinal smooth muscle by peptides.

A rise in intracellular calcium is the predominant signal that leads to the activation of the contractile machinery in gastrointestinal smooth muscle. The primary sources of activating calcium are illustrated in Fig. 2. Voltage- and peptide-mediated release of intracellular calcium contribute to activation of some gastrointestinal smooth muscles. However, the primary source of activating calcium appears to be an influx of calcium across the plasma membrane. The degree of modulation of electrical activity by peptides varies depending upon the region of the gastrointestinal tract studied. Second

Introduction to an alternate view of acid/base balance: the strong ion difference or Stewart approach.

The carbonic acid/bicarbonate system, as defined by the Henderson-Hasselbach (H-H) equation, has traditionally formed the centrepiece of the presentation of acid/base physiology in nursing education. However, an alternative approach to describe acid/base physiology was proposed by Peter Stewart in 1983. Stewart determined, using the physiochemical principles of dissociation equilibrium, electroneutrality and conservation of mass, that hydrogen ion concentration [H+] was dependent upon the difference between the concentrations of strong cations and strong anions in a solution (the strong ion di

Influence of pinealectomy and pineal stalk deflection on circadian gastrointestinal tract melatonin rhythms in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata).

The authors examined levels of melatonin in the plasma and various tissues in intact, pinealectomized, and pineal stalk-deflected zebra finches kept under 12:12 LD to determine if the melatonin found in the gastrointestinal tract is secreted in a circadian manner. In intact and pineal stalk-deflected birds, there is a clear day-night rhythm in melatonin content of the plasma, pineal gland, eyes, proventriculus, crop, duodenum, jejunum/ileum, colon, heart, and liver. In contrast, pinealectomy abolished the day-night rhythm. These results indicate that most of the melatonin present in the gastro

Abdominal chemo- and mechanosensitivity in ruminants and its role in the control of food intake.

Ruminant animals have evolved a large and complex set of stomachs which allow fermentation of fibrous food by symbiotic micro-organisms. These stomachs are well innervated and generate signals which are thought to be important in the control of voluntary food intake. Tension receptors in the muscular wall of the rumen and reticulum are slowly adapting and provide a measure of distension while epithelial receptors are rapidly adapting and provide information on the fibrousness of the digesta; they are involved in the control of stomach motility and voluntary food intake in order to prevent exce
